I should read the study to see how they got participants.
I mean, did they state in the spiel (either in posters for volunteers, or calls to volunteers) that there would be an electric shock element?
Cause that probably would create one helluva participant bias from the get-go.
"Hey, we're doing a study, you can either sit quietly in a room staring at a wall for 15min, or you can choose to shock yourself in those 15min. Would you like to participate?"
"Would I? Sign me up!"
[On the not-into-pain/getting-shocked end of the spectrum: sitting perfectly silent staring at a wall for 15min sounds so soo good. Especially if I'm getting some nominal amount of money for it or something. It reminds me of the time I went to an academic conference with a friend (we were attending & rooming together) and after going to several panels I told them I was going back to the room to sit and recharge. They came with. And for 30min, I sat on the bed and stared at the wall. It was blissful. And then I got up and went back to the conference. They were, apparently, somewhat unnerved. Weak sauce.]

"I bet it doesn't hurt that bad, I don't have time for this shit."

Women throughout (American and English) history worked. The idea that in the past the sole responsibility of women was domestic labor and childrearing is largely inaccurate for the majority of women in these societies. Women were expected to do domestic labor like cooking and cleaning and raising children AND work to bring income to their family, this was true for the average woman, excluding the upper middle class/wealthy. If a woman’s husband owned a tavern or restaurant, she also cooked and kept bar and did the duties associated with the business. If a woman’s husband was a (small scale/subsistence/tenant) farmer, the woman did farm labor. Often a woman was expected to do labor related to her husband’s job.
Women also had vocations and forms of income unrelated to their husband. The nature of these jobs changed over time but many women did things like weaving, embroidery, crafting, beer brewing, chicken tending and laundress work to bring income. Women with skills were seen as better marriage candidates because they’d make money for their husband.
My great-great-great-great grandmother told fortunes and did farm labor, my great-great-great grandmother was a midwife, my great-great grandmother worked in a textile factory for most of her adult life and my great grandmother was a school lunch lady.
This is why it makes me irate when women on the right say things like “feminism forced me to get a job instead of being allowed to stay home with my children” before feminism you would have had to tend house, raise your children and bring income to your husband. Now, at the very least, the money is hopefully your own. Women were always in the workforce, their work was not recognized.

Great news! Belgium today becomes the first country in the world where sex workers can sign a legal employment contract and gain access to all employment-dependent social security (which includes saving for a pension, paid pregnancy leave, paid sick leave etc.). It gives sex workers more rights and makes them less dependent on the goodwill of their employer because they now have state protection through a legal contract.

Genuinely don't know what it's called but there's a particular way of violating reality that doesn't work. For example, I am willing to accept an omegaverse university AU of nearly any fandom you care to name (except, for some reason, Sherlock, because I have an inexplicable hatred for unilock). However, a lot of Star Wars university AUs specifically fail on this aspect: they make Anakin an engineering PhD student and Obi-Wan something like literature or classics, and then they make Anakin his TA or GA.
You can't do that. Absolutely not. Anakin is unqualified for that and a university would not do it in any case. A university would literally hire a junior or senior undergraduate workstudy student to do as much of that work as possible first. They would do NOTHING other than do that and make the prof do all his own grading.
Is there a name for "I will accept [wild fantasy premise] but not [ordinary wrong thing]?" Please tell me there's a name for this. Probably someone who studies lit will know? I'm a systems person I don't know from lit theory just like Anakin
#my mind also immediately jumped to the ''it's the walrus v fairy at your door question''#Fairy at my door - OK. I may have to reevaluate my understanding of some very fundamental beliefs I have about the world#Or I have a black mold problem that desperately needs to be addressed.#Walrus at my door - NO. I know how walruses work. They have very specific behaviors and are bound by the reality I know and accept.

Sounds like we need to also make real consequences for the members of Congress who have failed to raise the minimum wage for over 1.5 decades.
The last increases (from 5.85 to 6.55 to, finally, 7.25) were a pittance compared to inflation.
[This also doesn't account for tipped workers]
Cap the rents/house-prices, and raise the minimum wage to an actual living wage.

time to bring the Truman housing caps back:

I see a lot of people talking about how great it would be for sex workers to unionize, so I want to point out that in the UK we have done so already!
We need to get the word out to sex workers in the UK who don't already know about the union, so sharing is appreciated particularly if you're a sex worker or you're in the UK and might have UK sex worker followers.
SWU is a branch of sex workers, in the UK, organising with BAFWU for better working conditions and fighting to change the industry from within.
We fight for ‘Worker’ status sex workers (strippers, full-service sex workers and more) basic worker protections while allowing them to retain the label of self-employed and the associated freedoms. We seek to improve conditions through collective negotiation and individual casework. We organise to claim basic rights at work, such as annual leave, sick pay, a guaranteed basic wage for those working at venues, and the right to organise and be represented by a trade union.
This union has been immensely valuable to me. It gives us access to other sex workers who we can get safety advice from, a huge number of resources, and the ability to push for changes to the policies of escorting websites or strip clubs or porn sites.
You can learn more on SWU's website here and join the union!
Membership to the union costs roughly £6 per month and for me personally, from help with taxes and support getting money back from clients who've refused to pay me, the union has saved me far more money than I've spend on union dues.

