not to be like both sides are wrong, and only i’m right, but i have been thinking about sabrina’s album cover controversy. to me, it’s pretty evident that she is going to be exploring her own compliance in getting into relationships where she gets treated badly or well like a dog. while manchild is a tongue-in-cheek mocking song that is all about how she just keeps stumbling into bed with these loser men, woe is me, there is an obvious irony to lines like “won’t you let an innocent woman be?” “i swear they choose me, i’m not choosing them.” sabrina is hardly an innocent doe-eyed girl. she is very sharp and experienced in relationships, and no one is forcing her to date these men. the music video further emphasizes this point by showcasing her hitchhiking into increasingly more ridiculous automobiles with increasingly more ridiculous men who all let her down in various absurd and/or violent ways. and yet the closing shot of the video is her getting out of one car and immediately running over and jumping into the next, continuing the cycle. so while the song on the surface externalizes the blame for her mistreatment to basically everyone but her, the subtext is all about how sabrina is the one doing this to herself. when i see the album cover of her smiling at the camera on her knees while a man holds her hair like a leash, i see a deep and very uncomfortable self-awareness and acknowledgement happening here. it’s obviously going to be dressed up in the shiny pop music veneer and sabrina’s signature brand of dry humor, but this is a very sensitive topic that most upcoming pop girls wouldn’t touch with a ten feet pole because it is humiliating to admit that you’re complicit in your own mistreatment and degradation. that you aren’t just posing as a dog, but you actually let men treat you like one. manchild isn’t just the first single from the album but also the opening track, setting the stage for what the album will be exploring. and again while on the surface it looks like your usual my ex is a loser classic fare, in actuality it is all about how sabrina is deluding herself about her choice of partners. “manchild, why you always come running to me?” she asks, and i’m willing to bet that she is going to be answering that question in the album, eventually coming to the conclusion that these things aren’t as one-sided as she initially presented them to be. from what i’ve seen, sabrina is very smart and very deliberate when it comes to her branding. i highly doubt she chose such a sensational image just to “appeal to the male gaze.” yes the picture is meant to play into that trope, but hardly in a glorifying way.

they were so afraid of making ellie unlikable it’s hurting my brain, it’s so bad!! they made her so incompetent. she had no actual fighting scene where she could show her skills because apparently, according to the writers, she has no skills aside from getting bit and jumping head first into action. she gets captured and she gets freed 5 seconds later not through her abilities but by dumb luck. she bulldozes her way through the building to nora - there’s no cunning, no stealth, no finesse. she beats her and it’s brutal but then she kills owen and mel by accident and feels regret over them when the entire point of their deaths was that they were on purpose. she’s angry and grieving and, even in the show, she says she will kill them all, so why the sudden backtracking? why is she begging for her life, when she has never once done that before? the writers have massacred my girl, they ruined her arc so bad i fear there’s no way back from it

Jurdan gets funnier and funnier the more you think about them and realize how much of a big loser both of them are when it comes to love.

Mfs get married to supposedly "form a trustworthy alliance" -> Cardan exiles Jude the next day to impress her, because apparently his rizz disappears when it truly matters 💀 -> Jude takes it seriously, stays in the human world for months and is salty af -> Cardan cries himself to sleep and writes pathetic little letters to her. Like wow you did that to yourself you dumb bitch 😭

And don't get me STARTED on their dumbass confessions. Cardan's was, I'm pretty sure, 80% on a whim. Like, maybe he had prepared the words in his mind but he didn't plan to confess to her right then and there at such a bad time. Says "well you probably already guessed as much" at the end then RUNS AWAY probably because he's overwhelmed and Jude is left standing there like???? No I fucking didn't guess you liked me lmao??? I'm dumb af bro, should've been this direct from the start :')

And Jude's is also hilarious because she says it kind of hurriedly as soon as they're alone, since she had promised herself to tell him the first moment they get together. Girlie confesses and CARDAN DOESN'T BELIEVE HER 😭 so homegirl has to EXPLAIN in DETAILS when she thinks she started to fall for him, why she started to like him, why she believed he didn't like her and why she felt the need to hide it. And ONLY after that whole ass explanation Cardan's finally like "omg!!! You liked me because I'm clever and funny?!?? Omgggg..."

Those fuckers were really married for months before fumbling their way through awkward confessions because they can't indulge in the thought that the other likes them. Like they were legit EMBARRASSED to admit that they like eachother while being MARRIED. Please this is so unserious, get real.

i think fans of the game, particularly sapphic fans of the game, are allowed to discuss their frustrations to the changes in ellie and dina's relationship

i even talked to my bisexual bestie this morning who hasn't played the games and doesn't know the original source material and even she got the ick from dina's behavior in episode 3 and how disrespectful and selfish it was

for so many of us this was the first time our sexuality actually felt represented in a mainstream game like this

and for so many of those special moments to be taken away from us is painful

i really don't buy all this discourse about "people's thoughts haven't evolved in 25 years" bullshit

even in that council meeting in episode 3 there was all of this talk about how they're not a religious community and they don't all share the same religion

homophobic hate stems from christian nationalism

in 25 years where survival is the only priority people's views are going to change

gay people existed in 2003

i know many people online discussing this show weren't alive then but i was and not everybody in the country was a homophobe

also dina is the games is jewish and in 2003 cultural christianity was far more homophobic than cultural juddaism but we seem to have done away with dina's religion entirely in the show

for her to say "the other one" in episode 1 and "you're gay i'm not" in episode 3 it sucks

it's clearly written by a straight man in his 50s who cares more about homophobe redemption arcs than he does bisexual representation

what dina's saying and doing is hurtful to ellie in a way that she wasn't in the game, dina in the game is hopelessly devoted to ellie

this is a completely different story and those of us who care about the source material are allowed to be hurt
