The Honda VFR400 series of motorcycles were a related series of 399 cc V4-engined motorcycles, which were essentially scaled-down versions of the larger VFR race models of the day.(1) They were mainly developed for, and sold in, the Japanese domestic market, in part due to the tougher motorcycle drivers' license restrictions in Japan at the time for bike exceeding 400cc.

Outside Japan, the VFR400R (NC30) was officially imported to the United Kingdom for four years, but with a price tag of £5899(2) (similar to that of the 1000 cc bikes of the time and actually more than Honda's own VFR750F), failed to sell well. This model was also officially imported (in very limited numbers) and sold in Austria, France and Germany for a few years.

Although mainly produced for the Japanese domestic market, VFR400s have been popular as grey imports in other markets (especially so for the NC30 in the United Kingdom,(3) and also for racing purposes in the United States) in the 'mini' superbike segment. 1990 Honda VFR400R NC30

The first generation of VFR400 was the 1986–1987 NC21, which had replaced the VF400F when the Honda VF series was phased out (mainly due to reliability issues with the head and cam chain).

This model came in 4 designations, 'R', 'Z', 'K' and a police version with the 'P' designation. The 'R' model (VFR400R) being the most common. Between the designations multiple colour schemes were also available. The 'R' had a full fairing and single headlight. The 'Z' model was semi fared (side fairings and belly pan) and had 2 round headlights. The 'K' and 'P' both had a single round headlight and bar risers to give a more upright riding position.

All designations had a single piece seat for rider and pillion, 3 spoke cast wheels, an aluminum frame with steel rear subframe, and a conventional dual-sided aluminum swing arm with single shock. The clutch was hydraulically actuated and the front left fork featured Hondas TRAC (Torque Reactive Anti-dive Circuit) system with adjustable dampening on the right fork. This had 4 stage adjustment on the bottom of the fork. Both forks featured air assist. The engine was a 180° degree crank firing version, and had a rpm redline of 13000rpm on the 'R' and 'Z', the 'K' and 'P' had a redline of 14000rpm. A small number of NC21s (VFR400R) were imported new into New Zealand in 1987.

The 2nd generation of VFR400 was the VFR400R NC24, produced for the 1987 and 1988 model years, it was one of the first production Honda motorcycle to utilize an ELF-designed Pro-Arm single-sided swingarm (which later became one of the trademarks of the Honda VFR series). Discontinued with this model were the hydraulically actuated clutch which was switched back to a cable system, and while the TRAC anti dive system on the front left fork was retained, it was not adjustable. The cast wheels were updated to 8 spoke rear and 6 spoke front. Styling remained close to the NC21, with both having the same aluminium frame and with the NC24 keeping the VFR400R NC21's single large headlight and the exhaust silencer on the right side although the silencer was mounted higher up. The seat was changed to a separate seat for the rider and pillion each. This model also had the 180° deg crank firing engine as with the nc21, but redline was raised to 14000 rpm and the CDI dropped the cam position sensor input that the nc21 used. The NC24 was available in three colour schemes in 1987 (including an official Rothmans replica), and one in 1988. Note that the rear wheel on the NC24 was held onto the hub with 4 bolts (sometimes hidden with a plastic 'fake' single nut).

The third generation of VFR400R was the best known version, the VFR400R NC30. This saw styling changes, most notably the headlights were updated to smaller twin headlights, much the same as the RC30, and relocation of the silencer to the left side, which gave a more open look to the rear wheel on the right side. This model saw the introduction of the 360° crank firing engine, which is also known as the 'big bang' engine. The tachometer red-line was also raised to 14500 rpm. The NC30 was also officially sold in limited numbers in several European countries. The official European models were sometimes installed with a different CDI (ignition device), no 180 km/h (110 mph) restriction, speedometer that reached to 240 km/h (150 mph) and larger headlights (Germany). The NC30 was produced between 1989 and 1992, though unsold bikes were still available to purchase from Honda dealers for several years thereafter. The NC30 reflected the styling of its iconic bigger brother, the VFR750R (RC30), right down to its 18-inch rear wheel. Japanese-spec NC30s were available in a total of eight different colour schemes, produced with three different model year specifications (1989, 1990 and 1992). Export models were made in two different colour schemes, and carried model year designations L and M (1990 and 1991).

The official UK model has the following distinguishable features: slightly larger front and rear direction indicators; additional rear number plate light (separate from rear lamp) oil cooler, 60/55 watt headlamp bulbs, and a MPH speedo. The official UK bikes were only ever available in two colour schemes.

The Honda VFR400R NC30 is widely regarded as being a fine handling motorcycle. The engine has a very wide powerband for a 400cc engine, which made it a perfect beginners-superbike. It has a hardcore fanbase, especially in Japan and the UK, where the NC30 is a popular track-day and racing bike.

