EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - Joh! Discusses Inspiration Behind Latest Single “cupid”

Let me introduce you to the incredible Joh! Emerging from the vibrant hip-hop scene of Busan, he has transformed into a genre-defying artist whose musical style breaks all the traditional boundaries.
Fuelled by the vibrant energy of hyperpop artists and inspired by iconic talents like keshi, Justin Bieber, and Karri, Joh! is on an exciting mission to create a one-of-a-kind sound that effortlessly merges genres. His captivating storytelling and mesmerising R&B melodies provide listeners with both comfort and a sense of connection.
Collaboration comes second nature to Joh! His smash hit track "Movin'," featuring the incredible starfall who boasts over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, dropped in January 2023, and has already racked up more than 360,000 streams, earning Joh! widespread recognition.
Joh! has also showcased his song writing talent as a lyricist and composer for the viral K-pop sensation KISS OF LIFE’s hit "Sticky." He often teams up with internet stars like Richard Sabiaga and Justin Han, as well as fellow musicians such as sunkis, Ethan Low, and 0wave.
Following the release of his latest single “cupid” on March 14, 2025, I had the pleasure of connecting with Joh! for an exclusive email interview for TINYgMUSIC.

Hi Joh! Congratulations on the release of your latest single. “Cupid.” My name is Rosa and I appreciate you taking the time to answer some questions for the readers at TINYgMUSIC.
You have just dropped your latest single “cupid” on March 14. Can you share the story behind the song, and what emotions or messages you hope to express through it?”
A: This song is about a boy who is in a so-called "situationship." He is confused because he isn't used to this kind of relationship. He keeps telling himself not to be confused anymore, but he can't help it. That’s why the song is titled "cupid" as he is begging Cupid to help him escape from this relationship. While working on "cupid," my main goal was to capture a sense of confusion and chaos. I wanted to make people feel that ‘Joh!’ is in turmoil.
"cupid" is described as a gritty take on love and longing. What motivated you to delve into this theme, and how does it resonate with your personal experiences or artistic vision? Have you faced feelings of emotional numbness, heartbreak or the challenge of moving on from someone special, as reflected in your lyrics?
A: Of course. Actually, I think I'm a really emotional person. When I'm in a relationship, many factors make me feel deeply—sometimes to the point of exhaustion, anger, or sadness. I've experienced moments where love felt overwhelming, and at times, even numbing. Moving on from someone special has never been easy for me, and I think those emotions naturally find their way into my music. As you know, all the songs I've released, as well as my unreleased demos, revolve around love. Writing about love—whether it's beautiful, painful, or chaotic—always fascinates me and fuels my creativity. I love talking about love.
Could you walk us through your creative process when crafting a new track like "cupid"? Do you typically begin with lyrics, melody, or a concept?
A: I always start with melodies because, to me, the melody is the most important part of a song for capturing people's interest. But sometimes, I set the concept first when I already have an idea or visual images in mind.
"cupid" serves as a teaser for your forthcoming album, “Discord Kid.” What can listeners anticipate in terms of themes, sound, and the progression of your musical journey?
A: I want my music career to feel like a drama to listeners. "Discord Kid" is not just about love. It's about feeling out of sync with the world and how that shapes the way we connect with others. I’ve often felt disconnected, like I don’t quite belong, and that feeling naturally seeps into my music. Love isn’t always comforting; sometimes, it amplifies loneliness and confusion. This album reflects that through unexpected sounds, pitch shifts, and BPM changes, creating a sense of emotional chaos. I see this as the start of a new chapter for Joh!, and I hope listeners can feel that shift.

