Dating to the 6th century CE, the mosaic depicts a face emerging from swirling acanthus leaves an ancient symbol of nature, rebirth, and the wild, untamed world beyond the empire's marble walls. While the "Green Man" is more commonly associated with medieval European churches, this rare Byzantine example reveals how older, pagan motifs continued to echo through Christian imperial art.
