Huang Xiao, Qiao Zhi, Lu Wenbo - Street dance of China (Season 3, ep.10)
Barely anyone is uploading any Street dance of China content (that is related to the dancers and not the captains!!!) so i guess it’s my job now
For those who haven’t watched the show : it’s a fusion of Korean ethnic dance and street dance. At the end when Huang Xiao and Qiao Zhi come out from behind the others it means that the whole dance was their imagination ^^
I loved this one, the only thing was that Korean traditional clothing is very big and flowy so it hid their body lines a little bit, especially on the lifts. But who cares. Kudos to Qiao Zhi for doing choreographed dance that verges towards urban/contemporary even though he’s a battle-style bboy!

If you die, what's the point in living anymore?
Tumblr media
你若不在了*,千山暮雪,我孤翼只影向谁去呀?**
YT: If you leave, alone in this wilderness, who should I go to? (episode 6, before they fight and a-xu removes his mask)
WKX adapted and quoted from one of the more famous poems around, 《摸鱼儿·雁丘词》.
The poem talks about meeting a hunter who caught a wild goose and killed it. The other goose that got away cried pitifully non-stop and refused to leave. In the end, it killed itself by hitting the ground. And so I (the poet) bought the pair of geese from the hunter and buried them by the river.
With regret and hate, I ask the world: what is love? That can make two people (birds) follow each other in life and death……. The lonely goose should ask, "Even if I fly across thousands of miles of clouds and cold mountains, I’m only a single shadow; what’s the point in living anymore?
Lao Wen uses part of the goose’s lament in his confession to Zhou Zishu. If we put WKX’s lines together, he said —If you die, what’s the point in living anymore?
My interpretation of this scene is a tad depressing. At this time, WKX isn’t yet sure of ZZS’s identity, so when he confesses, it is a joke. But if A-Xu were the ZZS from WKX’s memory, his confession would’ve been partly real.
*It can mean leaving like YT says, but in this context, it’s referring to A-Xu dying of the injuries that he refuses to let WKX see (also known as one goose dies, why should the other goose live?).
**The bolded words are from the famous poem《摸鱼儿·雁丘词》, “千山暮雪,只影向谁去?” This poem also happens to be one that Cao Weining mixed up in the novel (chapter 24); he messes up the poem’s more famous line (what is love?). Also, I skipped translating parts of the poem that aren’t relevant to the meaning here.

Beyond disappointing Zishi, I think the deaths of the four sages scared Wen Ke Xing because he DID feel remorse and guilt.
He had to survive up to this point in Ghost Valley by being brutal and cruel and inhuman. So to feel emotions like that, to feel the weight of what he did, probably scared him because it made him feel too human, too soft.
It's why he so pointedly reminded the other ghosts that they'd kill him if they could. Why he reminded Xiang that she, too, is not human. It's why he said he "couldn't afford to have it [the thing he lost, that came back to him] anymore." He can't afford feeling human or being soft anymore, not as the leader of Ghost Valley.
Being soft or remorseful means death to him, because that's what he's known. And I think it scared him that he found himself slipping.
So how does he navigate out of that, in order to be someone who can be soulmates with Zishi?

i’m not cultured enough for word of honor *flails*
Tumblr media
Zhou Zishu’s painting of the flowers on his wall mural is super meaningful.
Not only were there 82 white flowers on this wall mural, as we watch ZZS paint the 81st one red, symbolizing that all 81 of his sect members have died, and he’s the only one left. But it also has origins from this quote: “日冬至,画素梅一枝,为瓣八十有一,日染一瓣,瓣尽而九九出,则春深矣,曰‘九九消寒图’”.
This is from a Ming dynasty historical record* on the gardens, temples, scenery of capital city. It roughly translates to: On winter’s solstice**, I’ll paint a plum blossom on a branch with nine-nine petals***. I’ll colour one petal each day and  be done when eighty one days are over. By then, it’ll be deep into Spring. This painting is called ‘Getting rid of the winter chill in nine-nine days’.”
In pinyin, it’s jiu jiu xiao han, where the middle two characters are homophones for Qin Jiuxiao’s name.
*《帝京景物略》 and it’s Beijing, if anyone was wondering  ** Generally around 21-23 December each year, it’s one of the more important events to celebrate for the Chinese *** 9x9=81. It’s a more romantic way to say 81, I’m leaving it as nine-nine because the pinyin here matters. Nine is jiu. Also, I’m not trying to make the translation sound beautiful cause I’m lazy