As a renowned lyricist, your words are always central to your music. What is the most personal or significant lyric you've written for "cupid," and why?
A: "You’re toxic, come over, never leave." This line feels the most intense to me. Of course, there are many other lyrics in the song that resonate deeply, but I think this one is the most direct in expressing the core message of "cupid." It perfectly captures the contradiction of knowing something is bad for you, yet still craving it. I’ve experienced moments where I was fully aware that a relationship was unhealthy, but emotionally, I just couldn’t pull myself away. That internal struggle, the battle between logic and emotions, is something I wanted to express in this song, and I think this lyric says it in the most straightforward way.
How do you envision your audience connecting with "cupid" and your forthcoming album? Are there particular emotions or messages you hope to convey through your music?
A: I think it could be really interesting for listeners to notice the contrast between how I perceive love in "cupid" and in the other tracks on the album. But at the same time, the underlying emotion of "confusion" will remain consistent throughout. At some point, I realised that love is rarely simple, it’s unpredictable, messy, and often leaves us questioning everything. And I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I hope that when people listen to this album, they see their own experiences in these songs. Rather than just being Joh!’s love story, I want this to feel like our love story. A story about the confusion, the highs and lows, and the moments when love makes no sense but still pulls us in.
For our readers who are just getting to know you through this interview, I’d like to ask a few questions about your musical journey.
Moving from Busan to Seoul must have quite a change. How did that move influence your music and the direction of your career?
A: I’d say it was one of the biggest changes in my life. At first, I was scared, but now I know moving to Seoul was the right decision. Musically, it wasn’t about leaving Busan behind but expanding on what I had. Busan gave me a strong creative foundation, while Seoul introduced me to new perspectives and opportunities. Blending these two worlds has shaped my sound, making it more diverse and layered. I’ve met incredible people, the NAISU team who continue to inspire me, and thanks to them, I’m turning my dreams into reality. I couldn’t be happier.
How do you blend traditional R&B vibes with the innovative sounds of hyperpop? What excites you about this fusion of sounds?
A: I’ve always loved R&B melodies, so I wanted to blend them with the more unconventional, high energy tracks of hyperpop. The contrast between smooth, emotional melodies and glitchy, distorted textures felt really fresh and exciting. I experimented with pitched vocals, glitchy synths, and unpredictable drum patterns while keeping the soulful essence of R&B intact. What excites me most about this fusion is that it has no rules. I can take what I love from both genres and push them further. More than anything, it just sounded fun, so I went for it haha.

Let’s talk about your remarkable talents as a key composer and lyricist for LIGHTSUM, and the viral sensation “Sticky” for KISS OF LIFE.
What is it like to work behind the scenes for such large-scale productions, and how does that experience influence your solo music?
A: No matter the genre, the act of making music is always the same. I’ve constantly been thinking about how to create something more fun and new, and that energy naturally carried over into my own music. Looking back now, I think it’s just helped me become someone who can push boundaries and make even more exciting and fresh sounds than before.
If you could recommend one song for your fans to listen to now (other than your own), what would it be and why?
A: "Superman" by Marco Luca. I’m writing this at night, and I always get pretty sentimental around this time as my mind fills with thoughts and worries. Lately, this song has been my biggest comfort during those moments, so that’s why it instantly came to mind.
Are there any artists or producers, whether in Korea or internationally, you dream of collaborating with in the future?
A: Justin Bieber. I thought of him even before finishing the question haha. Without his music, I might not be making the kind of music I do today or even imagining the things I create. That’s how much he is an inspiration to me. So before I die, I want to work with him at least once.
As we wrap up this interview, I’d like to ask about your future aspirations.
What can we look forward to from Joh! in the future? Are you working on any new projects, or are there genres you’d like to explore that we haven’t heard yet?
A: There are so many exciting things coming up. Right now, I’m working on an album called "Discord Kid," which "cupid" is a part of. I’m focusing on showing a more personal side of Joh!, something I haven’t really revealed before. That means the album will include a variety of sounds and styles that you haven’t heard from me yet. Even after that, there’s a lot more in the works. Whatever it is, I’m ready to live up to your expectations, so when it drops, you have to check it out.
As an artist, you’ve achieved so much already. What are your long-term goals or dreams for your music career and where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?
A: Nah, this is just the beginning! Honestly, I think I have just one big dream right now to take my music overseas. We’re seeing more and more Asians, making it there and doing amazing things. And I truly believe that my team, NAISU, and I have what it takes to do the same. I just want to show the world that there are Asian artists out here creating something special. Right now, that’s my main focus.