As the RC30 was eventually replaced by the RVF750R (RC45), the VFR400R NC30 evolved into the RVF400R NC35, which was produced between 1994 and 1996. This model featured inverted forks and an updated racing-style fairing.

Speed restriction(edit)

In the Japanese market, 400 cc motorcycles were once restricted by top speed, but these restrictions can be removed through various means, including the fitting of an ignition 'black box'. The VFR400R is restricted by means of an optical sensor inside the speedometer, and a black sector attached to the indicator needle shaft. When needle swings round to 180 km/h (110 mph) the sector starts to block the sensor, ignition is cut to the front two cylinders thereby reducing power such that the motorcycle can not accelerate further.

Some models also had power restrictions, this was most commonly a restriction washer in each of the rubber sections between the carbs and cylinder inlet.

Hello - I have a FB Radom VIS Mod 35 pat. Nr 15567 with a serial number of L0434. I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough idea of when it was made and educate me on this gun./ATTACH. The Vis 35, or Radom, proved itself one of the top 9mm service autos of World War II. One of the first orders of business was to get the military going again. Though many non-endemic arms were adopted by Polish forces out of necessity, arms design did continue apace, resulting in one of the best auto pistols of all time, the Vis 35 Radom. The Vis was generally regarded as one of the best military pistols of that period. Production started in the state armory Fabryka Broni in Radom in late 1935, and the following year it was introduced as the standard weapon of Polish infantry and cavalry officers. Matching serial numbers are stamped on the frame and on the slide.

Had the fortune to spy a war-time production VIS 35 in 9mm at a small pawn shop today. The owner allowed me to inspect internals for matching numbers, and then it came home with me. Largely considered as one of the best engineered pistols of the European WWII era, the VIS 35 was Poland's ultimate small arms achievement. Though it is uniquely patented, the pistol's design borrows heavily from the Belgian Browning Hi Power. Pre-war production (1936-1939) featured a prominent Polish Eagle on the left slide, and the guns were meticulously buffed and finished. When the Germans overran Poland in late 1939, they resumed production at the Radom Arsenal utilizing existing inventory. By mid to late 1940, they began making new product. The Polish Eagle was discontinued, and the Germans renamed the gun as the P35(p). Early occupation production had the new designation stamped on the slide, and the pistol retained its features such as the quality finish, the shoulder stock slot in the rear grip frame, and the takedown lever. Serial numbering was changed to the typical German alphabet prefix style. The Nazis assigned the Waffenamt inspection of WaA77 (later Eagle over 77). Final assembly and acceptance was assigned to the Steyr Arsenal in Austria, with Waffenamt WaA623. Magazines featured the inspection of E/189. As the war progressed, the Germans sought to speed production and cut costs. The stock slot was discontinued. The takedown lever was eliminated, and instead incorporated with the decocking device. The P35(p) was discontinued on the slide, the relief recesses were no longer milled behind the trigger on the frame, grip screw pillar escutcheons were eliminated, telescoping guide rod replaced with a solid rod, and the plastic grip panels were replaced with wood. Outward appearance was no longer a concern, and the polished finish yielded to the rough machined finish. The latest guns were parkerized instead of blued. For identification purposes of war-time pistols, some collectors will follow a system of Grades I-IV to denote the feature elimination progression. Others identify by the First Alphabet and Second Alphabet serial number series. And still others call them Slotted and Non-Slotted, or Three Lever and Two Lever. By mid to late 1944, the Soviets were advancing toward Poland, and the Germans began moving the entire VIS 35 production from the Radom Arsenal in Poland to the Steyr Arsenal in Austria. Can't really say that I absorb all the Grade Types and Sub-variants, so I'll call mine a two lever, d-prefix from the second alphabet, no stock slot, non P35(p) legend, E/77 slide and frame, WaA623 slide, telescoping guide rod, E/189 mag, and nice black plastic grips without screw pillars. It is an early 1944 gun and has some light high edge wear, a small rub on the right slide, a light scratch or two, and some moderate grip strap thinning. Bore is bright and sharp. Although the lighting and exposure don't always pick up proper hue in the pics, it's a very nice dark blue with 90-plus% coverage. Machining is crude and rough, just like it should be, and just the way I like it! My holster is extremely interesting. It began life as M1898 Austrian Rast Gasser revolver holster. It was likely modified in WWI to incorporate a shoulder harness. In WWII, the shoulder harness was eliminated, and the large trigger guard section was reduced to accept the smaller frame of the VIS 35. This is a very uncommonly found holster design, and I have only found reference to three others with similar alterations. The rest of the pics, and thanks for looking. -Matt

