"Punishment works!!!" We're drowning in three to four generations of people so pants-shittingly terrified of ever being wrong that half of everyone has constructed a worldview wherein they never even consider the possibility that they could be wrong and the other half behaves like one wrong move will make anything or anyone explode violently into a million irreperable pieces. I don't think it works guys

Sometimes I do ship something and it's not unpopular its just that fanon harbors enough popular misconceptions to make the content frequently unreadable. So I will be like "can I have my ship please" and the internet will go "sure! here are a thousand results!" and I will go "is it actually my ship or is it some guys who are basically totally different characters in all meaningful ways that someone is having masquerade as my blorbos?" and the answer is yes often enough that I give up

Favorite Visual Storytelling of 2024: Cdrama Edition
Although I spent the better part of 2024 complaining about the state of Chinese dramas, one thing I did appreciate seeing in this year's lineup was all the lovely cinematography and production design on display. Not only did these visuals look great, but they were meaningful to the story.
In no particular order, here are my top picks of the year...
Favorite Use of Color: The Double
Evocative and theatrical, The Double's cinematography definitely caught people's attention, splitting viewers into those who liked it and those who thought it was too much.
But what always struck me as refreshingly unique about the drama was its careful use of color . Check out how the following scenes have a completely different feeling because of their color palettes:
Whether it's the fairytale romanticism of a white blossom forest or the queasy yellow and pink of a brothel, the show's colors always give us a sense of mood (and character) without needing much exposition. Really efficient storytelling!
Favorite Production Design #1: Fangs of Fortune
If I included screenshots of all my favorite sets and costumes from my next pick, we'd be here all day.
I've always loved the energy and symbolism of Director Guo Jingming's visual storytelling, but his production design team in Fangs of Fortune really outdid themselves. The scale, shapes, and most importantly texture of each set gives the show a sweepingly escapist quality that we rarely seen in Cdramas. It is true high fantasy come to life, asking us to reflect on what it means to be human through the eyes of those who are otherworldly.
Favorite Use of Production Design #2: To the Wonder
I was uncomfortable with the tacit political messaging of To the Wonder but the amount of care and detail that went into its production design is undeniable. People seem to mostly praise the drama for its idyllic on-location shots but I think it's the prop design and interiors that really sing because they provide insight into lives we rarely see represented on screen.
Favorite Use of Light: Love in a Dream

When I see dramas like Love in a Dream, it makes me wish the industry would just throw money at all the talented and creative visual directors in the short drama circuit. A masterclass in contrast, this drama is absolutely gorgeous, and its dramatic use of chiaroscuro lighting makes it look like a cross between a Renaissance painting and shadow puppet show.
Was I always able to follow the plot? No, but who cares when every other scene looks like art.
Favorite Use of Camera Language #1: Tender Light
Tender Light is a great example of using cinematography to establish the right tone for a story.
The story follows a woman being accused of murdering her abusive husband and the camera language actually mimics the social fallout of his death. Look at how it uses dirty framing, overhead shots, tracking, etc. to give the story a voyeuristic and surveillant feeling. It's like we (the audience) are being forced to invade the privacy of these characters, and in doing so, the show implicates us in the nasty gossip that surrounds our FL as much as the local townspeople spreading it.
Favorite Use of Camera Language #2: Regeneration

From the opening shot of Regeneration , we learn that this is a world where it's difficult to distinguish reality from its equally compelling reflection. The drama is all about the stories people weave and the show plays with subjective cinematography to make us question what we perceive as the truth.
Runners-Up
I dropped Blossom before I could get a sense of its visual storytelling, but the drama has Director Zeng Qingjie's signature dreamy, romantic visuals . Bonus: Li Yunrui looking hot in his gray wig.

Riverside Code at Qingming Festival didn't quite work for me as a case-breaking story but the amount of research they put in the costuming and prop design is incredible. I hope Director Yang Fan gets more opportunities to direct big budget period dramas because his attention to detail is immaculate .
--
And that's a wrap!
What was everyone else's favorite Cdrama visuals of 2024?

