Week 1- introduction and initial thoughts
This lesson we where introduced to the different ways in which we could make a giff, each artist had a different thing that they emphasised in their work. This Made me think about the things I could emphasise in my work and this is something I should expand upon later. We then had a task of moving around the room and drawing a couple of objects being an apple orange and a candle with a cube on the table each time we moved around the circle we have to use a different medium in which to drew or paint the object this resulted in a 360 set of drawings of the object which we will turn into giffs next lesson.
This lessons homework is to choose a fairy tale that we would like to use in our three gifts the three gifts should tell the story of the chosen fairy tale the three gifts should also loop meaning that they should start where they stop. I already have an idea of what I want to do I'll consider a few of us I have considered Dracula as being one however there is this one Russian folktale that my mum read to me is a child and I've always loved the illustrations from that so perhaps the illustrative style of the guest something I should focus on.
Week 2- expansion on plan and story board
Over the week I decided to go with the Russian folklore which is called Yvonne the firebird and the grey wolf, I'm trying to stay on top of things so I've already researched into the plot however I am concern used as to whether giffs need to be accurate to the stories plot as the story has many different versions. This is something I will ask the teacher.
This lesson we have turns our 360 into a gift it is mostly successful however I had to play around a lot with the scaling has when I went round in the circle some of my pictures were a lot smaller then the others because I was sitting further away however this activity made me realise I could be a little bit more playful and experimental with the gifts I could produce through the different mediums we used this made me think I could perhaps play a texture and line work.
I switch to the teacher and she said that it doesn't have to be very accurate but it needs to be representative of the story so much so that Rita that knows the story would be able to tell what it was referring to or what story it was referring to.
I'll reach this conclusion the more I draw the ideas I have the gift, to do this I will alternate between different alternative storylines of the traditional story I want to there to more of a dark ending.
Week-3- finalised story board
Over the weekend I decided my plot line and how I should split three gifts up the first gift I need to make sure to address to the viewer slash audience that event is in competition with his other three brothers have I'm still insert and whether I should depict the father in this as well however I know that that there needs to be if and his two other brothers and the firebird with the golden apple. This acting Mr show Yvonne by the killing the firebird showing that he has gotten the golden that allow signifying that he's defeated the firebird with the grey wolf and maybe the Princess as well. The last gift needs to show with the grey wolf, and it needs to show that it is his two brothers that have killed him to do this I think the best way would B to show two weapons in which we used to KJV and have the two brothers in the first gift hold those weapons I'm thinking for now arrows and a sword would survice. In the original story that broke this do this to obtain the golden apple so they can inherent their fathers property and also marry the Princess.
To expand upon this I need to finalise my storyboard to this I'll try trial and error.
Week 4- starting the animation prosses
I'm still working on my storyboard so I'm behind and I'm struggling to make an image that will communicates a large part of the story today all continue 2 develop my storyboard I think it's best to do this before jumping in to animate it.
Week 5 – Ill
This week I've been dealing with my IBS so I have not been in have to put things on pause
Week 6- continuing animation process
I've gotten a rough sketch of what I want my gifts to look like starting to animate this lesson I'm starting with the firebird scene from my image development I have also decided that after looking at old illustrations from the book that along with the animation I will outline the animation and add text as well almost like the giff is a chapter within itself I will also possibly add a description underneath avoid happening to give a bit more back story to the viewer I've also taken colours from the colour palettes of these illustrations and tweak them a little bit so there are to to my liking slash simplistic.
Week 7- beginning maya character design
This week we were getting started with my character designs, you have presented a PowerPoint and delved into firstly what just should be full whether we'd like it to be for game or film or something else I decided on game as I felt like I could utilise body parts as functions a little bit more currently than a film.
I decided that I wanted my character to be some sort of underwater creature like a siren I came up with this idea from inspiration from a lot of illustrations that I'd been looking at at that period of time that depicted mermaids and sea creatures I made sure to curate a mood board so when developing my character I would have something to look back on for inspiration.
For now I'm playing around with the proportions of the body why think looks best and also thinking about what will be achievable on Maya.
Week 8- beginning character design
I have made my character turn around and also decided what textures and colours I want it to be I've decided to go with a more slimmer longer figu then the more rounded version that I had originally created, However I also recognise this version may be more difficult to make in Maya however I'd still like to try.
This lesson we imported character turn around into maya, and began the building blocks of our character.
Week 9- character modeling pt 1
This lesson we looked more in depth into how to model our character build upon what we already had, I have mainly the torso and the shape for the tail at this point and also the arms there are lots of curves in my character design I had realised which I will I'm not sure of how to achieve yet as it would take far too long to manipulate each vertex to get a curve well so I could use the pen tool it's not always certain that it will bend the way I wanted to even in the right direction.
Week 10- character modeling pt 2
For this lesson I had to redo a lot of my body, As I lost it wasn't symmetrical this I know would cause problems later down the line, we got some help from the teach They told me to use off selection when one team to manipulate a large amount of vertex is at once by doing this I was able to make another tail with a nice curvature. I also began on hands to do this I looked up lots of videos, I'm currently attempting those now.