This 'Grade II' Polish Radom VIS 35 pistol was manufactured some time between 1939 and 1941. It is a self-loading, recoil operated, semi-automatic pistol that is chambered for the .9mm Parabellum cartridge. The pistol has been designed to operate as a single action firearm that utilizes an external hammer and a locked breech. The pistol has a blade front sight and a V notch rear sight that is drift adjustable for windage only. The pistol is fed by an 8 round single stack detachable box magazine. The pistol employs a push button magazine release that is located at the bottom rear corner of the left side of the trigger guard. An empty magazine will easily eject from the pistol under its own weight. The pistol features a decocking lever located at the rear of the slide and above the left grip. The pistol has a 4.53 inch barrel with 6 grooves using a right hand twist. The pistol has an overall length of 8.31 inches and an unloaded weight of 37 ounces. This firearm does employ a slide hold open mechanism to inform the operator that the last round has been fired. This pistol has a blackish finish and black checkered grip panels that sport the FB monogram molded into the left grip and the VIS monogram molded into the right grip panel. The blackish finish seen on this pistol is identical to the finish found on Russian captured weapons. Please see the text at the bottom of this page for more information.

The pistol has its beginnings at the Fabryka Broni(weapons factory) located at Radom, Poland. The pistol was designed in 1930 by Piotr Wilniewczyc and Jan Skrzypiński under the supervision of Kazimierz Rawicz Oldakowski. It did not take the Polish military long to realize the potential of this sidearm and in 1935 it was adopted as the standard handgun for the entire Polish Army. The VIS 35 is based on the design of Brownings M1911 pistol. The VIS 35 differs in that the barrel is not cammed by a link as seen on the M1911, but rather by a ledge which contacts part of the barrel and forces it down as it is moved rearward with the slide by the force of the recoil. This is very similar to the operation of the Hi-Power pistol which a number of collectors feel was an improved version of the M1911. Many collectors consider this pistol design to be one of the top handguns produced during the second world war and as such it is highly sought after by collectors.

Originally it was named WIS which is an acronym of the two Polish designers names, Piotr Wilniewczyc and Jan Skrzypinski. It was decided soon afterward though to change the name to Vis, which meant 'force' in Latin, with the wz. prefix designation standing for wzor(pattern or model).

When the Germans occupied Poland in 1939, they continued the manufacturer of the VIS 35 and between 312,000 and 380,000 were produced and then used by the German paratroopers and police. During this time, the Germans feared that the Polish technicians whom were being forced to manufacturer this pistol might supply the resistance with weapons. So the Germans moved production of barrels and the final assembly of the VIS 35 to the Steyr plant in Austria. Still, the underground supply of VIS 35 parts as well as completed weapons found their way to the Polish resistance and was used in conflicts such as the Warsaw Uprising.

German produced VIS pistols were issued in four different series or grades due to the attempts to simplify and speed up production. As the war progressed and started going badly for the Germans, they moved the complete production of the VIS 35 to the Steyr plant in Austria in late 1944. At this plant, the last simplified model of the fourth series was produced which had no inscriptions at all besides the bnz stamping. The Pistole 35(p) actually remained in production until a month before the European war ended in May of 1945. Generally and as we have seen with other arms produced by all sides during conflicts, the wartime pistols were of much lower quality than the prewar specimens.

The four different grades of the Polish Radom can generally be classified as seen below. I say generally due to the fact that some collectors do not consider grade 1 pistols starting with the first manufactured Radoms but rather with those pistols first produced by the Germans. While other collectors consider grades 3 and 4 as being the same. So there is a lot of interpretation written into the grading system and nothing is set in stone. I also did not include in this grading system the 'Resistance Radoms' that were assembled by the Polish resistance from parts that were stolen from the Radom factory. Nor did I include the custom built Radoms that were offered by Z.M. Lucznik. The letters 'Z.M.' indicate Zakłady Metalowe or Metal Works. Some collectors classify these pistols as the 'Reissue Radoms'. So generally, the four different grades of the Radom pistol is as follows..

Grade 1 = These pistols were produced before WWII between 1935 and 1939 and will not usually have any German markings. All parts will have a high quality of bluing except for the barrel, recoil spring and the recoil spring guide which are polished white. The grip panels are checkered hard rubber. The shoulder stock slot, lanyard ring, decocker and disassembly lever are present. On the left side of the slide it is stamped 'F.B. RADOM' and then the year of production underneath(1935-39), then the Polish national eagle stamp, and on the right of that it will be stamped 'VIS wz.35' and 'pat. Nr.15567'.