Fangs of Fortune (Bai Ze Ling): perfect on pure aesthetics alone, but also it will tear your heart out while being very gay.

I was lured in to this show by Tumblr gifsets and friends on Bluesky talking about how queer and poly this show is. I'm old and I've been in fandom more than half my life. I know how to read queer subtext. I'm also pretty well versed in cdramas, so again, I know how to read subtext. So I went into this ready to, well, read the subtext.

But no this show is just puts the queer it right there in the text. The vague information we have about Chinese censorship repeatedly left me asking, 'wait how are they getting away with this?' Like some of these jokes and implications are just so blatant it seems incredible this show ever made it to being broadcast. It just feels very much like queer media made for queer people even if t's more subtle than something western like Queer as Folk.

Even without the heavy coloring of gay this show is incredible and so much more than I expected from the title and the promo. The premise is essentially the death of the goddess, who governed relations between humans and demons, leads to an influx of demons in the human world. This brings together the goddess's disciple, Wen Xiao--seeking to restore the goddess's power. WX's childhood sweetheart, Zhuo Yichen--seeking to restore the demon-hunting bureau after the powerful demon Zhu Yan killed his father and brother. It opens on Zhu Yan, in human disguise as as Zhao Yuanzhou, volunteering to help the imperial court restore the demon-hunting bureau to quell the chaos. They are joined by Pei Sijing, a retired female general from the rival demon hunting sect, and a very young doctor (and comic relief) named Bai Jiu. It starts off as a sort of monster-of-the-week with a grim Scooby gang doing detective work and fighting monsters. Each major demon has a mini arc that relates to the larger case (restoring the power of the goddess to balance the realms), and they are repeatedly blocked by either the demons or the rival demon hunting sect. Each mini arc also acts as a mirror or parallel story to slowly revealed backstory of all the main characters as well. In true cdrama fashion it's a mix of adventure, intense emotional drama, romance, and comedy. And queer and poly jokes and romance. It also has a kind of manga vibe in the way the comedy is woven into the more serious story, and in the fantastical depiction of the characters and how the story unfolds.

It is also just insanely beautiful. Every single shot is lovely. The costumes, make up, and hair are incredible. The casting director made all the major demons inhumanly beautiful. The sets are spectacular. The effects are nicely done. Every bit of has the vague surreality of a fairytale. The perfection of each shot ads to the manga vibe, as if we're seeing each critical storytelling panel come alive. There's recurring water-based special effects that are just gorgeous. Based on aesthetics alone this show would be worth watching to me. That it is combined with a complex, very emotional story is a spectacular gift to the watcher. A lot of the negative reviews of this complain about the staginess or that it's overly contrived in how each scene is shot. But I think it's gorgeous, works perfectly with the storytelling, and if we criticize art on whether it achieves the goal it intended then this show is doing exactly and perfectly what it means to do and doing it beautifully.

Additionally the acting is also very good, but Neo Hou is the stand out for sure. I enjoyed him in Back from the Brink, especially the later part of the story, but in Fangs of Fortune he's transformed, utterly embodying the role, the way Dylan Wang is Dongfang Qingcang in Love Between Fairy and Devil. Neo Hou has the right look, a slightly uncanny beauty perfect for a gorgeous immortal not of this world. The show does incredible things with his styling between the various looks and personas the role requires. But in acting he somehow manages to utterly transform his face and demeanor to manifest each aspect of the character as story demands changes from him.

There is a lot of crying in this drama. Like early on I joked that there was going to be a character crying a single perfect tear in every ep. Lol nope. Multiple single perfect tears per ep and many outright full on sobbing scenes. This show is just waiting to rip your heart out and you see it right from the beginning. But it was such sweet pain all the way through. Just a truly engaging and utterly wrenching set of intertwined stories.