I have made a hand however there are lots of that may cause disruption later down the road for instance there are too many lines that cross over each other, so will most likely need to ask help on this for next lesson.
Week 11- character rigging
This lesson I managed to make another hand and also arms that had a nice curvature in them to do this I made yeah curve with the wave tool, now I'm just continuing to smooth things out and add detail to make sure that it is accurate to my character I recognise that I'm quite behind this because I've been ill most days this term, I also struggle with my software quite a bit.
This lesson we also learned about character rigging just something I'm not able to do yet as I am not far along just something that I will look back on later down the line Rigging is process of creating a digital skeleton so it can be animated hopefully I should be able to get onto this.
I have discussed with the teacher and I think it best to leave out the hair for this character I will instead emphasised coral who owns and make her look very alien like I'm leaving out the hat is there isn't a proper way to make it in Maya that would be incredibly time consuming I also struggle with the software so I'd rather go for a simple option I'm also thinking about colours and textures and I will most likely create my own and use perl textures mainly
Week 12- lighting and rendering
This lesson we learn about lighting and rendering something I've done before,
So just the renders we can also use Photoshop we also need to make a mpeg 4 video of our character as posed and turned around, I had to leave class early, as the Benton end project got in the way with the submission deadline and Ben and amber suddenly letting us know that they weren't in Cambridge on this day there for me and min had take the brunt of this.
Extension period.
in this. I had an extension so I went back into my giffs that I was behind on, continued with the first gift of the firebird and simply continued the animation for the animation of the bird I had to continuously look at video references of but but flying and how their wings moved in relation to the body for instance when the wings locked down the body move slowly up. I also decided to use my procreate background for this previously in week 6 I'd spoken to my teacher and we had an idea of making the bird fly through the forest to do this I'd have to start and stop with the same tree however this was in a 2D Skype of trees this was a one point viewpoint it was almost like a tunnel in which the bird would be flying down I was going to attempt this and I did start to however it was something that I think was finding extremely difficult but I also recognise it could take up more time than necessary and it don't think it was necessary for he story that the gift was trying to convey so I made it so that the bird will be flapping its wings in midair staying still also three brothers in the background view this because the trees weren't moving the brothers where not moving.
For the second gift I also pulled reference is from a lot of videos of wolves running, managed to get down some templates 6 frames of the different stages of the wolfs run what position are in by copying a video and then we have these templates from procreate into TV paint which I then traced. upon reflection I would have liked to animate event in the Princess more thoroughly one on top of the roof however I didn't have time to do this so I simply had to move them up and down as the wolf ran. 'cause I wanted the first friend to be consistent with the 2nd frame and let the viewers know that they were still in the same or similar vicinity in the story I made sure to draw these same trees again the wolf past. for this task I recognise that gifts are much like illustrations so the story itself can't necessarily be told through what happens in an animation but the illustration itself should to some degree tell the story for instance when a van is running on the grey wolves back is also holding I sword with a golden apple on with blood all over to suggest the killing of the firebird I will also mention this in the text above and below.
the third gift was the most strenuous one to create despite being released about movement this is because I decided on it being a water scene that I wanted to create lots of layers of shimmering water that would emphasise movement it would also be more accurate to have in moving body in moving water as opposed to a moving body died animated in the still water.
I have now added the backgrounds to the giff which I feel really pull the pice together.
As for my maya character. Have successfully completed it, to combat the issue of her not having any hair, I decided to add more coral reefs to her head and body so she still fit the theme of being a siren, I even felt that she looked better with her coral head pice as it makes her look more otherworldly and part of a video game as I intended.
I have made a turn table however may keeps crashing every time I try to export it so I have made a video recording of it instead. For the colour scheme of the character I decided to keep it relatively close to my designs, I added a perl texture that I got of of the internet then red for some other parts of the body which really made a nice contrast, then for the coral pices I decided to make them slightly transparent, white and also glow slightly.
The main problem I faced was after making the diffrernt body parts separately they didn’t always match up for instance the writs to hand wherent the same in width or length at all the end of the art was to thin for the hand so when I placed the hand on the wrist the hand would look out of place, to combat this I cut part of the wrist off by delegating the faces and then matched the hand up, combined it and then mirrored it.

Year 2 term 2 blog
Animation practice.
Week 1- this week we ventured out to the fitzwilliam museum, there we chose a portrait, we had to chose this portrait based of something that initially captured us. For me I was captured by the glowing white dress of the woman, I was intrigues by its elements of mystery and uncanny. The painting defies a woman in a almost floresant white dress stood next to her simular white donkey where she is interacting with a lion. The lion is looking up to the woman in ore. From here I wanted to explore the possibilities of the paintings circumstance, what world are they based in ? How does it work? Who is she ? And what is her character? These are all things I explored when crating observational illustrations of the painting on that day.
