MAGELLANIC WOODPECKER
A unique woodpecker of the temperate forests of the Southern Cone (Chile & Argentina).
We visited the PN Tierra del Fuego in Argentina twice. Once in 30 October but we did not see it at all, just heard.
We went back 19 November to exact same area but this time our luck was sided with Mother Nature. We found a small group of Argentians watching "un pájaro grande negro con la cabeza roja" (a large bird, black with a red head). And yes, we found a male first, followed by the female. Our mission was acomplished.
Just take a look of the pictures!!!

SOME BIRDS FROM MONTAUK, SUFFOLK CO.; NY
During New Year's Eve & the New Year we were at Montauk. The weather was extremely pleasant (7-12º C), unusual for this time of the year (Dec 2022 - Jan 2023). Of of course I had the chance to take some photos of some bird species.
1-Trumpeter Swan, rare sighting in the area.
2-Red-breasted Nuthatch. Handsome little devil seen at Napeague SP.
3-Palm Warbler. Another rarity in the area. This individual was found on a empty lot in downtown Montauk. It is probably the Western race.

As soon there was enough sunlight I went out to check for our first Argentinian birds.

OUR LIFETIME TRIP IS COMING SOON!!!
Before this month ends we will flying South to the big city on the south shore of Río de la Plata.
Ten days later, we officially will be boarding a cruise ship on route the Antarctic.  For almost  3 weeks, visiting Antarctic Peninsula (BAT = British Antarctic Territories), South Georgia, and Las Malvinas (= Falklands).
Back to mainland, we will have a few days more to add more species of birds, mammals, flora, etc.
We will keep you posted as soon we have internet services (at the ship the service has to be paid and it is quite expensive, but we will see what happen while cruising).
The pictures above are some of the field guides, books we are studying for this amazing trip, and of course, looking to add more bird species to our life lists.

THE YEAR 2022 BIRD LIST: AN UPDATE!!
March 2022 is around the corner while February is giving the last kicks.
Almost two months have passed since I started tallying birds species for the current year.
An international trip to Costa Rica gave me 207 species in 9 days of birdwatching.
The numbers are up, and right now (26 Feb 2022) I have seen/heard 283 species of birds.  Costa Rica is up with 207, and USA is at 83.
And the end of March I will be on a plane southbound to Costa Rica.  Hoping to add more species to the Y22L.
Enjoy the pictures!!  More to come soon!!

MY FIRST SIGHTING OF YELLOW-WINGED
TANAGER FOR COSTA RICA ON THE XXI CENTURY
During my last visit to Costa Rica, I visited several localities, most of them on the Alajuela Province.
On 08 Feb 2022 I did a loop from Grecia to Bajos de Toro Amarillo, then to Colonia Río Cuarto. From here to Cariblanco, a short visit to Virgen del Socorro, and a last at Cinchona.
In this last place, we saw several species of birds.  Among them, a single individual of the Yellow-winged Tanager, Thraupis abbas.
This species has been reported during the XXI Century since 2009. But there an old record from 1985 (article published in BRENESIA).  This record has the category of NON-OFFICIAL.
Enjoy the pictures more to come!!!

THE YEAR 2022 AND THE BIRDS!!
Another year just started.  And as usual, I started my Year List on the Eastern most point of the state of NY: Montauk.
We spent the first 2 days there. Added almost 50 sps of birds.  From Montauk to Brooklyn.
In this last place I visited Prospect Park & Green-Wood Cemetery.
And more recently, a short and quick visit to Jones Beach SP & Point Lookout, in Nassau Co.
As the month of January rolls in, I have almost tallied 70+ sps of birds for the current year.
BROOKLYN IS GREAT BIRDING!!!
