“It isn’t that simple, Jane.” His voice was rough and in a sudden burst of movement, he turned and stepped away from her. He had to tear his gaze away from the familiar planes of her face, or he wouldn’t able to think rationally, to voice the arguments he spent hours rehearsing in his head.
“Even if I do want it, do want you, do want us-” His fists clenched on either side of him and suddenly he longed for the feel of Mjölnir in his hand, as if he could fight through this with his power and might alone. “-I don’t know if I am capable of making this relationship work. Capable of making you happy.” What could he offer her but stolen moments, the small pockets of time he had in the tumultuous whirl that made up his life?
“I cannot give you the entirety of who I am Jane, and you deserve no less than that.” Thor knew, in the depths of his soul, that what Jane looked for was endgame. He was far from it. He had too many promises to keep, too many obligations he had to fulfill. It made him wonder if he’d ever truly come to the point in his life where he’d meet someone and not need to look anymore for the next horizon, because all his days would end with her name on his lips.
“You’re right and it’s cowardly of me to hide behind my desire to protect you, even if it’s true. Even if it’s a desire that fills my very soul.” Though he remained a safe distance away, this time he knew he had to look at her - to show her, in his eyes, the depth of his words. “So I will speak frankly, even if it grieves me to say these words, for if I could I would never try to hurt you.”
“Love…I’ve tried to avoid such a thing all my life.” His lips twisted in a bitter smile. “I’ve treated all my past relationships with a cruelty till now I am ashamed to possess. I’ve discarded them, with the arrogant notion that if I wished to return, they’d be there. I’d leave the moment I felt the tides shift, before the current drags me under and all I’d think of day and night was that person. It frightens me, giving myself over so fully to someone else. And that is what you deserve Jane.” His gaze was haunted as he looked at her.
“All that and more.”
She can’t blame him, the fierce need he posses in wanting to protect her. It isn’t explained by her years of schooling in degrees but Jane knows, he has it in his golden veins. He needs to save and to protect because his body has willed him so, his soul has crowned him protector and not even she can attempt to free him of that, not even if it means her own independence.
“You make me sound like a child when you say it like that.” She offers her signature nervous humor, its nervous and the little laugh that escapes her like bells shakes as though they were caught in the middle of a winter. She was reckless and she was a bigger danger to herself than anything that might from aquatinting herself with impossible variable and impossible people, but that is who Jane is. Jane needs to know.
Jane needs to know anything and everything, Jane’s hunger doesn’t lie in battle like his but in her knowledge. Jane doesn’t sleep not because she’s not tired but because her mind never stops running, never stops wanting more. Jane isn’t Jane if she’s safe and hidden, Jane can’t imagine a life where she plays it safe or where she doesn’t at the very least fight for what she wants. And that’s the case in this very moment, she knows he won’t notice it or maybe he doesn’t want to notice when she puffs her chest up at his words. When her eyes turn electric and when she tries to steady her voice, she is going to fight for him.
She can have all the knowledge she seeks. She can love him. And she can protect herself.
“You do not get to make that choice for me,” She begins, the small tone rises towards the end but shakes incredibly, it’s almost like she might fall apart from the fierceness that builds inside of her, “You do not get to tell me what is safe for me or who I get to want.” The fight in her is big enough that it becomes ever surprising that she can even keep it all inside, “I’ve always been in danger. I’ve always been in way over my head and that doesn’t change anything. Being with you, no…..” There’s a trillion red lights in her head as she starts to say what she shouldn’t and yet she doesn’t stop herself, even if she knows better.
“Loving you doesn’t change that. I can protect myself and you should know that by now, I thought you would know that by now..” She’s struggling with her rawness now, she isn’t used to feeling this vulnerable, “I-If you don’t want this say it. Say it. Say it Thor. Don’t act like it’s to protect me, because that doesn’t make you brave, that makes you a coward.” She winces at her own words now but she can’t take her burning eyes off of him, “If you want whatever this is to end, do it because your heart doesn’t want it…Do it because you don’t want it…”

“Jane’s brilliant, as always.” Thor spoke and it wasn’t a lie, per say - Jane was indeed brilliant and would always be, but regarding her current state he was unfortunately just in the dark as Natasha.
“And yes, while saving the universe is a noble calling-” He grinned widely, showing off his pearly whites. “-sometimes us heroes need a well-deserved break, won’t you agree?”
“How is she, by the way?” Natasha continued to question.
“That would be quite the gift, Thor.” She sipped her drink and nodded at his next comment. “That’s very true. Good company is getting harder and harder to find nowadays. So, this is actually very refreshing.”