My only criticism is that the pacing falls apart in the last 3 episodes. But overall the story is solid through the end, though like so many cdramas, it's saved by the epilogue.

You should absolutely watch it if you want the chaotic bi polycule (it's her, her girlfriend, her boyfriend, her boyfriend's boyfriend who is also her boyfriend, their two idiot sons, and her boyfriend's ex-who is also eventually sort of his boyfriend again), or if you want your heart torn out and stomped on. Or even if you just like really gorgeous cinematic things. Also if you watch, please don't skip the ending credits, as they change as the arcs change, and the radiant joy Tian Jiarui has as he dances is an excellent antidote to the emotions of each episode.

#Putting this on my main because I wholeheartedly agree with this review and with the rec#Just... If you choose to watch be prepared for character deaths#Somehow even the many many mcd and MCD weren't a turnoff for me because the storylines were so beautiful and the emotions in them so raw#But just. Be ready to cry copiously if you wanna give this a watch but please please consider giving it a watch#It's criminally underrated imo#Even the fighting scenes in typical xianxia fashion that usually make me roll my eyes here were gorgeous dances that kept you captivated#Looking at you zyc#But also... Having watched some bts and knowing that many of pei sijing's most insane fighting coreographies#Were done without the help of wires cause she's a professional dancer... Like man not to be a lesbian but oh my fucking god#Also also#Seconding that this show is queer as fuck without needing an explicit queer label bc well. Censorship and all#But the thing is... Despite being a straight romance this show is also not very subtle at all about queer subtext#Anyway go watch this and then feel free to yell at me for your emotional damage. You're welcome#Fangs of fortune

If you use Duolingo, maybe don't anymore? The company is moving to be "AI-first" and is using AI to generate their content. Meaning, AI is now generating your language lessons.
They announced that they were going to use AI for this a while back but now they're annoucing that they're getting rid of the contractors reviewing the AI generated content. So, very soon Duolingo is just going to be AI generated slop that might not even be correct.
For alternatives, I'd recommend checking with your local library. For instance, mine offers Rosetta Stone for free if you have a library card.

Just a heads up, there are bots going around on AO3 accusing people of using AI. Considering the timing, this is likely AI bros' retaliation for AO3 users calling them out for scraping their work. Examples of what you might be sent:

IDGAF if the women in my fiction are empowering or aspirational, I'm an adult, I don't need role models, I want the women in my fiction to be interesting, and if that involves being pathetic, hypocritical, amoral, or trapped in a delightfully dysfunctional relationship so be it

Call me petty I guess cause everyone gotta make a living and everything, but I hate youtubers who hop on the AI trend for easy views, even when they think they're going against it. "I tried AI prompts for x creative thing and it sucked". Congratulations! And water is wet! Also, I hope you know I am never clicking on that video or any other video of yours now

Yet another out of context list of things that happened in a c-drama I'm watching (#2)
Because xianxia lends itself easily to this kind of shitposts and it's fun to compile them, sue me
Local woman wants to marry a fish. Seven dead five injured
"It's true, I did commit the unforgivable atrocities you are accusing me of. However—" "However what?" "In my defense, I am a poor little mew mew, sir. Can't you let go of my atrocities just this once?
Local yapper is unfortunately the only member of this adventurers' party who has an encyclopediac knowledge of How to Get Out of Situations, much to the party's continued chagrin. Mainly because he's the reason why these Situations™ happen in the first place
"I know I just said it's very hard to escape from this place, but there is actually an easy solution." "which is?" "To kill yourself." "why didn't you say that sooner"
There is a magic sword that glows in the presence of demons that conveniently only does so around enemies, mindful to spare the feelings of the demons in the party
Several times now: *sword glows* "there's a demon here" "haha very funny"
at one point, ML threatens to make out with a doll to to solve a problem that had befallen the group and that plan actually works
there is a "youths these days" moment where the (30k year old) ML laments that a 13 year old boy already knows stuff that he learned in his 370ies. This was about hand holding btw
What if we were former enemies turned reluctant friends but you made an oath to hand me your life and you taught me how to fulfill my potential as a swordsman to honor my bloodline. And what if I befriended you at a time when your loneliness and regrets made you not want to live anymore, showing you that there's good to life, too. What if we trusted each other implicitly with each other's lives but I couldn't forget how you killed my family and I hated you for it, still. And what if I invited you to share a dance with me. But. But, and hear me out. What if all the above and we were also straight, somehow. And into the same girl.
meanwhile the ML and FL's whole chemistry is based on "he pushed her on the swing once". The jokes write themselves
Btw, the ML's strategy to romance his girl seems to be that of teasingly insult her competence at every given opportunity. Yeah I can believe someone wrote this for a straight audience
Emotionally inept but well meaning big brother figure attempts to apologize to the boy he hurt by awkwardly throwing an apple at his face after being told that kids like sweets
#thyandra.txt#I wonder if anyone can guess the drama based on these#the name's fangs of fortune btw#don't watch unless you are okay with minor character death and depictions of suicide tho. fair warning. people drop like flies here

