Discussing spoilers!
Yup! The gates did already exist, but I think initially (because I started with the show & read one and a half books + parts of the fandom wiki I thought I'd maybe encounter before writing Unbearable) I interpreted it as where the other gates were, their local practices had some sort of control over it?
Maybe an influx of energy + the fencing off those portals that probably let ghosts move on more naturally made it impact other gates too? Ghosts just getting out where they could?? Idk probably remembering that wrong too....I imagine for people who had already encountered ghosts it'd be like seeing an alien and never being believed and then waking up one day and suddenly half of Western Europe's been beamed to Mars.
To clarify; I think what I got from it was that everywhere had a link to the supernatural but the Problem specifically was in England alone, probably because (as you said) of Fittes & Rotwell's meddling with the Other Side in Kent, but for some reason I assumed that the Problem wouldn't spread because other cultures had already been encountering and interacting with the Other Side to enough of an extent that the origins of their practices weren't clear.
I hadn't remembered the running water part until I read this post which, maybe it's because I live on an island it partly influenced me to be like. Oh, well yeah. How is someone going to get across all that water, let alone a ghost? But then it literally takes less time (both by train) for someone to go from England to France than it does for me to go to uni LMAOO maybe the rest of the world would be safe if it weren't for the English channel.
Which. This is off topic but imagine the tabloids?? Soo many people coming out of the woodwork like I have proof of a ghost from the BEFORE TIMES.
Anyway, all that to say yes the gates existed long beforehand and that I agree about it being less of a "holy shit ghosts are real now" and more of a "THEY'RE REAL AND THERE ARE SO MANY OF THEM" situation.
Doing research (and rewatching the show) about the world of Lockwood & Co. not only do I have no clue where I got the idea that it was only in the UK???
#ti talkies#feels so weird to put things in the actual text post to reply to something but I figure you can actually keep a spoiler a spoiler this way

Watching Lockwood & Co is just thinking “Why’d they cancel this” every two minutes
#literally going through this as we speak#especially sorry to Cameron Chapman. First job and it's a zinger. AND THEN IT GETS CANCELLED?? I'd riot#Surprised no one else picked it up too? perhaps Netflix did some horrible exclusivity thing.#anyway. the books are very very good too! if a bit saddening with how self-deprecating Lucy is

#Like it definitely started there but#who knows how long it took to spread...#oh well. disregard my earlier comments#maybe I just got caught up with the idea of how funny it would be to have one small island terrorised by ghosts#and the rest of the world is like ?#similar to that madmax Australia meme#anyway.#lockwood and co#ti talkies#Unbearable fic 2 should be coming soon! and an updated (+ fourth chapter) of moon child also#sorry to all who have waited !#like I'M ACTIVELY typing it and getting beta'd as you read this I bet.........#my word comes honestly but not swiftly

Y'all I am so sorry for neglecting this fandom . Fixations rush at me Hard and Fast... Unbreakable Part 2 (title is a work in progress) might be 2 chapters might be 1. Aiming for 1 because that means I get to post it sooner. Anyway, not tagging this under Lockwood n co, just George x Reader, but this is a little re-up for anyone who still wants to get pinged when I post Pt. 2!
A snippet for your troubles >_>

“What was Arif asking you about?”
“Hm? Oh, us.” You answered.
“Us?”
You hummed, “Yeah. Wanted to see if we were a thing yet or not.”
George chuckled. “Never let anyone say that man is not a gossip.”
“He’s curious!” You laughed. “I happen to like that about him. Even if he does like to stick his nose in things. Maybe it reminds me of someone.”
“Oh it does, does it?”
“Well, only maybe.”
“Should I be worried?”
“Yes.” You deadpanned. “Arif, the balding middle aged man who runs the corner store and smells like burnt coffee, is going to steal me away from you.”
“I knew it.”

Thoughts about Buffy season 6:
Not actually as bad as I remember.
I actually really liked the whole "being expelled from Heaven" concept
Sorry, but the attempted rape in "Seeing Red" is actually entirely in keeping with Spike's character.
And so, actually, is him going off to get his soul back. He's a predator who remembers being a romantic. The contradiction is what drives him mad.
The only characters I actually felt were ill-used here were Giles and Xander. I don't believe that either of them would have done what the plot mandated.
The magic addiction thing was a bit forced.
The Trio seem, in retrospect, like a surprisingly prescient forecast of what has become of nerd culture and Silicon Valley in the decades since.
(Also of Joss Whedon himself. Zero points for correctly diagnosing what's wrong with himself and then refusing to do anything about it)
I Saw the TV Glow (2024) is the best thing to come out of this season
#this this this#a vampire is a DEMON thats informed of their body's previous self#seeing red is in character bc spike has ALWAYS been ruled by emotion. He fuckin hunts slayers for fun#he (as a demon) has no idea how to interpret positive feelings in conjunction with rejection. and having to ACCEPT the rejection.#volatile is a Safe Way to put it#Seeing Red to me is like#the demon misinterpreting/trying to give a compromise. well we cant kill her because we like her. so instead we'll just take what we want#I think the going off to search for a soul is in character too. spike is so used to contradicting himself#that its almost like he does inventory with himself and his human memories after and is like. Oh. oh fuck that was all wrong.#idk that doesnt explain it very well but. thats my take