Grade 2 = These pistols were produced by the Germans between 1939 and 1941. The pistols were manufactured mostly from original pre-war parts and might retain some Polish markings on them. All parts will have a lessor quality of bluing then the Grade 1 examples but the finish and quality of the pistol is still very good. The barrel, recoil spring and the recoil spring guide are polished white. The grip panels can be a checkered black plastic, checkered brown plastic, fine or coarse checkered hardwood. The Lanyard ring, decocker and disassembly lever are present but the shoulder stock slot has been omitted on all but the very early examples. The slide markings have been changed to 'F.B. RADOM VIS Mod. 35 Pat. Nr.15567' and then underneath that is 'P.35(p)' The 'P.35(p)' stamp on the left side of the slide has been eliminated from the slide legend on late grade II pistols.

Grade 3 = These pistols were produced by the Germans between 1941 and 1943. The bluing on the parts of grade 3 pistols was done over a rough or a poorly polished surface. Early examples will have a blued finish while on others, the blued parts will be the rear sight, slide stop, magazine release catch, hammer, hammer release, and grip screws. The pistol frame, slide, and magazine will be parkerized. The barrel, recoil spring, and recoil spring guide are polished white. The lanyard ring is still present but the decocker, disassembly lever and shoulder stock slot has been omitted. The grip panels can be a checkered brown or red plastic, fine or coarse checkered hardwood, or a grooved hardwood on late production. The slide markings are 'F.B. RADOM VIS Mod. 35 Pat. Nr.15567'.

Grade 4 = These pistols were produced by the Germans between 1943 and 1945. By this time, the Russians were knocking on the door and production was moved to the Steyr plant in Austria. These pistols exhibit the worst quality of finish. The grips panels are usually a brown plastic or wood and be absent of the 'FB' and 'VIS' monograms. The lanyard ring is still present but the disassembly lever, decocker and shoulder stock slot has been omitted. These pistols are found with a crude one piece recoil spring guide instead of the telescopic one that was normally used, and the magazine follower is from the P-38 pistol. The slide markings on early examples will be 'F.B. RADOM VIS Mod. 35 Pat. Nr.15567' while late versions just have 'bnz'.

More of a one-man massacre than ever before (but just raggedy enough to keep things “real”), Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski invented for the character in the previous films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks maybe 100 words in the entire movie). Chinese wushu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock… Wick is fluent in them all.

But while Stahelski and his team have obviously put a great deal of thought into every frame of fisticuffs, “Parabellum” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Chapter 2” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building), “Chapter 3” is more out in the open. A sneaky little skirmish in Grand Central Station doesn’t live up to Stahelski’s creative potential, even if it’s amazing they pulled off the scene at all.

Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl?—?which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect—is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie.

Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 54-year-old star’s remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and the other poets of percussive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywood’s stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and widening them out.

To that end, it’s telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parabellum” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; like every other supporting character in this movie, there’s mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason.

There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “Game of Thrones” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like business type who’s a bit too greedy for his own good (it’s hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but he’s most definitely doing it). When the bullets fly, Sofia’s very good boys lend a valuable assist, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind of way; it does more than any of the tossed-off business with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the Continental Hotel owner (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica Huston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wick’s past, but her scenes are so immaculately shot that you’re willing to let it slide.

In a film that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th street’s United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater,” where people are trained to be killers in between performances of “Swan Lake.”

The film’s world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, whereas all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelski’s frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wick’s bounty with an old-fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and you’ll have the right idea). Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator who’s covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld that’s sustained by a mutual respect for all people so long as they don’t shoot the wrong target.

While this franchise is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for plenty of new life, so long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of just stretching it out. With the significant exception of “Mission: Impossible,” this is easily the best action franchise Hollywood has going these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with renewed focus.

The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 won’t matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement no longer seems like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Hollywood star or a $14 million bounty—fame can be a difficult thing to shake. It’s a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it.

In his role in the film 'The Life Aquatic,' which I haven't seen, Seu Jorge sang several David Bowie songs in Portuguese, accompanied only by his guitar. While this album doesn't include the identical recordings found on the movie's soundtrack, it does add more songs. At least that's what I have been able to piece together from descriptions and reviews online.

The idea of Seu Jorge singing David Bowie seems sort of unusual at first, and I guess it is unusual, but it's also very effective. Seu Jorge's voice is immediately recognizable, at least it is once you've heard it, and he sings very naturally, effortlessly, and with a sort of self-assurance that makes you think that these songs could have been written just for him.

Depending on the song, his voice ranges from his usual deep register to a higher one, not a falsetto but still pretty high for him. He does a great job with all the songs, but my favorites are the ones where he sticks to the lower end of his range. When his voice really shoots up into the stratosphere, it's a lot less mellow than what we're used to with Seu Jorge.
