Note
maybe a silly question but do the nuns at linbarrow ever do formal confession or is it just impractical due to how rarely the Bishop is actually there? I'm assuming since the Bishop is the only one administering the Eucharist that he's the only one who could take confession as well.
This'll come up more directly in Volume Three probably, but yeah, that would be his job formally. Whether or not any of the Linbarrow sisters would bother to tell him anything, well, that's a different story--but that is a role he would play. Confession is complicated as the stuff in popular imagination (confession booths, forgive me father for I have sinned etc etc) is from about 100 years after Misericorde is set, and the scholarship I've found about women and confession in the middle ages paints a very complex picture. It was one of those things where I had to step back and go okay, if I go too far down this rabbit hole, it'll take over the story. I'll get into it more in the third volume for sure!