- For homework we are to expand on these points
- Reaserch into the paintings context
- Create different outcomes with mifferent mediums
Week 2- I was a bit ill this week so couldn’t get done as much as I would have liked. But I was able to expand on points and then further expand ideas after reaserching into the context of my piece. I have created a reasech word document and a final summary of my story, which may or may not change the further I experiment with image.
I created a few tonal pieces based of the pice and a colour scheme however I may need to go back into experimenting with the original peace more later.
Week 3- this week we studied concept art and story boarding. This week I will be creating observational drawings to help me with my background art.
Also creating any designes that I have come up with through my research.
I will also primarily be working in watercolour, but also digitally for background compositions so I can move things around. – this is something I will have to further experiment upon.
In jeffs breaf we more in depth looked at the different methods within backround art to support the sequential flow of the story, for instance I could blurr the background and keep the main focus on the foreground then change the focus from the foreground to the background if there is something significant that is going on in the background.
Whilst thinking about this I am also trying to further finalise My storyboard which is a matter of trial and error have I keep on going back to the written text that I wrote on my stories context in relation to The original painting that I chose so it stays cohesive.
Week 4 –
This week eek I we continued to look at concept art Well I am also again furthering fin aliasing my storyboard which I'm close to finalising it is only by doing the storyboard first that I'm able to think about the concept art and the backgrounds that I will be using. I've decided I've been colouring my storyboards to get a good idea of what my colour scheme would be I did this by referring to some of the colours that I extracted from the original peace that I was examining whilst also incorporating colours of my own that I felt were appropriate or fit the intended atmosphere of my story. In the original peace the fairy queen is an off white against her dark backgrounds and other colours she appears almost glowing this is something I've incorporated into my character design who is my own interpretation of a mysterious woman living in the woods similar to the fairy queenie depicted in the story and the painting. For now she's the only thing that I want to be glowing white this may change.
In my spare time this week I have also created lots of textures that I have derived from tree bark Leaves, and my own hair. I wanted to create textures from real life natural objects 2 first experiment but also I felt like I would create the most natural looking outcomes the people would recognise where from nature for example I had gotten some flowers put some ink on them and printed them for the bark rubbings they mainly came out speckled which is something I could use as a textured background perhaps over my painted backgrounds to create a nice dimension.
I then created furr textures out of my hair which I had made into a brush using ink and acrylic paint.
Week 5
In this lesson I finalised my anomatic from my storyboards the main struggle that I faced and it was not knowing whether the animations would look too short or long within the given time frame that they are shown on screen this is something I will have to perhaps change when creating the animation.
On week 3 I had created a book of fur experimenting the different ways in which fur could be drawn, I wanted to expand on this, Bunny had suggested in a previous week that I curate a fur texture out of fur itself. However I didn't have any actual fur but I did have my hair which I had cuts the previous week I then use this hair to create brushes and used in can acrylic and experimented with the different textures slash for textures I could make. And then use these textures to make a brush in procreate which is a matter of trial and error. I then incorporated this fur texture in one of my more detailed story board frames, the outcome was good and I had tried out a few of the furr textures. However the main problem was was that I wasn’t shore of how to export these brushes. This is something that I will get back to you on.
For this weekend I will attempt to draw out my backgrounds in detail and plan them.
Week 6-
I was ill for this weeks lesson however I was able to go in later in the week to try and sort out my furr textures. I found out that you couldn't fully export a brush onto another software like TV paint however I was able to export parts of the brush and the texture and the shape I then tried to make a new brush in TV paint however this was not successful and it didn't create the same effect.
Although there are other textures in TV pane this is something I will have to resolve later down the road another possible thing that I could very well do is import these textures into after effects and move them in that.
I've also started painting my backgrounds this is something that will probably take a long time I'm using a watercolour that is a little similar to gouache, but this is still going well thus. I'm aware that we're starting a new project for the next six weeks this is something I have to try and incorporate into my spare time.
Week 7- this week we were given a brief on the Benton end live projects in which end to end facetimed us and said what we would be doing essentially for the next six weeks. I'm with men we were split into groups and the Alex and Ben and we're doing propagation we all need to go away individually and come up with concept art storyboard and synopsis for the brief within the next few days I have made some mood boards of what I wanted to look like I've also research and propagation we were able to ask bent and some very specific questions I asked about to what degree do we want it to be more of a tutorial slash a trailer how accurate you they want it to be and I think it's the consensus was that it was a trailer and I didn't have to go too far into specifics because of this I want to really delve into the atmosphere.
I have started making the character design and during flower references of the iris is I don't want to make it look too cartoony but I also need to have that simplicity there I'm taking lots of inspiration from the author of JoJo rabbit.
I have just finished most of my concept art and my storyboard I have incorporated slight texture here and there to keep that gritty and real nras for my storyboard it was a matter of trial and error and trying to fit it into the 42nd time frame however I think I've succeeded in curating a cohesive synopsis.