SMTOWN LIVE 2025 In 2025 Adds KAI And NCT 127 To Their 30th Anniversary Celebration

Scheduled to take place at Dignity Health Sports Park on May 11th, the event will now feature top artists KAI and NCT 127, joining an already stellar lineup that includes global superstars like aespa, NCT DREAM, WayV, RIIZE, and NCT WISH, all coming together in LA for the first time. Despite two members of NCT currently serving in the military, the group is set to deliver incredible performances for fans eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see all the units of NCT NATION united at one event.
Fans can look forward to special appearances by legendary artists such as Red Velvet, Super Junior, TVXQ!, SHINee’s KEY and MINHO, and EXO’s SUHO and CHANYEOL. Q&A With GOT7 Members Following The Release of ‘WINTER HEPTAGON’ Currently Taking the World by Storm

GOT7, yesterday, released their hugely awaited new mini-album, “WINTER HEPTAGON,” taking the global music scene by storm with its chameleon-like musical identity.
According to the streaming platform iTunes, “WINTER HEPTAGON” claimed the No. 1 spot on its Top Albums chart in 27 regions worldwide including Australia, Brazil, France and Singapore upon its release, and entered the top ranks in 49 regions. Its lead track, “PYTHON” also saw international success, ranking first on the Top Singles chart in 13 regions and securing positions in the upper ranks of 41 regions. Other tunes from the album are going strong as well, sweeping the Top Singles charts around the world.
Here we have the full Q&A with GOT7 members re the release of “WINTER HEPTAGON”.
Q. “WINTER HEPTAGON” is GOT7’s new album in about three years. How do you feel about making a comeback and how have you been recently?
A. Mark: All of us are so happy and thrilled to make a comeback as GOT7. We actually wanted to return earlier, but it took some time due to certain circumstances. We are working hard to meet our fans after such a long time, and we can’t wait to spend some fun time with them on stage.

Q. Please introduce “PYTHON,” the lead track of the “WINTER HEPTAGON” album. Given that all the members took part in the creative process for every track, how would you define GOT7’s musical identity?
A. JAY B: “WINTER HEPTAGON” represents the idea that while each of us can shine on our own, we shine even brighter when we come together in winter. We came up with this idea because we actually debuted in winter. The lead track, “PYTHON,” is characterised by hip-hop beats with minimal sounds and hooky melodies. It is a bit heavier compared to GOT7’s usual bright and refreshing songs. We also reflected a lot on our musical identity and concluded that we are like chameleons, capable of adapting to any direction.

Q. How did you plan and produce the “WINTER HEPTAGON” album?
A. Jackson: This album contains songs produced by each of the members. We have high expectations for it, as it not only features GOT7’s music, but also the distinctive musical colours each of us represents. I am especially grateful to our leader, who has guided us to be here together.

Q. Following the album’s release, GOT7 will appear on various music shows and stage the “NESTFEST” concert. To your fans who have shown unwavering support for your musical activities, please tell them about your plans and determination.
A. Jinyoung: We will do our best in every way so that we and our fans can look back on this time and the concert as “hot and happy” moments in the future. We will meet our followers through various content that we have been preparing, and we are excited for its release. We cannot wait to meet our fans soon.

Q. This year marks the 11th anniversary of GOT7’s debut. What has driven you to perform as a full-group for such a long time? As you approach your 12th year in your career, do you feel any new sense of responsibility or emotions?
A. Youngjae: Our fans who support us are the driving force behind our continued unity. We still enjoy being together as a group, too. As I approach my 12th year in my singing career, and as a member of GOT7, I always try to take responsibility for everything. The team is one, so I think taking care of and protecting myself is equivalent to taking care of and protecting the team.

Q. As a representative global K-pop group enjoying enduring popularity, what is GOT7’s next goal?
A. BamBam: Our next goal might be to hold stadium concerts. We want to perform in front of even more fans (Ahgase.)

Q. Please send a message to Ahgase, who has consistently sent love and support to you.
A. Yugyeom: Just as you have continued to send us love, we will also do our best to keep repaying your love. So, please keep your eyes on us. Ahgase, we appreciate and love you so much, and we support you, too!