《山河令》 Word of Honour (2021) ⌘ Episode 19
龙伯伯,您为了朋友,不惜做到如此,义气之深重便是比先贤左羊之交 [1] 亦不遑多让。人生一世,得友如此,九泉之下,亦可欣然。
Uncle Long, you did not hesitate to go to such lengths for your friend, the depth of your loyalty can even be compared to the friendship between the historical virtuous men Zuo Botao and Yang Jiaoai [1]. If one were to have a friend like that in one’s entire life, even in death, one would be filled with joy.
[1] Zuo Botao 左伯桃 and Yang Jiaoai 羊角哀 were a pair of good friends from Yan during the Warring States Period of China (247-221 BC). Hearing of the wisdom and capability of the King of Chu, they decided to go to Chu together to serve in the court. However, on the way to Chu, they met with heavy snow and were close to dying from the cold and hunger as they lacked clothing and food. Aware that his knowledge and skills were not as good as those of Yang Jiaoai, Zuo Botao gave his clothing and food to Yang Jiaoai, letting Yang Jiaoai continue on his way, while he himself died from the cold and hunger in a hole in a tree. Yang Jiaoai eventually went on to serve in the court in Chu. Later, he went back to find the place where Zuo Botao died, cut down the tree, and retrieved Zuo Botao’s body, and gave him an elaborate funeral. Yang Jiaoai said extremely sorrowfully, “The reason my friend died like this was because he was worried that if the both of us were to die, no one on this earth would know of our names. Now, what’s the point of me continuing to live?” And so, Yang Jiaoai also ended his own life. [translated from baidu]

Ghost Valley is not for evil people
I had a lot of thoughts about episode 10 and wanted to share them. I have seen episodes 11-18 on Youku, but I don’t know Mandarin, so I was mostly admiring pretty people, lol. I also haven’t read the novel.
I’m fascinated by Ghost Valley because of the possibilities it brings to lost, fractured people. There are a lot of villains at Ghost Valley- there’s an abuser, a cannibal, and a man that likes to carve up his victim’s faces.
Tumblr media
During this scene with Wen Kexing and his subordinates, my attention was taken by Tragicomic Ghost and her quietly defiant, prideful stance. And a question struck me- what does Ghost Valley represent for women?
Tumblr media
During this time period, and in many parts of the world today, there aren’t shelters or centers or places where a woman in distress could go to and get help. If her father, her clan, or her husband wasn’t strong enough, or willing, to help her, then she had no place. What would happen to women who were abused, pushed out, mentally ill, or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time? A good number of them end up on the streets, facing more abuse and mistreatment. Some might end up in a place like Ghost Valley because there are no other options.
Tragicomic Ghost punishes the unfaithful because the women suffer the most at the hands of their faithless lovers. It’s probably what happened to her before she came to Ghost Valley.
Gu Xiang shows that she lacks experience in the world but is an excellent killer (implied) and fighter. She doesn’t act like other girls, doesn’t know how, as Wen Kexing repeatedly reminds her and the viewers, so that leads us to wonder about her background as well. Where did she come from that she ended up in Ghost Valley? What abuse did she undergo as a child?
Tumblr media
I don’t know much about the following ghost, a subordinate of Tragicomic Ghost, but she seems to have a similarly dark past. I believe her name is Gorgeous Ghost.
Tumblr media
A few episodes ago (episode 4), A-Xiang reprimands Lovelace Ghost for stealing women.. again. She says that Aunt Luo asked him not to do that and would physically hurt him if she heard of him kidnapping girls. I’m not exactly sure which one is Aunt Luo at this point, but it’s either Tragicomic Ghost or Gorgeous Ghost. I’m betting Tragicomic Ghost.
Tumblr media
This means that the women at Ghost Valley are protecting and looking out for each other. Tragicomic Ghost seems to be acting as type of second-in-command or working with Wen Kexing in order to protect the women in Ghost Valley. It could explain why he’s so lenient with her because he knows that he needs her to look out for their most vulnerable population, the women.
The two girls that A-Xiang rescues are perfect examples of how rejected women fare in society: they’re seen as property and playthings. In their own words, they were sold around like “puppies” their whole lives. In Ghost Valley, they have a job and a purpose that is beyond servicing others with their bodies or looks. They show this new agency over their lives when they make the decision to fight for the chance to stay in Ghost Valley with A-Xiang.
Tumblr media
Yes, Ghost Valley is a home for criminals and evil people, but it’s also a home for the lost, the disenfranchised, and the unlucky souls who find their place in society lost for reasons out of their control. It’s a place where a woman can have power and control over her own life. Wen Kexing is not just the Ghost Master, he’s providing a haven for desperate women in need. Crazy, huh?

