Just another person who likes anime and video games. I'm shy so don't be offended if I don't feel like answering asks or messages... LIKES TO TALK ABOUT ABOUT: umineko, higurashi, elder scrolls, baldur's gate 3, clair obscur, dbz, other anime sometimes maybe if I start watching any again Don't look at my old posts there's cringe in there

I know a lot of people don't like how many notes you can find even in the unlikeliest situations in Skyrim for the express purpose of explaining to you, the player, what happened in a place, and I agree to some extent, but I think Morrowind is too far in the opposite direction. I don't really judge it considering its age and how much commitment to the lore and storytelling is put in other places, but dungeon crawls do often feel a little random as a result. WHY are there a bunch of orcs in this random dwemer ruin? Who knows! Just kill em and take their stuff.
Idk, there's times I feel like there's a story waiting to be told but isn't. And maybe it's just my modern gaming expectations showing. Maybe I'm meant to use my imagination and create my own explanation for stuff like that. A lot of people might prefer that. But I think there's a good balance to be had somewhere between Morrowind and Skyrim, and I gotta say this is one area where I think Skyrim wins out.
#morrowind#tes3#elder scrolls#path of the incarnate#tiger plays video games#skyrim actually does a pretty solid job with environmental storytelling in places tbf and sometimes even the note system works well#pinewatch is always a favorite of mine with the bandits trying to double cross the leader and her correspondence with her dad and all that#morrowind definitely favors its lore being told through lore books and npc conversations and the environment is better at conveying a VIBE#daedric ruins? peak vibes. sixth house bases? peakest vibes. dwemer ruins...? hot take I gotta give this one to skyrim too#I kinda prefer morrowind's exterior dwemer aesthetic but the inside tileset and map layouts are actually super dull...#this is DWEMER COUNTRY! I guess I was just expecting them to be a lot cooler#I even waited perhaps way too long to go into any because I fucking hate fighting constructs in skyrim and thought they would kill me here#but they're actually pretty weak and also really goofy looking...I'm a little let down tbh...#centurions just being like...the same size as my character especially makes them feel very nonthreatening#daedric ruins have so far been my favorite dungeon “type” in this game especially with the MUSE music closely followed by sixth house#if I had to rank each game's unique local dungeon type then it's daedric > nordic > ayleid#I really wish I could rank ayleid above nordic but the dungeon LAYOUTS in oblivion are just complete ass and ayleid dungeons feel SO samey#no amount of aesthetic and lore can make up for the slog that was collecting all those damn statues or whatever for that dude#a lot of skyrim crypts actually have really good level design I think people just shit on the “easy” claw door and pillar puzzles too much#but in terms of general aesthetic and vibe I get extreeeemely bored of nordic tombs so morrowind has them beat in vibes if not in layouts#even ancestral tombs feel a little more visually interesting to me than nordic crypts idk why. the tombs are also pretty samey#worst dungeon type in morrowind? if you don't count kwama mines then it's bandit caves#just some linear halls with fairly weak (often unarmored) bandits and a slave pen at the end#bandit dens are prob my second fave after dwemer ruins in skyrim I can easily name 10+ locations I always love going to on any playthrough#TLDR...I think dungeon crawling in morrowind and oblivion is kinda boring and skyrim for all the flak it gets has better ones. i said it#morrowind has a lot of strengths I just do not think this is one of them#thanks for coming to my TES talk

Playing Morrowind for the first time as someone who has known all about the story and the Deep Lore and whatnot for years has been like...okay, it's nice seeing all this stuff presented in its original context, and the mods even out the jank JUST enough that I can tolerate it, but a lot of the time I'm still fighting against myself as the person Playing Old Video Game, someone who isn't coming into any of this story with SURPRISE and AWE, enjoying myself well enough but not really feeling the deep levels of immersion that people who played this game growing up talk so fondly of.
But man, something about the Sheogorad region is really making me feel it. Clawing my way all the way out here from Maar Gan (there might be closer civilization I could have used as a hub/starting point but idk I studied the lore of Morrowind for years not its map). Water walking. Dealing with the ABUNDANCE of hostile wildlife in the northern part of Vvardenfell compared to the much tamer and quieter south. Water walking my way across the islands, trying to find any landmarks to ground myself and find my way. There's something ancient and mysterious out here that really makes me feel like "damn...I'm in Morrowind".

I love how that final conflict in Clair Obscur mirrors Renoir and Aline's conflict in the canvas.
Verso and Renoir want to destroy the canvas, Maelle and Aline want to keep using it as escape from their grief.
At the end of the story, the conflict between Renoir and Aline that threatened the world seems resolved. Aline is out of the canvas, and Renoir agrees to leave the Canvas intact to respect Maelles wishes. If the story ended at that point, I would say it ends on a hopeful note for both the people of Lumiere and the family.
But then there's Maelle and Verso. Both of them are trying to escape a life they don't want, and both of them are trying to save each other.
But at their worst, they become just like their parents. Verso, convinced he knows what's best for his family, willing to erase an entire world to save them. Maelle, drowning herself in her grief, repainting the family she's lost (Gustave and the others), unwilling to let Verso go, unable to move on.
Like father, like son. Like mother, like daughter. They cannot break the cycle.

morrowind is special because its lore and premise are in no way calculated, accessible, or marketable. it’s a game about stumbling around in the dark through a world that is utterly baffling and hostile. it is the work of unchecked occult nerds who spent half a decade working on a text-based game about dark elves aimed at nobody in particular. it’s ugly and misguided and boring in ways that wouldn’t be allowed to happen now. it’s irreplaceable

Playing the Skyrim mod for Morrowind and it's jarring to see normal creatures and objects after living in The Bug And Ash land for five in game years.
I passed by a squirrel and an apple tree and was disgusted.

Not trying to victim blame or anything but you’d think with all the times necromancers have tried/succeeded in raising undead armies the people of Tamriel would’ve stopped burying their dead fully armed and equipped for battle.
Like, I know your great grandpa’s sword was A Part Of Him and all but maybe you could bury SuperDeathblade somewhere not right next to SuperDeathbladeMan. Just in case.

daggerfall: there is no chosen one. you’re an imperial agent jackass who happens to fulfill the role of hero by virtue of sticking to it long enough and causing enough problems that you fuck up walk-brass and now we’re down an entire tower. good job asshole.
morrowind: you literally aren’t the chosen one. your mythopoetic pattern resembles the prophecy, and if you work hard at accomplishing the prophecy, you can retroactively become the nerevarine by virtue of fulfilling its duties, thereby consuming nerevar’s identity via narrative continuity. if you want to look at it like that, at least. also you deactivated another tower, good job asshole.
oblivion: the other assholes deactivated all the towers and now shit’s falling apart. you aren’t the chosen one. martin is. you can follow him around and he does stuff and beats the game for you. you fight level-scaled daedra and that’s neat i guess.
skyrim: you’re the chosen one. no, we aren’t going to explain why. fuck you. you’re special you bought the game you’re so important and cool. look at how cool you are. do you feel special enough? how can i make you feel more special please? also dragons are no longer six-limbed and they no longer worked with the empire, instead we decided they used to rule the entire world yes hush i know we didn’t say anything about that until this game but shut up also alduin is no longer akatosh. fuck you.
todd howard, emil pagliario, if we ever meet in person, i literally challenge you to a duel to the death you are the death of modern fantasy games as a genre i will actually FIGHT YOU to the death this isn’t hyperbole or tumblr grandstanding let’s get some SWORDS and let’s go until one of us is DEAD