The album’s title, “WINTER HEPTAGON,” refers to the seven stars that are always present but more visible in winter. These stars symbolise the GOT7 members, who shine even brighter when they come together. This collective brilliance reflects GOT7’s enduring popularity, which may empower the members to continue their adventure as a septet.
“WINTER HEPTAGON” is a nine-track album led by “PYTHON,” a song produced by member BamBam that explores the inescapable fate of those destined to be together. The “PYTHON” music video, portraying GOT7 as both glamorous artists on stage and carefree boys in a snowy field, is garnering attention on YouTube as well, amassing numerous views.

J-Hope to Perform at LE GALA DES PIÈCES JUANES in Paris

BTS' J-Hope is set to perform at Le Gala des Pièces Jaunes at La Défense Arena in Paris, France, on January 23 (local time). The announcement follows the unveiling of his first solo world tour.
Led by France's First Lady Brigitte Macron, the charity event is hosted by the Opération Pièces Jaunes foundation and aims to raise funds for hospitalised children and teenagers. With a history of high-profile performances and successful fundraising efforts, Le Gala des Pièces Jaunes has been regarded as one of the most esteemed charitable events in the country.

Along with the announcement made on France 2, a teaser featuring a star-studded line-up was revealed. This year, j-hope will perform alongside other iconic superstars, including Katy Perry, John Legend, J Balvin, and more. The performances will be broadcast on France 2 on January 28 (local time). This marks J-Hope's solo European TV performance debut, signalling his continuous evolution as a global icon.
The announcement comes on the heels of the unveiling of J-Hope’s first solo world tour 'HOPE ON THE STAGE,’ which will feature a total of 31 shows in 15 cities across the world, including New York, Seoul, Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, Osaka, and more.
The North American leg of the tour will make stops in 6 cities, with the grand finale being J-Hope’s highly-anticipated solo stadium debut at the iconic BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. The milestone event will make him the first South Korean solo artist to ever headline a stadium show in the United States. J-Hope (Jeong Hoseok) is a South Korean rapper, dancer, songwriter, music producer and member of 21st century pop icons, BTS. GOT7 to Electrify Fans With ‘NESTFEST’ Concert in February

GOT7 is poised to stage the “NESTFEST” concert in Seoul this February after making an eagerly awaited comeback.
Kakao Entertainment today announced that GOT7’s concert will take place at Seoul’s SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium on February 1-2. This marks the group's first official performance as a septet in Seoul in nearly six years, since 2019. The announcement of the event has thrilled its fans at home and abroad, who have been looking forward to the K-pop hotshot’s return.
Kakao Entertainment also unveiled a poster and teaser for the concert across its official SNS channels and Melon Ticket, an online reservation platform.
The concert’s title, “NESTFEST,” signals the GOT7 members’ commitment to creating a visual and auditory extravaganza for their dedicated fandom, Ahgase. The teaser is a testament to GOT7's heartfelt connection with its followers as well, which features the message, “I always missed the green glitter” along with touching melodies that convey its deep longing to reunite with its fans.
The Seoul concert will occur shortly after the release of GOT7’s nine-track mini-album, “WINTER HEPTAGON,” scheduled for January. 20. The album, illuminating the septet’s musical evolution and maturity, will be fronted by the lead track, “PYTHON.” Produced by member BamBam, the addictive song features pop melodies combined with hip-hop beats, portraying an inescapable fate between those who are meant to be together.
All GOT7 members actively took part in the album’s creative process, blending their individual talents with the group’s collective identity. Jackson and Youngjae have credits on “SMOOTH” and “Our Youth,” respectively, while Yugyeom worked on “REMEMBER.” JAY B contributed to “Darling” and BamBam played a pivotal role in making “TIDAL WAVE.” Mark and Jinyoung each contributed to “OUT THE DOOR” and “her.” Notably, for the fan song, “Yours Truly,” composed by JAY B, all members collaborated on the lyrics to impart heartwarming messages to their fans.
GOT7 plans to premiere some of the new songs at the upcoming concert, aiming to present indelible memories to the audience and celebrate the 11th anniversary of its debut together.
"WINTER HEPTAGON” will hit streaming sites in Korea and beyond at 6 p.m., January. 20 (KST). Tickets for GOT7’s February concert will be exclusively available on Melon Ticket (ticket.melon.com), with sales beginning at 8 pm., January. 17 (KST).

