Such a perfect sweet lizard girl! I adore her!

Since Miss Shadow seems to enjoy natural sunlight so much, I built her a sunbathing platform by my desk, so that she can hang out where I can see her, and get used to my presence in neutral situations, where I'm neither feeding/soaking/medicating her, nor actively watching, but rather working at my desk and mostly ignoring her.

Spent 3 hours last night constructing the platform and ramps from old boxes. Glad to see she approves.

Next, I'll be rebuilding her cardboard castle inside the cage. Got some ideas for how to set it up to maximize her floor space.

Still can't convince her to bask under the UV light in her cage, but she decided she loves the sunlight coming through the windows.

It's warm enough now that I can open the window and let in some unfiltered sunlight. This gives me time until fall to figure out what she dislikes about the cage light fixture.

my personal pick for most underrated animal is the european legless lizard, which i think is often taken to just look like a normal and rather plain snake, but if you're familiar with reptile anatomy at all it looks more like some sort of bizarre heraldic fantasy creature than basically anything else on earth

so the headline's a little misleading- Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna were the actual first captive breeding, they had a clutch in 2023. But this is the first North American facility and the second facility overall to hatch out crocodile tegus, which are an incredible species. They have laterally flattened tails and can swim just so fast, you have no idea. They're extremely rare in captivity, so the fact that there's even one facility breeding them, let alone two, is extremely cool and impressive.
