“The conscience is the chaos of chimeras, of lusts and of temptations, the furnace of dreams, the cave of the ideas which are our shame, it is the pandemonium of sophisms, the battle-field of the passions. At certain hours, penetrate within the livid face of a human being who reflects, and look at what lies behind; look into that soul, look into that obscurity. There, beneath the external silence, there are combats of giants as in Homer, melees of dragons and hydras, and clouds of phantoms as in Milton, ghostly labyrinths as in Dante. What a gloom enwraps that infinite which each man bears within himself, and by which he measures in despair the desires of his will and the actions of his life!” – Les Miserables

Modern Book Review
Ana Larragoity Cubillas is a young Spanish woman with vivid visions of unexplored lands. As a descendant of a conquistador, she is determined to continue the family tradition and voyage to Puerto Rico. With its luscious vegetation and sugar cane fields, this island in the Caribbean offers an abundance of opportunities and pitfalls. “Conquistadora” by Esmeralda Santiago effectively creates an atmosphere of adventure and survival that frames Ana's young adulthood. She is intelligent, curious, and stubbornly combative toward 19th century expectations. Throughout her journey she makes difficult decisions that cause relentless consequences. Her goals cannot be altered and sacrifices must be made to reach them. The story is engrossing and forces the reader to ponder just how far one must go to make it all worthwhile.

In honor of Halloween I made Pumpkin Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting. The recipe is courtesy of the Neelys and you can find it here. The cupcakes themselves are pretty savory but the frosting makes up for this with a lot of confectioner's sugar. I was out of pecans so I didn't add it though they probably would have detracted from the sweetness of the frosting. I definitely couldn't eat more than one of them but if you have a sweet tooth I would recommend trying it out.

"He smiled understandingly - much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced - or seemed to face - the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey." - The Great Gatsby
