my hand slipped and i wrote fic already for Cloudward, Ho! just turning daisuke bucklesby over and over in my brain until the next episode.
give me the burden, give me the blame Rating: General Audiences Categories: F/M, Gen Relationship: past Daisuke Bucklesby/Comfrey MacLeod Characters: Daisuke Bucklesby, Comfrey MacLeod (mentioned), Olethra MacLeod (mentioned), Rest of the Zephyr crew (mentioned) Additional Tags: Character Study, Canon Compliant, Light Angst, Canon-Typical Violence (off-screen), brief transphobia from a bad guy Summary: He had tried not to be offended when she asked him to look after the kid, not because it was any kind of imposition—he'd killed better people for way less—but because she felt the damn need to ask in the first place. Daisuke looked after his own, and the MacLeods were his, or more accurately he was theirs, hers, had been since she descended like an angel from the heavens, shining silver curls and a knife-sharp grin and warm wrinkles around her eyes, and whisked him away to the skies. She may not have been his wife anymore, but that didn’t really change much; he would love her until the day somebody put a bullet between his eyes.

knowing that cloho had a rumour phase like acofaf did, i do now wonder if daisuke isn't actually divorced, everyone just assumed so after seeing him wandering around alone (with coyotes) for years.
saw someone hcing that monty sent him the coyotes (which, v cute hc), but now i wonder if maybe those were an effort to find comfrey or smth, before they all realized maybe she isnt even in the same dimension anymore.
anyways.

I love how Zac Oyama represents southern culture by naming Daisuke’s guns Biscuits and Gravy.

Zac naming his guns biscuit and gravy when he uses ‘grit’ points to add additional damage is so southern of him.

I don't know what Zac puts in his PCs when creating them but damn Daisuke is just awesome
Somehow he has a Colin Provolone sorta vibe while also being so competent it's scary

I want to talk about one specific thing the intrepid heroes are killing it at in this first episode. Now, there's absolutely no problem with information in-story being presented by the DM, as in "you remember that.." "you know that this is.." "you've done this before and.." because you aren't ACTUALLY your character and do not have all information about the world in your memory. But in this first episode, the intrepid heroes have shown that they KNOW this world. Sure, Brennan gives information, but a not insignificant amount of the exposition in this episode was delivered BY THE PLAYERS, IN-CHARACTER. Titles of Monty's books are said out loud with ease. Daisuke organically suggests "Do you think he's in Bellenuit?" already with preexisting knowledge about him, and they have an in-character conversations about Bellenuit with complete familiarity of the place and what it's like. When Monty hears that there's a ship, he asks "Is it the Kingfisher?" because he already knows that that's a ship Marya has, which HASN'T been mentioned by name yet. In-character, this is PERFECT in how effortlessly it establishes their knowledge, and makes character naturally feel like real people living in this world; and out of character, it's a testament to the effort and enthusiasm and skill put into it.

I love the character concepts this season
Proper rich boy, youngest of seven, who’s actually really into adventure and men fighting.
Heroes journey protagonist type but she’s transfemme and extremely endearing.
Divorced elderly cowboy assassin.
Captain Ahab as a haunted Slavic toymaker.
The greasiest biggest saltiest sailor with a tiny husband.
An author who hangs out with wild boars and moose, collects bugs that kids send him, and fights industrial pollution.
Everyone is instantly so lovable and fun.

"You are the author of three or four of my favorite books."
can you tell the decline of the Montgomery LaMontgommery books was my favorite bit of the episode
[Image Description: Comic of a scene from episode 1 of Dimension 20's "Cloudward, Ho!" Alt text is provided and copied below the cut. End ID]
Copied Alt Text
Image one: Behind a fancy dining table, Marya and Montgomery greet each other with a hug. Daisuke leans on the back of one of the plush chairs. Marya pulls away to gesture across from her, saying, "Okay Monty, you've got a pretty big fan over here."
Image two: Marya continues, "...and then kind of a lukewarm one." On the other side of the table, Maxwell stutters out a greeting, "That's- uh. You-" while Vanellope looks on, unimpressed. Meanwhile, Olethra is full on freaking out. Flustered, she reaches out for a handshake and whispers, "Oh. My. GOD."
