I love sparkles, starbucks and cutesy stuff, but I also love leather jackets and rock'n'roll you know?

"Not all men"
You're right, Anthony Bourdain would never have done this to me.

I have a post that minorly blew up about how bridgerton is so fun and it's unfortunately spiraled a bit out of my grasp because now people keep adding tags that are like "bridgerton sucks but it's fun" and "it's fun enough to make me forget the awful costumes" and noooooo that's not what I meanttt y'all don't get it I think it's unironically excellent television because it doesn't take itself too seriously despite being dead serious in its content and earnestness. the orchestral covers of modern songs, the costumes that aren't in quite the right silhouettes or fabrics or styles for the time, the crazy wigs... they are part of what makes the show so good. it's part of how the show works so hard to bridge the gap between a regency setting and modernity - it's an idealized and changed society to mirror today's dynamics while sprinkling in customs from back then that we like to read about and watch. the setting in the regency period is an excuse to indulge in austen-esque dynamics and lavish gowns rather than a hard setting to be respected.
and unironically I think that is part of what makes the show good! it's an essential piece of the watching experience! this could not have been made at any other point than in the 2020s. it's a period piece as a time capsule for the 2020s just as much as it is a period piece because it starts in fictionalized 1813. like sure I wish they'd been a bit less heavyhanded on the makeup in season 3 but honestly? bring on the acrylics I don't care. this is not actually the 1810s. there's reminders at every corner that it isn't.
because at what point did you think that a family in which all 8 siblings marry for love was realistic for the 1810s anyway.

I'm beginning to think we lost so much more than we realised when Anthony Bourdain died. Not only was he a genuine traveller and willing to throw himself into the world and experience all it has to offer. But I swear there's not a single billionaire who would have dared get so uppity while his big dick energy was still hanging around, not so silently judging them and forcing them to recognise that cool cannot be bought