Thor: < Thank you, JARVIS. I’m on my way. > Thor: < Honestly wouldn’t know how I’d survive without you. > Thor: < You are quite possibly the best. I’m sorry for having questioned you. >

JARVIS: < Apology accepted. Based on your current location I have calculated that the number 7 train line is the fastest route across the East River. The next train is scheduled to arrive in approximately five minutes - a map has been sent to your Stark device. >

“There’s no trick, no matter how many times you insist.” Thor crossed his arms over his chest. “Mjölnir can only be wielded by someone worthy, and while you’re a highly exceptional fellow Steve-” He didn’t bother mentioning that once, he almost feared that the other man could have actually lifted it, only later on did he attribute it to the dim lighting. “-I’m afraid you’re not quite ready for the full weight of Asgard’s rule.”
“How about a compromise? I’ve seen replicas of our weapons in those...toy stores? The plastics one they make for children. I’m assuming they’ll suffice for a simple Halloween costume?”
“You want the shield too? I’ll make an exchange for the hammer. There’s gotta be a trick to pickin’ it up, right? I mean, you put the hammer in an elevator, and the elevator goes up – doesn’t make the elevator worthy.”

“He has the promise of one, that’s for certain.” Thor said generously, aware of the daring feats the masked hero had performed around the City. “At the very least, he already has the costume for it.”
“And I could, couldn’t I? Pull of the shield. And I hardly think Steve would disagree. He and I have an understanding.”
At Thor’s specification, Gwen let out an open laugh. After her own encounter with the other God, she wasn’t exactly a fan. “You know what? I think the best thing I can do right now is simply agree.” Stifling her chuckle behind the palm of her hand, she quipped a brow and nodded her head. “Of course. I mean, it’s not technically even using my idea as Spider-Man’s not exactly an Avenger - though much to his dismay. Probably. You could definitely pull off the shield.”

“You know you are.” Thor’s voice was gruff. How odd that they once shared such intimacies so easily before ( it seemed a lifetime ago ), and now he felt a flush creeping up the back of his next with a single, simple compliment. “It goes without saying.”
Before he could stammer out another painfully idiotic sentence, Sif effectively steered them back into safer territories ( though he wasn’t certain whether he should be disappointed or not. ) “I’ve been thinking about going as Captain America...you’ve met him, I’m certain? Blonde, handsome, goes by the name of Steve Rogers?”
“I’ve been out of my armor for plenty occasions, perhaps you just weren’t present to witness it.” Sif had not meant for it to come off so sharp, truly she hadn’t. She was silent for a while before offering Thor an apologetic smile before twirling around in her dress coyly.
“Why can you not just tell me I’m pretty and be done with it?” She hummed before clearing her throat and clasping on a necklace.
“So has that brilliant mind of yours come up with a costume yet?” She asked, hurriedly changing the subject.

“Ah yes. I shall never forget those ‘little’ games of yours, that’s for certain.” Thor spoke dryly, eyeing the way she twisted her hair around the end of her finger - how fitting. “And if you’re referring to Loki’s systematic destruction of this world...yes indeed, his love was felt by many here.”

“Oh don’t be so coy with me, Thor. I thought you loved our little games. I was never boring for you.” Amora said to him with a sense of satisfaction as she twisted a long gold lock of her hair around her finger. “You and Loki seem to love this place so much. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.”

Thor nodded, his face utterly serious. “Scarlet Witch is indeed a woman worthy of honoring. My only concern however-” At this point, he glanced down at himself, as if taking stock of his form. “-is that my physique might not exactly match hers.”
“Yeah! I’m going to go with my girlfriend, so I’ll be dressed as her to surprise her.” Wow. Was Thor really taking the bait on this? Maybe Peter should reconsider a career in super villainy if it was this easy to trick the good guys. He could get them all in dresses by noon.
“Hnn..What better way to show team spirit than dressing as the Scarlet Witch? I can’t think of a better person for the mighty Thor to flatter, can you?” Please work. This would be the best, also please don’t let Thor kill me when he finds out.