Week 8- This week I had found out that my pitch was the one that made it through therefore rendering me director of the group. We had a good group discussion on how we would manage our time and split the workload up we felt it best to all have different frames to animate Ben put themselves forward to do the sound an amber to do the colouring, we then decided that we needed some sort of router for planning when to get things done so then we would be on schedule and to make sure to keep each other updated if you weren't able to provide this. for me I've been set the task of doing a full character turn around as in my concept art there is only a drawing of her of what she looked like from the front I am also to colour this and give a full colour palette the whole animation.
the main problem that we're facing this week is that Benton and have requested that we use a different plant as the Irish that I have shown in my storyboard isn't typically doused in water for a period of time before putting into soil when propagating therefore I will also have to come up with a new range of flowers for next week. as I want to keep up and make sure I don't fall behind I'm also setting myself the task of roughly drawing out the frames of m 2 animations from the 2 frames I have picked.
I'm doing the animation process at the moment I've decided to just stick to 1 I was going to do the flower background however I realised this will be hard to do when I don't know exactly what flowers I want to depict in it as Benton has requested specific flowers and Bunny has emailed them to request these specific flowers so I'm going to stick with my first animation which is the girl snipping the flower.
all this animation are imported my storyboard scenes to make sure the were accurate to storyboard style, after this we got together as a group to curate the anomatic so we are able to time our animations properly and keep them on time.
as a whole working as a group is more efficient but I found it difficult at times to make sure everybody is saying exactly what they think and should go ahead it feels a bit like at the moment and a few people are putting themselves forward but hopefully this will get built upon as time goes on.
Week 9-
Over the weekend I managed to complete my character turn around however only coloured one of images felt only necessary to colour one as she looks the same boy around colour wise, we also heard back from Benton and saying the we should stick to our original storyboard plan with the flowers so there weren't any specific flowers that they wanted us to use and at the end of the day the short trailer is a trailer and not a accurate scientific depiction of what flowers can and can't be used.
I was also able to make the colour palette which i sent to the group chat and min had modified The colour palette slightly to different versions, this helped as it produce more of a variety to pick from.
Alex also got back to us and some of the background art they kept it grainy like I requested and they are making a move on the rest of their scenes that they will be animating Ben is also doing their thing with the filing and the sound which I'm feeding into I've sent them a link 2 music that I visualise being in the scene things like sound effects will crop up I'm sure as the animation process proceeds.
As for my animation process I'm still blocking out the main animation of the girl sniffing the flower as I went home to see my grandpa for the weekend so I wasn't able to do the animation over the weekend. for now I'm doing the main body and next week i'll get onto the inbetweens.
Week 10-
Over the week I managed to block out the animation and make a start on the in between's however is taking longer than expected as there are lots of components within the animation that are some of the back and forth 2 frames seemed the background need to be more spread out as before they were on ones and this flickering looks too intense an almost dramatic however now that I'm trying it on 6 frames each it looks a lot more smooth and light which is the atmosphere I'm trying to create the animation for the foreground with the iris is is also slightly slower with the more of an emphasis on the wind blowing I've also added slights jittering to the sun's movements I've put these on force so they're slightly faster than the background however not too slow to emulate that flickering light of the sun.
amber has also gotten back to me with the colouring my scene the colour looks really good All in all however I need to make some tweaks to it as the colour of the plant sometimes overlaps with the hand where it's not supposed to therefore I need to go into each frame and make sure I clean this up.
so TV pen has deleted my animation that I've done for my colouring again as I wasn't that on it with saving it gives me another opportunity to make it better I've also added this time texture to the face for blush I have done this because when Benton end came to review our works they said they wanted reaction Of my character to her plants wilting to be more severe and distressed way in which we could do this is through sound effects or they suggested a tier however I feel like these options maybe slightly too dramatic or corny so I'm opting to put more sweat on her face and intense her blush suggesting her intense embarrassment or shame.
Week 11-
This week I managed to fully finish the background but the final scene so I have sent tho is off to amber. I've also made some more touch chips too the previous scene that I was animating and I and also adding another animation which is a transition seeing that me and men have agreed that we should keep in and this is a transition between both of our scenes.
to effectively do this men drew the stem they had left off it in the animation for this transition I wanted the camera to move up to the flower and then be met with the final flower bed scene that I had previously animated.
to create this quick movement of moving up the stem I almost made this stamp flow a little bit with strike marks To make it seem although it was moving up the stem at a rapid pace. I then used a copy version of the foreground of the iris is and slowly integrated them onto the stem slowly zooming out in which the flower bed then also appeared.
I was also able to get this done finally this lesson and sent it off to amber so then shoot belt fully colour it before you put the animation together and send it off next week.
a problem I did face this week that I hadn't realised was I forgot to incorporate the Bee into both of my scenes to make this process quicker I did steal one of Alex is animations of their B and put it in the final scene however I animated my own B and then put it in my first scene animated I also have to colour I have learned from this that there needs to cohesive communication within a group and to explain the obvious as a lot of the time a simple bee was getting missed out or at the background of an animation was getting missed out, for other things like animation textures that could really elevate the animation when applied for instance with my background in my first scene I did I animated a small background scene with a little bit of movement here and there I also added the blush the shadows and to the hand movements and the face generate more depth and realness to the character and the scene. if we had stayed on time I would have also been able to do this to the final scene I had animated.
