Uncle Gary: You know what other movie I like? John Wick.

I had this conversation with my brother in law. When I said I loved how deep SW was, he laughed and said “no it’s not”. I was like “sure it is, it’s myth retold for a modern audience, based on the heroes journey and the works of Joseph Campbell, and is steeped in symbolism. There’s so many layers!” and he was like “nah SW is my childhood” and laughed at me like I was an idiot.

While I do write fanfiction I haven’t previously thought it decent enough or popular enough to warrant a Ko-fi. However, after surviving Hurricane Michael I’ve had a few people reach out asking if I had one! So here it is.

My family lives - lived - in Panama City which is one of the areas most egregiously affected by the storm. Our house is still standing, for now, but not in livable condition. There is a tree on the roof which if it were to fall completely (it is sort of being held up by the side of a ditch, hard to explain, but definitely precarious) it would block the exit. Our back door is already blocked by several trees that fell in the backyard. There is also another tree that hasn’t fallen yet but the roots are about halfway out of the ground. Actually, it could have fallen by now for all I know, as we left town yesterday afternoon. Our car was also flooded despite covering it with a tarp and then wrapping it with rope like a Christmas ham. During the storm the tarp actually worked its way mostly off. Anyway, it will most likely be totaled because of mold.

Our power company released a statement that power would be off for weeks. The mayor of Lynn Haven, which is like a subsidiary of Panama City, has estimated two months. There is also no running water and cell service is abysmal if working at all. Even once power and such was restored, it will take time to repair the damage. So we are effectively homeless for the foreseeable future.

One of my best friends, who I’ve known since third grade, got with her dad in Pensacola and we are staying with him (and friend’s step-mom) temporarily. But it is not a long-term solution. Along with the four of us we have seven animals, three dogs and four cats. While they have made us feel welcome and have done so much for us already we don’t want to impose on them more than a few days. We do have someplace to go long term but it is about as far away as possible while still being in the same country. Oregon. Getting there, especially with the animals, is going to be a problem. An expensive problem. Flying would cost ~$2500 for just the people, not counting the pets. I can’t figure out how to get a price for them. Renting a car to make the 5-day trip would be around $2k not counting gas, hotels along the way, food, etc.

We would be forever grateful for any help anyone is willing to give. Whether that be a donation or sharing or just a kind word and a gif.

Summary:

Modern AU. Rey loves everything about her new apartment; everything except her neighbor who keeps her awake at night with his nightmares, lonely and plagued by his demons. She knows she doesn’t have room in her life to fix another broken thing but how can she resist? Especially when there’s an undeniable tension between them, something neither of them ever expected.

Over six months and 120K words later, Broken Things is finally finished. It’s so bittersweet but the biggest thing that I can take away from this is all of the love and support every friend and reader has given me on this journey. You guys are all the reason that I just completed my first story ever. EVER. I can’t thank you guys enough and don’t have the words to describe how much it means to me.

It’s amazing to be able to share a story so close to my heart with all of you and through it, feel like I’ve become a part of this fandom. My Reylo family and friends, especially all of you in The Writing Den, have my eternal love and gratitude. I love you all.

I’m happy to finally have the time to finish the second half of my tribute to the next chapter of the Star Wars saga: Episode VII! This time I have created the work after watching the film (a hundred or more times by now), and I’m glad my first design might appropriately fit some themes that might be explored in the these movies.

My concept for the “Awakened” series is all about balance. Both characters have powerful ties to the light side and dark side of the Force. I’m very excited to see both Rey and Kylo’s story arcs and what will happen in the next two episodes, as well as all the great things to come from Star Wars!