My theory for why the turtle (Yizhan fan/BXG) color is YELLOW 💛
The first time i saw the color yellow being used for turtles was I think during the 11.11 event last year.
In this event, XiaoZhan and Yibo shared the same stage. Although there were also other stars performing, the audience was filled with countless green and red signs dedicated to XiaoZhan and Yibo. However, among the sea of red and green, in the middle was the brightest sign of all.
It was a bright yellow sign, standing out from the others because of its color, that said "Zhan-ge didi ai ni!"
In order for it to be better noticed, the color yellow was used, and certainly it did catch their attention. For one, this is the sign that went viral because XiaoZhan looked at it and smiled. Many pictures of his performance staring at that sign were shared, and even solos tried to pretend the sign never existed.
THUS the color yellow became more used by the turtles to differentiate themselves from the green and red.
Tumblr media
Yes, this is something I purely theorized. I might be wrong though-- do you guys have your own theories as to why our color is yellow?

Disney Land Fairy Tale (Yizhan AU)
YIZHAN AU (inspired by the song: Mad at Disney)
Yibo was once a happy-go-lucky person, however, life was never kind to those with pure hearts. Love wasn't like a fairy tale, be it platonic or romantic.  So, how did he end up working at Disney Land?
Yibo huffed as he finished stacking different props in the storage room. He had his own concept of a fairy tale.
Little Mermaid was about a silly mermaid who tried to covet another woman's man.
Beauty and the Beast was about a kidnapper and his victim.
Snow White was about a man who fell in love with a corpse.
Romantic fairy tale? No. Love didn't exist... not even in stories.
Yibo walked out of the storage room only to bump into another person.
"Ah! I'm sorry!" said a bubbly voice.
The first thing that Yibo noticed was this man was a crazy Disney fanatic. He wore the mickey mouse headband, an obnoxious tee filled with all the disney princes, and in his hand a candy apple.
The next thing Yibo noticed was the mole under his lips as he gave a smile.
This man, XiaoZhan, came to Disney Land too many times to count. It came to the point where they've become acquaintances.
"Yibo, why do you hate Fairy Tales?"
"They're all sugar coated lies."
"That's not true."
Yibo frowned towards XiaoZhan's direction. XiaoZhan smiled.
"Beauty and The Beast--"
"Is just stockholm syndrome."
"--Is about someone who changed themselves into a person they became proud of after finding someone who loved them no matter what."
Yibo gaped at the older man who laughed and ruffled his hair.
"Now, what evil witch has you trapped in their tower?" XiaoZhan asked.
For Yibo, the world had been gray for so long, but at this moment, when the wind passed by XiaoZhan's hair and the sun landed on his handsome features...
Yibo felt magic swirl in his chest.

So I found this manhwa called "The Best Smell" and I thought an AU for GGDD would be so good.
Like, imagine...
XiaoZhan is someone who was born with a heightened sense of smell. At first, it was only simple things like being able to tell what his mother made for dinner or knowing if someone else was inside the house. However, it all changed when he was around ten years old and his father came home smelling like someone else... Someone who wasn't his mother.
When he confronted his dad about it his father retorted with a lie. Suddenly, a sharp and disgusting smell reached XiaoZhan's nose.
He could smell deception.
It didn't stop there. He could smell guilt, sadness, fear, anger, and frustration. Scared and overwhelmed by the situation, the amount of horrible smells caused XiaoZhan to faint.
Ever since that day, XiaoZhan has developed a hate for the people who lie, because lying was the worst scent of all.
Lies of all kinds.
"Ah, sure! I want to hang out!" I actually wanted to stay home.
"Yeah, your haircut looks amazing!" It's really gross I feel bad for you.
That was until he met a young boy named Yibo.
"I like you."
The young boy stared back at him with defiant eyes, firm and unwavered. XiaoZhan could only blink at him.
"What?"
XiaoZhan brushed away this boy's confession, but there was something about him.
He smelled nice.
Yibo was straightforward. He never lied even if it was about the little things.
"I don't want to eat that-- it's gross!"
"Zhan-ge you look beautiful today."
"No, I think it's stupid."
There was not a hint of a lie.
"Zhan-ge, I love you."
It was all truth.
But most of all, XiaoZhan couldnt help but melt at the scent of the boy's love and affection.
It was the best smell.