Extension
In this extension period I been animating my 40 second animation, The wave cycle in the first scene with different layers of fabric that would be flying past her face to do this I did each of the wave cycles on a different layer and then looped them. they face quite a few problems doing this mainly in that looping them became difficult as it was hard did not make it look like few wave was snapping back into its previous start position I have to really think about but the way cycle was and how it worked. I also notice that if I'd just used the previous animation frame and moved it up the waves looked really blocky so I did have to we'd rule the waves each time I moved the previous wave up a little bit more to show the waves were in fact moving along which created more movement.
Also the biggest struggle of this was the amount of time it took it took me more than 7 hours to do these wave cycles and another 5 to do the ones that opened up to the face brush along the face after I done this stupidly I just realised I couldn't reanimate the colour alongside this, so I asked for my teachers advice on this of course e-mail.
past couple of weeks I've also been working my backgrounds which I have imported into TV paint to use as a guide for where my character should be.
I struggled at first when it came to the walk cycle of her walking down I recognise that it looks quite jaggedy however also realised the camera position picked her quite far away, so almost emphasises this difference I also decided to only animated hair and white in The Walking scenes or depicting her from far away as I wanted to translate and highlight the idea of being a glowing light just the fairy queenie painting depicted the queen as Pierre and white.
This week I've been finishing up for my 42nd animation I had in the end decided not to try and add colour to each of the wave cycles although I did attempt to with one but only got about 3 seconds in and decided it would be too much to do another nine times when I say 3 seconds in I mean 3 seconds worth of animation in so I opted for a fur texture the which I created on procreate using my fur pen I had created this then occurred to me this would make more sense in my development to use this pen and depict this texture I was going to use this as well however I also think that maybe having colour and texture would overcrowd the piece and I think it looks good with the texture I also added the textured background black 2 this animation as to replicate the texture of my storyboard that I have painted of this.
I also had to go back into the blood scene with the tear coming down from the wolves eye, This is because firstly it was out of sync with the eye that moved up when the camera move down also I felt like it didn't move enough like a teardrop so I researched videos of water running down windows trend emulate what this would actually look like I also looked at videos of water spilling on the bounce back in waves I could see within this movement.
I also created sound myself as I spoke with Bernie about this I really want to to emphasise first sounds and I knew this would be a large portion of my animation I also added in nature sounds of crackeling through leaves that I thought would emulate a nice ominous aura as I do want that to be a slight ominous or from this film I think this pairs well with the beautiful backgrounds I've created there is this junk position between ominous and romanticising this previous that we can see within this character and the almost evil deeds that she is committing by collecting animal fur.
the main things that I'd struggle with were mainly animations failing on me in terms of the TV paint programme or syncing up each of the layers on TV playing frame by frame so they all added up and nothing was out of time or sync this took a few trailers tribulations along the way sometimes I accidentally move the frame and then the different layers would become out of sync with each other so having to go back in and correct this or something I was very aware bad kept happening so I made should be extra careful when Animating to pay attention to all the layers which I had been doing but sometimes you don't realise that certain frames or les are supposed to be synced.
another thing is that I had added a lot of layering and opaque layers so I had to be aware of what couldn't couldn't be seen through these opaque layers so adding a white underneath bit helped I also struggled with colouring a little bit as it just took a lot longer than expected to combat this and a few of the other later scenes I started animating colour first and then drawing around the colour which I felt spread it process and actually looked a little bit better or add colour and at the same time which is a technique I'll be using in the future.
I'm still editing on premiere and update you on that process.
I HAVE COMPLETED THE FINAL ANIMATION !!!! The main problems that I faced where software problems as per usual. I also found it difficult to make the transitions alight with each other for instance the trees on the foreground that where on a separate layer had to move across at the same pace as the background the is then had to match up with the animation, so there are parts of it that could have been more well transitioned and paced I think but alas it is the deadline so have to hand everything in.

Week 1
CGI
Week 1
This lesson we watched some graphic animation trailers, mostly at Saul bass. We had a selection of books to look at and I chose lord of the flies because ei likes the themes of
So I am currently key framing this scene. I am keeping in mind that I want to incorporate follow through and a minute level of squash and stretch as I want the characters to move more realistically than exadurated.
human nature and savagery and felt that I would visually be able to symbolise this. I also liked the themes of boyhood, which implies a level of innocence and nievety.
For my home work I will be reaserching into lord of the flies
Week 2
At home I reaserched into lord of the flies and specifically its symbols such as barbarism and civilisation, loss of innocence, the nature of evil, human nature nd free will, I tried making some sporadic images of things that it brought to mind, as well as different movements. So I filmed different movements some quick and hars and some softer, from what I have gathered from the story us far there are some juxtapositions and dramatic changes in the story, this could be shown through passing or harsh sharp imagery.