What to do if You Don’t Like an Author’s Fanfic or Take on a Trope:
Stop reading.
Find another fanfic that is more suitable to your tastes.
Read that one instead.
Bonus tip If you’re considering sending the author unsolicited messages about how much you disliked their fic, consider one of the following options instead:
Don’t.
Get a life.

how am i supposed to be normal when angel and spike are made from all the same things. pain inflicted by their family. the same demonic spirit, passed down through generations. love for the same woman. jealousy toward one another. human souls that are both a burden and a blessing. etc

spike’s changing perception of love and his actions surrounding how to show it is such an interesting concept…
as a human, spike, or william, was never shown love in a true way. he loved his mother, and he took care of her. he showed love to a girl in his town, and he was made fun of and shut down. he was a bit pathetic (and i don’t mean this as an insult, it’s just one of the only words to describe what i’m trying to convey). when he becomes a vampire, he turns his mother in an act of love to cure her sickness (as another post has mentioned before), but she becomes cruel, and in another act of love, he kills her. he ultimately ends the life of the one person he cared about completely as a human.
then there is the power dynamic between drusilla and spike, as i think there always is between the sire and the sired. she knows more about the world and changes him to be like her. despite her mental state, she has the upper hand about what they are and how they should act. that isn’t to say that they don’t truly love each other; it just presents another obstacle.
i am a spuffy shipper all the way, but I do love dru and spike’s relationship as well. however, it is built on obsession and violence. spike’s birth as a vampire is due to his death as a human by dru’s hands (or fangs lol). they do grand acts of violence for each other. they are aggressive and passionate with one another. they love each other (this can be seen not just through their actions but through the episode with the judge when he says he can sense love and jealousy in both dru and spike). but this love is not built on things that we associate love with. it is built on violence, sex, passion, but also a strong sense of loyalty.
when spike realizes he loves buffy, he is taking his own perception of love that he has developed throughout his life. from what we’ve seen, he does not have experience as a human, so most of his definition is being taken from his time as a vampire. we see this deep caring he has for buffy, but he has no way to convey it properly. he kidnaps her and threatens to kill dru to prove his devotion to her, by killing the person he loved first.
however, he sees the fault in his ways. he’s fiercely loyal to her by the fifth season. he’s willing to sacrifice himself for dawn; he’s willing to put his life on the line in a way he hasn’t for anyone before. he counts the days buffy is dead and continues to fight with her friends. he helps her fight her way out of her depression.
he tells her that she belongs in the darkness with him because he truly thinks that. what friend was really trying to help her after they resurrected her? do i agree with him? no, but also what image of healthy love does he have to look back on? none.
(i do not take into account the actions of “seeing red”. in all honesty, i act like they didn’t happen because of the reasons behind it being petty and cruel *cough cough joss* and sending james to therapy etc etc etc, just a disclaimer)
so spike gradually learns how to love. properly. he gets his soul back to prove he can be the type of man she could love. to be worthy. and that is something so beautiful. he didn’t force buffy to show him how to love. he did it himself. for her. he learned how to love with and without his soul. he made the decision to get his soul back when he still didn’t have one.
his character is so interesting to me because he is a goofy guy but he’s also deep and deeply flawed. i have a lot of thoughts obviously but this explains some.
#something about the demon in Spike being so informed by his love for his mother that it's first like True vampiric act#like blood drinking aside because it's not exclusive to vampires in the way how siring is#but it's/his first vampiric act is born out of LOVE. he is trying to HEAL his mother#something about that is so... heartbreaking? his demonic act was to help#it backfired immediately... because his mother's demon interpreted her love for him differently#but still#does this make any sense at all? he was healing her. It's literally antithetical to what a demon is#idk#having Thoughts

Honestly buffy is so fucking funny like here is boyfriend number 1. He is a centuries old vampire plagued with catholic guilt who becomes an unhinged killer if he has sex. This is my boyfriend number 3. He is also a centuries old vampire who got tests and experiments done on him and he's in love with me. What about boyfriend number 2 you ask? Well he was from Iowa.
#to be fair to buffy. iowa did work for the tests experiments club#1. catholic (real). 2. captain america if he was american. no im not explaining that further.#3. well you see. my mum clubbed him with an axe and he got heart eyes. no i dont... i dont know what to do with that either.#hes got an NFT card in his brain though so if you need an amiibo he'll think it hard and we'll tap it on his coconut#dw its worked before
