She listened. She didn't know a lot of human speech, but she knew enough to start piecing things together. He was in distress. He was now crying. He was saying sorry, but he hadn't done anything to her. Tidal curled up in the nest with him.
Tidal gave a soft rumble. He'd... Hurt someone. But it sounded like an accident. It sounded like he was defending himself. That was all she understood. It was all she needed to understand. Now she needed to help Drake.
The gentle giant lapped the blood from his hands, cleaning them off. The dragon gently pressed her nose against him. Sighing deeply. And purring deep. The sound reverberated. It could be felt as well as heard. Tidal was aiming to comfort him. "Drake okay. Drake good. Friend." she assured him.
Why was he apologizing? He hadn't done anything wrong? She was careful to keep her gait smooth and steady. She didn't want him to fall over. Tidal reached her den in a matter of minutes. A large cave, alongside a great lake. She ducked inside, and tenderly deposited Drake on solid ground.
She warbled softly, tilting her head. Tidal reached over with a hand, and carefully patted his head with a single finger. The gentle giant laid flat out on her belly. Something wasn't right with Drake. And she was determined to figure it out!

What many would've described as absolute horror to be in the jaws of a titan-like dragon, Drake feared not. His best... and well... only friend wouldn't hurt him. He knows it. Drake might have been too trusting. People would've seen dragons and ran the other way. Tales of people being burnt to a crisp or swallowed whole as horrible ends as they were. Drake cared for Tidal in a way that none could've matched. Drake believed the same way for Tidal too.
His body sits comfortably on her tongue; his small hands wrapped around her singular sharp dagger-like tooth to stabilize himself. Adrenaline pushing down his throat until he's nothing left but jitters in his arms and legs. Heart pumping more blood and fear into him. He couldn't believe what he just did. It wasn't like him at all. He was scared, wasn't he? It was just self defense. Drake's wet with blurred tears that wanted to fall.
"I-I'm sorry fo-for draggin' you into m'mess, Tidal." Drake stammered a breath, trying to compose himself enough to speak without crying. Drake could feel the humid air push through the jets between her teeth. He couldn't see much, but Drake loved how freeing and open the forest is. If Drake could run away from it all and live like a wild child. He would. In fact, Drake believed that would've been the better option instead of living somewhere that hated him.

Tidal realized something was wrong fairly quickly. He was distressed. She didn't understand a chunk of what he said, but she caught "bad", and "don't want to go back". Tidal made a soft, worried noise. Then it seemed like he was about to cry.
She gave a soft, gentle growl. Tidal reached a hand down, and carefully picked him up. From there, she put him in her parted jaws, much like a mother alligator with her hatchlings. And with that, she began heading back towards her den. Tidal took great care not to accidentally bite her little passenger as she pushed through the forest.
(tidewings-of-hyrule, or tidewingsofhyrule I don't know lmao)
"Drrrake!"
Tidal remembered this little one! She bounded over, flopping onto her side and purring loudly. Tidal gave her horns a friendly wiggle for good measure.
"Tidal! Y-You're here!" Drake breaths seemingly in relief that she's still in the vicinity of the forest. In all honesty, it's a good thing too. Because Drake had just came to their special spot looking like he ran a marathon. Sweat beaded at the sides of his head. His chest rising and falling with an intensity that made it look like that Drake had been running for a long time. It's nearly dusk outside. The warm, orange skies filtered out the sunlight mixing the colors together. Drake knows it's going to be night time soon, but Drake didn't have anywhere else to go knowing full well trouble would land him back in the orphanage.
"Thanks goodness. I-I... I did somethin' really bad, Tidal, an-an' I don' wanna go back. Do... do y'have a home in th'forest? Like a cave r'nest r'somethin'?" Drake would explain in a moment, but for now he needed to just feel as though that the staff wouldn't try to look for him here. Not like they tried before, but Drake wasn't about to risk it and get nabbed. Drake sniffles a breath, as if emotions had been high for Drake.

She purred when he pressed his cheek into her nose. Tidal wiggled her nose playfully against his cheek in return. The gentle giant looked to where he was pointing. Her ears pricked forwards as she saw the fish swimming about. She carefully set him on the ground, and leaned down to get a better look.
"Ishies?" she asked. Trying to copy what he'd said.

Tidal remembered Drake from before, and happily trotted over to the child. Horns wiggling in absolute delight. "Eyo!" she greeted him. The giant dragon carefully scooped him up in her palms so she could poke him with her nose.

Reblog to let your mutuals know. . .
that they are appreciated. that they are important. that they are amazing. that they are creative. that they are loved.
No matter how long you take to reply, what mood you are in, how insecure you are feeling about your writing, or how active you are — your presence is still very much enjoyed. You never have to apologize or feel bad for taking a while with a reply, or not answering an ask right away. Life can get busy, energy can fluctuate, interest can shift, and emotions can change. You are human and these things do not make you a bad person/partner.
We write together because it is fun and enjoyable, not because it is expected of you to answer every little thing at the snap of fingers.

Tidal tilted her head at him, listening as he gave her his name. Drake. The Tidewing watched his lips closely as he repeated his name twice more. The dragon licked her lips and took a breath.
"Drrrr... Draaaaaake. Drrake. Drake~" Tidal liked that name. He gave another name too. He only said it once, though. She tried anyway. "Connnnay...?" Tidal laid down next to him, loafing like a giant cat. She pricked her ears towards him as he went on. Yes, she knew she was a dragon. The People who named her hundreds of years ago taught her that.
Drake mentioned fire. Did he want a fire? She knew how to make a little one! Tidal lifted one hand, and dug a shallow hole in the ground. She brushed dead leaves into it, and gave a tiny, tiny puff of flame. Just enough to start a small fire. Very small. Her big sapphire eyes looked back at him, and she smiled.
Tidal cooed when he laughed. It was a sweet sound! She tilted her head when he offered her more food. She knew some words. Some. The boy said "last". Did he not have anymore? She didn't want him to go hungry! Tidal brushed her nose against his side, paying the toast no mind. The child was her main interest.
"Ti... dal..." She gave her name. She said it slowly. Tidal made a questioning sound, and gingerly prodded his chest with a finger. Her head tilting to one side. Tidal understood the concept of names. She also knew that people who wanted to be friends shared names. Would this little one understand what she was asking?

Tidal tilted her head as he spoke. His dialect intrigued her. She understood some of it. She snuffled at the toast as he held it up. The little boy seemed to want her to eat it.
The dragon was VERY gentle taking the toast. She licked it from his hand, taking great care not to nip him at all. Her whiskers twitched at the sweet yet savory taste. Her eyes growing round. This was such a kind child! She thanked him with a gentle nuzzle, purring hard.

The fact he didn't take off running delighted her. Her eyes grew round, and smiled back. Smiles were good! Smiles meant happy! Tidal shuffled closer. She knew her size could be scary. Thirty feet tall at her shoulder, she knew she towered over humans. But she meant no harm. Tidal started purring. Then he pulled something out of his pocket. Her nose wiggled as she sniffed at the air. Whatever it was, it smelled sweet~
Tidal shuffled even closer, staying on her belly. Her tail swished behind her much like a dog wagging its tail. She gave a soft little cheep.

Tidal froze when she spotted the little boy. The giant dragon approached carefully, not wanting to scare him. She twitched her whiskers as she got closer. The Tidewing got down on her belly and did her best to look approachable and friendly.