For this lesson we had an introduction guide into after effects where we where given some royalty free videos to help us along the way as well.
This lesson we looked into working with the puppet tool, where we manipulated text, I figured this would also be handy when working the limbs.
I found the puppet tool generally easy and didn’t experience many problems with it
At home I continues on my research as I felt like I still had quite a vague idea of the story
Week3
This week we looked into motion in motion graphics, I found his particularly interesting as movement is something that can be applied to all parts of the animation including the text, image and even sound
For instance sound can match the movement to create a specific atmosphere that the animator is trying to convey.
More specifically we looked into different movements and what the conveyed / symbolised, for instance linker movement represents progression, circular movements represent perhaps recurring happenings in the story line. I gathered from this that since are task is making a trailer we have to hint and forebode rather than blatantly show the reader what is going to happen, knowing that my strengths lie in illustration bovever I know that this is something that I want to enhance on to fordhadow / forebode.
This weekend I will be mainly working on my concept art.
Week 4
This weekend worked on my imagery that I drew from the story like and started to compose snapshots of what my story board and what some of the movements / what images I was gonna use from my concept designs . After doing reaserch into the story I desided that the conch shell was a symbol used throughout the story as a motif of the imbalance of power, for instance one had to hold the conch shell to speak, this rule later became ignored as the boys started resulting to barberry and desided nort to speak and do whatever they wanted.
This week we looked at types of cuts in film such as the standard hard cut, or cut o n action, after my lesson I looked over these and thought what would be useful in my animatic. I felt that a smash cut could be used effectively ( transitioning between two contrasting shots) for dramatic effect.
I want the start of my animatic to be smooth and gentle, then gradually speed up and turn into chaos just as the story does
Now I have do my story board, as stoary boards go it usually takes me 3 to 4 ruff attempts and samples to come to the right one.
Week 5
Over the weekend I make my story board whitch I moved around a lot as seen on my slides and began making my animations and images for after effects and will try and get this all done in the next few days. For this I will be mainly working on proctreate as it is more efficient and less time consuming.
For my concept art I did a lot of it will watcher colour and ink as seen on my slides, I want to curate this same gritty texture through textures that I have made and the use of new pens I have brought on procriate to immatate brush strokes and printing. I am running behind so I need to use my time wisely so I can get onto my animatic as soon as possible.
Week 6- ill and not in
Unfortunately I am ill so will have to attempt the animatic at a later date.
Week 7
This week we began with maya, I found it difficult to get back into since it has been nearly a year since I have used the software but throughout the lesson I found myself picking stuff back up. We followed a tutorial of curating an ikea dining room step by stem, I focused on the tools and what they did for future reference. Found the mesh tool hard to use at first but after using a few times I got the hang of it. And was able to produce the room in that lesson.
Week 8 – not in as I was in A and E- allergic reaction to some hair dye.
Week 9
This week since I wasn’t here for the last lesson because I was in a and e I had to catch up on last lessons work. Witch was making glasses, with a combination of watching videos and help from the teacher I was able to do this. I find with maya often you should mirror sides to they are the same in size and length so when using a mesh tools it wont go wonky.
Week 10
This week I began my room for my character, I planed last lesson the lay out of the room, and how I added a few separate elements to the room such as a bunny and more sewing stuff to the room to reflect my character and her environment, the bunny being for her son, and the sewing kit for her and her son ( she fixes things showing her stoic character) I managed to get help when making the layout of the room, to combat this I watch the YouTube videos on maya to help guide me.
Week 11
This week I managed to retreated work on maya I thought I had lost.i then began on making my set of draws for my character, when I ried to add a mesh tool to something that was unequally beveled it didn’t work. To combat this I first added the mesh tool and then beveled.
I watch some videos and used how to make a bowl as reference for my candle holder, to complicate this all I need to do is make a handle, add the candle.
From here I will make the bed bunny and sewing kit, for this I will need to learn how to make fabric. Then I will and colour and texture to everything and have the candle be the main worse of light.
Week 12
This week I am continuing to make my assets I have already make my candle and cupboard along with a mirror.
I am now trying to curate a needle and tread, I first was tying to make the tread however I wasn’t able to snap my face to my vertex curve, so for now I had the idea that I would make a basket full of needles and threads. The threads being thread wheels that I have already make, all I need to do now is make the basket and duplicate.
Week 13
This is my last week, I have had a few attempts at my after effects but I properly started it yesterday, however I am going to have to do my after effects again today as some of the files got delegated and files got moved to different comps so it was all mixed around.
Although I have been set back by a day reducing my animatic did means I was able to root out some problems. For instance I was trying to use a puppet tool on a lined object which as difficult as it only moved sorta in lined to combat this on procreate I was able to use an extreamply opaque paint brush and then turn down the opacity this way when transporting in into after effects it was still stranparent so I could see the textured background, but still use the puppet tool on it as a solid object ( the object was an arm and a hand holding the conch shell)
The puppet tool came in very handy in bless I was able to manipulate still images to add a slight bit oof movement here and there.
