as we approach contract & free agency season and start to see articles and tweets and speculation on our specialest boys i would like to share with you guys a little chart my therapist used to have me make every time i started catastrophisizing or stressing about things beyond my control

and then she would ask me a very important question: is this a situation you can impact or are you making yourself miserable twice?

this genuinely changed my life in many aspects but one noted improvement is my attitude towards trades/signings/free agency, etc. i read a headline that stresses me out and i ask myself “am i making myself miserable twice?” and remove the thought from my mind. try as i might i cannot psychically beam my desires into kyle dubas’s skull and so i might as well not worry about it. i’d rather be miserable once than twice. you know? anyway. whatever. go my chart

rocky is today the day for you to get into you very specific and 100% accurate vision of what the world and their relationships would be like if leon was drafted in 2004 to pittsburgh and geno in 2014 to edmonton

the sun is shining, the air is crisp, and the cup is going to its new home tomorrow, so i believe today IS the day where i tell you exactly how i think leon being drafted in 2004 to pittsburgh and geno being drafted in 2014 to edmonton would be, in terms of these bitchy europeans imprinting on each other's canadian superstars. allow me to get too into it.

leon to pittsburgh. the leon/sid connection here is interesting to me because leon is in many ways very similar to geno - bullying as a love language, sarcastic, funny, earnest - but the ways in which they are different is going to have a big effect on this. geno was always incredibly effusive over sid, even when english wasn't his strong suit, often to the point of hyperbole or comedy. he knew what he was doing! leon is not that guy. he's not going to blow smoke up sid's ass for no reason, nor does he have that sort of fish-out-of-water vulnerability to him that geno had fresh out of russia and relying on translators and being kind of gangly and awkward because he hadn't outgrown it yet. because of these factors i don't think they'd latch onto each other the way geno and sid did, that us-against-the-world i-always-just-liked-him vibe. i think they would get along, especially with leon's skill and dedication to hard work, but this would be a slow-burn of a relationship. leon builds a wider social circle faster so he doesn't need to rely on sid the way geno might've, and sid is busy with being the next one and having to sort of singlehandedly drag his team out of the depths of hell, and he appreciates leon for his skill and charisma but i think they don't really start to bond until after sid's concussion. we've all seen the leon-scruffing-connor gif right? where connor's hurt, on crutches, on the phone, and leon walks up and grabs him by the back of the neck in a comforting hold, a silent you-ok?-yeah exchange between them in the quiet hallways of the arena. THAT is where leon is going to start to shine for sid, i think. he's a mother hen, he's fiercely protective, and he could absolutely do "this is stupid, sid's the captain" and he would say it loudly and to the media and he'd tell sid about it too. leon comes over to visit and doesn't let sid wallow in misery, he's the perfect mix of buck-up-tough-love and genuine-care-let-me-do-that-for-you, and when sid comes back to play it's officially too late for him. he's got a delibitating crush on his intimidatingly hot new best friend that he will nurture and pine over for years. now i think for leon it probably happens after the back-to-back cups, probably when sid's drunk enough and high enough on victory to finally make a move. leon is, i think, very all-or-nothing, and he'd never considered sid as a realistic option but once he does, he cannot imagine why he would ever ever EVER make another choice. it is important to note that their relationship would be a net-positive for both of them. they are able to communicate issues and call each other on their shit and they would play together incredibly. it's healthy!

now on the other hand, connor and geno on the oilers make each other so, so, so, so, SO much worse, and for this reason i'm obsessed with the concept. i think connor, especially when he was young, a rookie, the NEXT next one, with so much to live up to, getting injured his first year, all of that - he's seeking validation. he's desperate for it. am i doing okay? am i doing good enough? am i actually able to do this? he's shy, and so quiet, and everyone around him is probably intimidated by him, except not the giant russian they drafted the year before him who is, to put it kindly, a black hole of validation. that sid best, sid greatest, nobody can do what sid does, best hockey player in the world, best person, best friend, best guy works with sid because sid doesn't absorb it. he doesn't need it, it just makes him flustered and amused and he can shut it down. connor needs it. i think baby connor and baby geno get stuck in the you're the best-do you really mean it? loop where they're just totally and completely obsesed with each other at the exclusion of everyone else. because on TOP of that, it goes BOTH WAYS! connor's sort of desperate leo this leo that leo leo leo best player in the world leo leo leo energy is fine with leon because it just bounces off him the way geno's energy bounces off sid. it will not bounce off geno, because baby geno is ALSO seeking validation. is he as good as ovechkin? does he deserve to be here? is the media right about him? did he make the right choice to come here? oh, it's delicious to me. they will NEVER stop. if you think mcdrai or sidgeno are disgusting about each other it would genuinely be nauseating to hear mcmalkin talk to, about, or around each other. of course they're not really getting what they NEED from that validation, it's never going to be enough to stop the gnawing ache for more, but they will go down in an absolutely glorious ring of fire. in this world geno probably DOES test free agency when his contract is up because all of connor's fawning has actually made him LESS secure in his overall place in edmonton, and connor has a total meltdown, and it explodes. this is delicious to me. i want 100k words about this but someone else needs to write it.