Oh-
Yknow it's actually possible to have disabled characters in horror without their disability Being The Horror. Believe it
#Bird Box irritated me a lot for this#It had this really cool world-building element ''some people have a psychotic break when faced with The Thing & continue to be overall OK''#the people who saw The Thing and functioned fine afterward weren't explored beyond ''and now they are 'evil' of sorts''#No. Nooooo - you brought in this cool element of someone who is independently navigating this new world and can use their sense of sight#And you just...made them Oh No Scary Psychotic#typical#It was a nice change of pace that people who were blind were now in a prepared-for-this-shit situation that sighted people were NOT#If Bird Box hadn't had that cool concept in it-I wouldn't be as irritated cuz I wouldn't've known the world-building I was being deprived o#Oh and to OP's point - the fear was that you would either 1) kill yourself on seeing The Thing or 2) become a psychotic evil person#And if you become an ''evil'' psychotic person you...I duuno man I feel like there are other options than just hurting those around you#True the psychotic people may have thought they were helping the other sighted people to see The Truth or The Light or whatever#But that's also a lazy reduction of someone who is psychotic#I dunno it just felt like they had a really nifty thing they could have introduced and given nuance to and they just Did Not.

🇺🇸FDA advisory issued: avoid these tattoo inks contaminated with dangerous bacteria🇺🇸
issued may 7, 2025
this is NOT a recall. these dangerous inks remain on shelves and in tattoo parlors, unless they choose to stop selling and using them. tattoo artists are legally allowed to continue using these contaminated inks, despite the risks.
Audience •Consumers who are considering a new tattoo •Tattoo artists •Retailers of tattoo inks Product FDA laboratory analysis has found that the following tattoo inks are contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms: •Sacred Tattoo Ink, Raven Black; CI# 77266; Lot#: RB0624; Best Before: June 28 2027 •Sacred Tattoo Ink, Sunny Daze; CI# 21095; Lot#: SD1124; Best Before: Nov 1 2027 Purpose The FDA is alerting consumers, tattoo artists, and retailers of the potential for serious injury from use of tattoo inks that are contaminated with bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Tattoo inks contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms can cause infections and lead to serious health injuries when injected into the skin during a tattooing procedure, since there is an increased risk of infection any time the skin barrier is broken.
some emphasis mine. remember to click the FDA link for the full announcement. the affected inks are from the manufacturer called sacred tattoo inks, and they do not expire until 2027.
pseudomonas aeruginosa, according to the world health organization, "poses one of the greatest threats to humans in terms of antibiotic resistance". it is a known cause of serious illnesses like sepsis, which can be deadly. treatment of infections can be very difficult. basically, this pathogen is some really nasty shit. it was not the only contaminant found, just the only contaminant named.
and you might be wondering, "why is this not a recall?"
the FDA does not clear tattoo inks for use before they get sold and used in the US. it is entirely up to the ink manufacturer to test their products before selling them. tattoo inks that are contaminated with microbes or that contain unlisted ingredients are not always recalled, and tattoo inks sold in the united states are frequently contaminated (source 1, source 2, source 3, source 4) and/or mislabeled.
in the US, tattoo inks are considered cosmetic and are lacking in many regulations that could protect people from danger. they are not regulated and recalled like food or drugs are, and there are 0 FDA-approved tattoo inks. it is largely up to consumers and tattoo facilities to make safe choices about tattoo inks, and this is one such case.
basically, I (rune) want you to understand that noticeable gaps in federal tattoo ink regulations are not at all a new thing.
Recommendations for Consumers Ask the tattoo artist or studio about the tattoo inks they use and avoid the tattoo inks listed above, due to risk of infection and injury. Recommendations for Tattoo Artists, and Retailers Avoid using or selling the tattoo inks mentioned above, due to risk of infection and injury. FDA Monitoring The FDA will continue to work with manufacturers and retailers to help ensure contaminated products are removed from the market.
note that these are recommendations and not requirements. the FDA recommends these inks stop being used and sold. confusingly, the FDA says they will "help ensure" the contaminated products get removed from the market, despite their help largely being, and I cannot emphasize this enough, recommendations.
it is important for everyone interested in tattoos in the US to understand the lack of federal regulations surrounding tattoo inks. as the FDA mentions in their advisory, consumers are advised to ask their tattoo artist about what inks they use, and then refuse the tattoo if the artist uses these inks. because again, THIS IS NOT A RECALL.
Who to Contact Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse health experiences at FDA's SmartHub.
and here are pictures of the recalled inks.
if the manufacturer chooses to voluntarily recall these inks, and I REALLY fucking hope they do, I will add that information in a reblog.
stay safe and take care!