This week although I havent got as many assets as I would like to be done I have attempted to try and texture them all.
I ran into some real problems when texturing as some of the objects just weren’t letting me apply the texture, I tried to search this up however I couldn’t find anything on it.
There is a possibility that I wil not get this room done in time for the deadline, I will attempt what I can and make other things in the project better to avoid a massive dip in my grade.

Animation practice
Week 1———This week we started with character design, we played and experimented around with shapes and how they could change how a character came across. I felt that my characters worked best with a triangular/ rectangular format ( characters usually rigid and long and slender) this meant I found it difficult to draw my character with circular shapes, I found it was hard to make him look mature or sleek, but made him look far more child like and innocent. The cubed version of my character came across as Saturn and cross. These are all things I will deep in mind when designing characters in the future.
Oserational drawing was at first a challenge to get back into but after a while u become fit at drawing and looking a t the same time. I was looking for people who I felt looked regale or stoic as my prompts where belle epuque and stoic, I also got thin however I thought that would reduce the amount of people I could draw.
Week2—— we started with an exercise of how to turn our observational drawings into characters, this thought me to pay attention to specific forms such as noses or hands and wither to exadurate or distort them and also to embassies a part of the body to infancies the overall form and shillouette.
The most promintant parts of my reasech of belle epiqua where into the housing (lower class in the attic, and the upper class occupied the rest of the housing) talouse latrec and the politics of that time period. I felt that the housing is something that I can use to create tension and drama in the plot line. Whilst also reinforcing the theme of class divide. The more I draw my character the more I will get a feel for her personality and the story.
I have gone back and forth between character designs, I have desided to go back and to one of my earlier designs as I feel she helped med more character, however there are still things that I would like to improve upon. For instance I want her to look younger to add a element of child like mystery and fanatics to the story. (older sibling being the provider for her younger ones, and they are all hid away in the attic)
For now, I will continue to draw her doing different things to get more of. Feel for her character, ie her interacting with siblings (as a provider, as I need to deep her stoic character relevant to her), t her doing chores, hiding from upper class in the house, her trying on upper class clothes es and so on
Week 3 – I was not here to attend the lesson never the less I attempted the task of developing my character , by drawing her in different poses with her younger siblings.
For this I tried to focus on character traits they may have related to stoicism and also things that might have happened during this period of time of the Belle epoc That might have affected them when researching into this I found a lot of housing crises during this period of time and poverty this was due to the amount of surplus wealth that the bourgeoisie was holding at the time partly due to the industrial revolution. This research can be seen on my slides. When developing my work I also find it important to talk to other people about it and what their impressions might be.
Week 4
This lesson will made to consider layout for this we were asked to create a mood board from this period of time which I had already began to do I especially liked the layout of the house what different classes would live on different levels the upper class taking the majority of the house and the servants or peasants living in the attics or the basements I felt like this house was already kind of laid out like a comic book this might be an interesting place to explore. I've also been developing my character through different poses, and illustrating dynamics they have with their younger siblings. I've decided I want her to be an almost parental figure despite being so young the pivotal point the story has something to do with the effects of the Prussian war, perhaps a family death causing them to move away from a more rural area to an urban one if not this there were lots of housing crisis during this period of time where people were often displaced from their homes and replaced by lavish gardens for the elite or upper class.
Later on this week I spoke to my dad about the story which gave me a few ideas I was finding it hard to make my character younger and I often got that she looked more like a mother, we began talking about children born out of wedlock in this period of time and this led me to the decision that she would be the mother of this boy and she would have had him out of low headlock this was ostracised and forced to move out of her home from her Christian household as she refused to give her baby up to a baby farm which was something that was commonly used in that period of time.
As I continued to finalise the storyline I decided that she would be living up in an attic in one of the houses Of the bourgeoisie with her son with whom she has to take care of bringing in her stoic character not only through the fact that user provider and has to be tough and resilient woman during this time But is also stoic in the way that she decided to keep her son even though she knew it would lead her to be ostracised by her family and society. Since I I'm only doing full pages I won't delve into the back story of how she got pregnant or who she got pregnant with this is something I can maybe pick up as a later date to learn how to fully develop stories more.
Now sketching up draughts for my final 4 pages.
Week 5
Have sketched up a few draughts of my final 4 pages however another field that finalised over decided I want to incorporate the fact that she has had her son out of wedlock through a traumatic flashback of person's birth I've created a colour palette out of my use of watercolour when developing these pages and have transferred them into procreate where I've created individual pallets which I will either create digitally or on paper however since digital is more efficient and quick it is more likely that I will go down this route. I'm currently trying to decide where to put the flashback pages in the four pages ideally I'd like to keep the flashback pages to two however I'm not sure if I should begin with the flashback and with the flashback will keep the flashback in the middle this obviously will also affect the layout of my comic so I will SketchUp a few ideas that I have and choose which best suits the flow of the story and come to a final conclusion.
