#You can see that yoshiki is convinced he can’t place human values on “Hikaru”- when it’s possible “hikaru” can learn#like yeah there might be fundamental differences between humans and things like “Hikaru” but there’s always a room to learn#anyway I love how Yoshiki has such deep immense respect and passion for animals and non human creatures…it kind of ties back to how he neve#Feels like he belongs in the village he’s in and often feels alienated- perhaps there’s a sense of comfort in observing and appreciating#things not human? The way he too is getting mixed and becoming something somewhat non human the more he mixes with “hikaru” is also a queer#allegory I feel and there was this flashback of hikaru saying that he just hates humans which…hm.

the wagyein has multiple overlaid meanings in relation to ivan, so this brief scene in wiege does too.
friendship: getting the others to interact with the wagyein in a friendly manner betrays ivan's own desire for true connection with them. if he teaches them how to befriend it, could they befriend his 'real', hideous self in a similar manner? mizi tries to reach it on its level, sua watches warily, and till provokes its curiosity.
cleaning: he teaches them to help the wagyein by cleaning its teeth, removing the filth, and leaving its appearance spotless. it's upkeep for a creature that can't do it for itself, but it too must keep up appearances that doesn't match its nature.
advice: all of this comes in the form of advice. since he's the first one to befriend it, he knows how to deal with the monster's maw, and can advise the others how to do it too. this is how you approach it, clean its teeth, keep it from biting you as you do. this is how you keep the threat of violence at bay - act nice, do it favours. this is how you survive, how i learnt it, and how i hope you will too.

The 2025 Gender Census is now open!

The 12th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 30th August 2025.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
