Ophelia rubbed one eye, nodding slowly at her father’s suggestion.
“Tea… yeah, I want tea. The way auntie Vee makes it, though. I like the way she makes it. Not you, daddy.”
“Papa..?”
Ophelia peeked her head through the doorway, her round eyes wide. She wasn’t sure if it was Oliver in the kitchen this late at night— she hoped it was him, the light was on, the soft whistle of the kettle a sign that tea was being made. The reason for the tea, she didn’t know. But she did know she needed her dad.
Oliver was tired. Beyond tired, actually. He spent the last four hours trying to fix his fences and keep worm out of his garden— something that got harder to do every day. He set traps for the little bugger, but every time, he went right through. Oliver needed him to stop.
But more importantly, he needed to sleep. The tea was supposed to help him, his dark eyes locked onto the flame beneath the kettle as he boiled his water. A cup sat on the counter besides it, a white mug with tea leaves and honey already placed in it. Just waiting for the water that would tie it all together.
He snapped out of his sleepy trance at the sound of his young daughter’s voice, turning around to glance back to her. At the sight of his child, he put a smile on, brows creasing.
“Hey there, sweet pea…” he said gently, turning to look at her. “It’s real late now, what on earth are you doin’ up? You should be in bed by now. Sleepin’.”

“Yeah, theres monsters… they’re…”
Ophelia sniffled, walking into the kitchen just to climb into the chair besides her papa. Her foot got caught on the hem of her nightgown, and she kicked it out.
“Monsters in my head. I keep hearin’ an’ seeing them. They’re all over, an’ Í saw one! In the dark. Stand in’ by my door…”
“Papa..?”

“I, um…”
She shifted, still half hidden behind the doorway. Ophelia clasped her hands in front of her, eyes fixated on the wooden floor below.
“I can’t sleep, papa… s’ too hard for me to sleep, there’s a… theres monsters…”
“Papa..?”