I found that keeping the flash back in the middle was the best option as previously I had sketched up a few interactions she would have with her son or siblings at in that period of time and her sewing I like the idea of her pricking her thumb and bleeding and this triggering a flashback of the birth by doing this I will be able to use red as a colour of danger.
Four the final 2 pages I have sketched them out in watercolour in small pieces so I'm able to see the layout through tone and colour better than just sketches as means of and talked about this lesson we think we need to keep in the idea of the house I was previously going to cut out as I didn't think we had enough pages have I like to keep this in and have decided that I will put the house on the last page to show the character coming back to present day the house will depict the upper class family on the bottom floor and then in the attic visually depicting the class divide.
I have now made some final small draughts of what my pages will look like now I am going to begin illustrating this and colouring it on procreate of as I have decided this will be the faster way of doing it I've also purchased a new pens and procreate that will allow me to have a more paper like texture that I want to achieve
Week 6
This week I am continuing with sketching up my comic I've run into a couple of problems like where to put a speech bubbles and not having enough space for certain chara more important moments to take up space such as on the first page without practise firm I would have liked to make the panel with her some bleeding bigger however I wanted to emphasise what she looked likethe top panels morein the flashback will emphasisethis anyway.
for the flashbacks I've decided to use a slightly different start of illustration and texture-to push forward to the viewer that-this is a flashbackI will say use monochrome palette consisting of Blues and greys-and red for the blood this is something I will continue the next few weeks in my own time
Week 7
This week we began with lip syncs for this we watched a couple of videos of characters and their mouth movements the different animation techniques used to create this.
we then looked at a bunch of audio files then I created mine maps from a couple of them for this I studied not only the pitch of their voice but the rate in which they were saying it and what emotion this brought about.I also lookedbut how they were saying sentences or specific words ie weather the pitch went up at the end of the sentence which would imply a question you will see this on files in my multiple my maps that I created. I decided to gowiththe brain damage audio in the end they felt this had a witty sarcasm to itthought I would be able toconvey through bodily movementon the expression. for this I started working on my character designs promptlywhich I found fairly straightforwardas I wanted to create simplistic character designslooked almost Quentin Blake like reflecting the underlying foreboding under the sarcasm.
For next week I willhave developed my character design.
Week 8
This lesson I mainly develop my character design further and worked on my storyboard. I've made a few Draughts of my storyboardand I am happy with the outcome I have also decided for my animation I want to keepaGrady pencil lineas I feel thisgives the animation a more illustrative feel.
Week 9
This week we began the lesson reviewing our comic books, I was mainly praised for my use of texture and illustration as well as my colour palette, the main thing that I had to work on wa my text so my story could more easily be understood.
For the second half of the day we continued with the lip sync, where I planned out the mouth movements for the characters, Rachel showed us how to make brushes out of something we had drawn this allowed me to curate a brush set of mouths with assigned sounds to the mouth.now that I have properly blocked out my animation in premier I know its timings I can begin the animation process. When I began animating last time I was troubling to curate body movements that looked realistic, I will have to video myself doing these movements to make them more accurate.
As for the mouth movements, even tho I have set shapes for them I want to exaggerate the mouth shapes to reinforce the sarcastic tone of the audio.
Week 10
After reviewing the timing for my lip sync me and my teacher agreed that it was good and to go ahead and start animating, he recommended that I egin key framing the entire animation then do the in between after this.
I wanted to focus on micro movements for the first cut, instead of big gestures, for this, as I. Felt it translated the awquard nature of my character best. We discussed moving back on a chair to show dicumport, I had started this animation and had him jig himself up by his elbows however I think that it is much more reaslistic to move himself up by his hands as we tried doing it ourselves on the chair.
So I am currently key framing this scene.
Week 11
This week I continued with my lip sync. I managed to retreavre my work that I thought I had lost, this prompted me to organise my work more on one drive and make two folders one with old work and one with new work.
When animating I realised that the quality reduced when I played it this prompted me to make my lines thicker. I spent the lesson blocking out the speech of the doctor and his movements, and animated the patients face reaction. When doing this I noticed that I didn’t like how much his faced moved in such a short span of time so I cut some of the frames out to make his reaction less quick and more subtle.
Right now I am properly animating and adding the in between so of the first cut which I plan to tray and finish today and block out the mouth movements.
Week 12
When attempting my backgrounds it was a bit drab and lifeless, I wanted to curate a simular atmosphere that the characters give off. I wanted the doctor's office to look almost surreal and bizarre. To finalise this design, I will sketch this up a few times in proctreate and look up inspiration (moodboard) for this I was thinking of drawing this up on procriate then transporting it in.
I decided in the end just to make the backgrounds on to paint, as then there wouldn’t be any overlaps with the transparent characters.as for the final parts of my animation, all went smoothly and I am very happy with it.
I also managed to get the text for my comic done however there is one panel at the end that is coloured however I havent had time to properly go into it to make the colouring look like the first pages (non flashback pages) however I think that it still gets the message across.
