Call me Thistle. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. This is my personal art blog. Shipyard stuff, travel paintings, sketches, personal art, works in progress, and the occasional finished piece. If you need to contact me and don't have a tumblr please email: my tumblr username at protonmail dot com

Know your insect antennae!
#great art op#this information is actually super useful for identifying insects#whenever someone asks me “what kind of beetle is this?” and I don't already know、 one of the first things I do is look at the antennae#there are SO MANY BEETLES ON THIS EARTH but one look at the antennae can narrow it down at least somewhat!#scarab beetles have lamellate antennae which are really distinctive and just knowing that much is incredibly useful

If you post genAI horseshit it’s an instant block.
#yup#don't make me look at something that you couldn't be bothered to make#don't make me read something that you couldn't be bothered to write#I will take that as the insult that it is

me and my homies support real artists who put their passion into their pieces instead of a machine who rips off the hard work of talented peeps
#yup!#I don't want to look at 'art' that you couldn't be bothered to make or read something you couldn't be bothered to write#If you think my time and attention are so worthless that I should spend them on something you couldn't spend time making#I will treat that as the personal insult that it is#And if you believe that it's okay to feed my artwork into a machine that I hate against my will and without my permission#you don't deserve to derive any enjoyment out of my art and I hope you never do

My last project for the season, probably! I painted this shield with a design to match the other shield, but I painted this one while it was attached to the ship!
#shipyard stuff#painting projects#It was pretty difficult to paint this while I was rocking back and forth but I did my best#also just as I painted the final paint stroke it started to rain lol

Got to take a close look at the carvings I worked on this season, back on the boat where they belong! Feels great!
#nautical stuff#painting projects#shipyard stuff#so satisfying to see the ship coming back together and to have had some small part in it

Today I painted this thing to match this other thing, but I don't know what to call either of them.

Bell gargoyle is all done! That's the last of my land-based painting projects this year, but I still have some other projects to do before the season is over.
#shipyard stuff#painting projects#I caused myself a lot of problems by accidentally touching his tongue with a rag while the paint was in the “sticky” stage of drying#and basically had to paint the whole thing twice

A couple nice crisp pelican photos from right before he left the building. I'm really pleased with how he came out!
#shipyard stuff#painting projects#Those feathers are still gonna pop even from a distance but also look nice closer up#which is exactly what I was going for