JARVIS: < Sir has been informed of your imminent arrival and promised ramifications should the situation be proven a ‘joke’. >

Without a doubt, there was a one thing Tony and Thor had in common - towering arrogance, and now they had the opportunity to use it.
Following several booming declarations that he’d be the one to emerge victorious, Thor then devoted all his considerable energy to the game, his focus laser-sharp. They had garnered somewhat of a crowd ( as to be expected ) and what had started as a competition between the two of them had already extended to their audience - exuberant betting on who’d win ( or who’d be first to fall down to the floor, drunk. )
And despite his godly stamina, Thor found himself swaying slightly, a small mountain of red cups at his side and scattered along the floor. Gripping the edge of the table, he squinted as he tried to take aim, his arm arcing backward before releasing the ball -
- only for it to hit Tony squarely in the face.
There was a moment of silence before Thor burst out into laughter. “Well, I think that’s one way to ensure my victory.”
Spooooooky Halloween
“Soddenly drunk… yeah, yes, yes. Much soddening will be had. But the key to this particular game is also velocity control. Plus, you’ve never played my version of beer-pong,” he grins; the guys bouncing the ball back and forth are playing it simple, but he intends to introduce an element that’ll make the odds a little more even.
“Avengers Beer-Pong!”

Thor studied Steve from head to toe. “We have similar physiques, so it shouldn’t be too far fetched.”
“And even if we didn’t, I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to try on your suit...this offer includes your shield, of course?”
“I gotta warn you – you put on the suit, and you might never take it off. It’s surprisingly comfortable.” He ran a hand through his hair at the very thought. “Alright, so we’ll dress as each other. Think anyone will notice?”

Thor raised a brow. “This is common practice, I take it?” He had his doubts, but he knew next to nothing about regular Halloween traditions so he deemed it best to trust the younger man’s advice. “I take it, from your earlier statements, you’re going as your significant other?” It was sweet, Thor supposed...in an odd way. “Do you have another powerful female figure in mind that I can emulate?”
“Not at all, but the bravest warriors tend to wear a costume that flatters a powerful female figure in their life. If you have someone like that to show off how feminine and powerful you find women, you’d be quite a hit.” Nodding over to Thor. Please god, don’t let Thor find out this was all just a joke. The end result is almost worth it.
#( peter parker )#i'm afraid it's terribly easy to trick thor#it'll be worth it to get him in a dress though lol

“Yes there is that.” Thor conceded her point - the helmet was indeed heavy and cumbersome and he wasn’t entirely sure how Loki managed it. “But I was also referring to his abject lack of style. I’m afraid my brother doesn’t have an eye for such things, but that’s the least of his many flaws.” Thor bared his teeth in a grin. “Jeans, you say? That is indeed quite convenient. I wonder though, if you’ll permit me of course, that I borrow from your own idea a bit and dress as another Avenger? I think I’d make a fetching...Captain America, for instance.”
“I can see your side more than his, honestly. Other than likely understandable bias… that thing doesn’t look too comfortable. Plus, if you’re going to Stark’s party, I wouldn’t imagine you’d want to balance that thing your head all night long.” Gwen made a face before smiling much more brightly through his small. “Easiest costume ever, all you really need is a pair of jeans.”

Thor looked affronted. “On the contrary, I feel it is my abundance of imagination that is making it difficult for me to select a costume.”
Then he took her appearance in, the beautiful flowing dress and the crown that settled against her brow, and the first words from his lips were. “I haven’t seen you out of your armor in ages.”

“You are much too invested in this holiday.” Sif noted as she placed the tiara securely on her head. She had already decided to go as Helen of Troy, much to Stark’s insistence that she come in costume.
She smoothed down her dress before turning to Thor and clearing her throat.
“Perhaps put a pair of ears on? I hear that is what everyone who lacks in imagination does.”

“I do not believe miss is the right word, Amora.” Thor spoke dryly. Dealings with the Enchantress always left him feeling disoriented. He was never truly certain if she was his ally or his foe.

“Still...you surprise me. What brings you here to Midgard?”
Amora smirked as she looked back at Thor. She was the thorn in his side and his aid the next. Either way, she kept things interesting to say the least. “Thor, son of Odin, playing dress up? How adorable.” She teased playfully. “I hope you have not missed me too much.”