Tfw you unexpectedly cry a river watching a sad scene in a drama and you're like "ok. Hold on. Is it worth exploring why this particular theme and dynamic that I wasn't expecting to hit me this hard resonated so much with me it literally made tears stream down my face or am I just in the middle of my premenstrual syndrome"
#The feminine urge to psychoanalize myself every time I get invested in a new Blorbo Going Through It narrative#Vs pms making me emo over literally nothing#In my defense self analysis through the blorbo is actually pretty insightful sometimes#Thyandra.txt

What they don't tell you about writing is that as you write, you discover scenes and entire plots that you hadn't accounted for that need to be written. So you can spend two hours writing and editing only to realise you're further away from the finish line than you thought you were when you started

I feel like a thing I wish was more generally acknowledged across fandoms is that "I don't find this character sympathetic" and "This character was not intended to be sympathetic" are obviously connected but are, ultimately, two completely different statements that may not overlap at all.
Ultimately what you think about any given character is a completely subjective issue that has no right or wrong answer. The narrative may be trying to evoke sympathy for them, and you may just feel that it flat-out was not successful in doing that. You may look the author straight in the eye and say "Nope, I see what you're trying to do, but f*ck this guy actually, he's The Worst and that's all there is to it". And no one can tell you that you're wrong for doing so.
But when it comes to picking up on what the story is trying to do, whether you ultimately think it did a good job or not, I would argue there's at least some measure of objective reality. And I feel like people sometimes end up conflating them, so you end up with these posts like "I can't believe people sympathize with this character when the story clearly just wants you to hate them!" and it's like... yeah, I think people sympathize with this character because the story is very clearly and intentionally painting them as sympathetic. I could point you at a dozen different scenes that are clearly meant to evoke sympathy for This Character. You don't have to have found any of it compelling, but at a certain point recognizing it's there is a simple matter of reading comprehension.

So there's several layers of dramatic irony to this comment from Endeavor. He can kill a "bio-engineered freak" with no remorse here. But this was also the chapter when Endeavor met his twice over bio-engineered son for the first time since Sekoto Peak.
Like the high-end noumu, Dabi was also a patchwork existence pieced together from the dead. But on a fundamental level, Touya's existence was due to Endeavor's desire to bio-engineer his version of the perfect quirk.
It's also notable that while Endeavor's feelings about it were completely different, he used the same maneuver from this fight in his final battle with Dabi. He brought them both up into the sky until someone burned to ash
#:) yeah#This is why it made no sense for him to be the leader that successfully brought down ujiko#While going on a selfrighteous rant from his high horse the entire time#Like... He's a hypocrite. We all know this right#I wish horikoshi had actually gone somewhere with this foiling#The potential was all there... All he had to do was point out Enji's hypocrisy within the story... But nooooo heroes are untouchable :)#Bnha#Bnha critical#endeavor