South Korean girl group KISS OF LIFE has announced the European and UK leg of their first world tour, KISS ROAD starting on February 20.
The European and UK leg of KISS ROAD will kick off at The Alcatraz in Milan, Italy, following their sold-out North American tour. KISS OF LIFE will perform in thirteen cities from February to March, with additional dates to be announced. KISS ROAD promises to be a tour that fans won't want to miss, featuring unforgettable performances, impressive stage production, and an extensive setlist.

KISS OF LIFE is a multinational 4-member girl group that debuted on July 5, 2023. dearALICE is the first of its kind — a boy band formed via a TV show format by two leaders of Korean entertainment, Kakao Entertainment and SM Entertainment, and award-winning British producers and music entertainment specialists Moon&Back Media, the masterminds behind Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor, who introduced global superstars One Direction to the world. The original six-part series Made in Korea: The K-Pop Experience aired on BBC One as part of its prestigious Saturday night schedule with international distribution of the series handled by ITV Studios and offered viewers an exclusive glimpse into the world-renowned K-Pop training process. V of BTS)." This year, V returns with a collaboration that perfectly captures the end-of-year spirit with South Korean ballad singer Park Hyo Shin, known for his powerful and emotive voice. Their voices come together to beautifully capture the warmth and nostalgia of the season.
“Winter Ahead (with PARK HYO SHIN)” was inspired by V’s wish for his fans to have a warm and joyful winter. A jazz enthusiast, V reached out to Park Hyo Shin, with whom he has a longstanding friendship, to propose the idea of creating a winter-themed single. Park Hyo Shin happily took part to create a jazz pop track that reflects both of their tastes, shaped by thoughtful development and careful attention to every detail over time.

The evocative lyrics were written by Jesse Harris, known for penning Norah Jones' hit "Don’t Know Why." The poetic words blend seamlessly with the warm melody, while the smooth, soothing vocals of V and Park Hyo Shin bring a comforting sense of warmth to listeners.
Setting the stage for the holiday season, “Winter Ahead (with PARK HYO SHIN)” arrives just one week before the highly anticipated release of “White Christmas (with V of BTS),” V’s duet with the legendary Bing Crosby, dropping on December 6. “White Christmas,” originally released in 1942 by Bing Crosby and beloved worldwide, will be brought to life again by V with his unique touch to this timeless classic to deliver warmth and joy just in time for the holidays.

‘INTRO : DREAMSCAPE’: a hyper-pop exploration of NCT DREAM’s alternate dream-like reality, or ‘dreamscape’. The bright, bubbly melody is interrupted by sound distortions and glitches, an intriguing preview to the album’s journey.
‘When I’m With You’: The lead single is a house-based electro-pop track exploring the complexities and realities of falling in love. Featuring a rap verse written by member MARK, the euphoric tune is a tailspin of joy and confusion that personifies the overwhelming feeling that comes with love and dreaming. ‘Flying Kiss’: Written by member HAECHAN, the track is a mix of rhythmic pop and rock that paints a dreamy picture of falling in love.
‘i hate fruits’: The theme of dreamy acts of falling in love continues with ‘i hate fruits’, using hyper-pop synths to examine the ups and downs of love. Written by MARK, the lyrics compare love to an addictive sweet fruit you adore so much you almost want to hate it.
‘No Escape’: Further into “DREAMSCAPE”, the group delves into darker themes with this song, which explores a nightmarish reality filled with lies.
‘Best of Me’: The 80s pop-infused banger is another HAECHAN-penned song. It delves into the deception and allure of a dark reality.
‘You (숲)’: ‘You (숲)’ represents a turning point in the album, where they begin to seek light in this darkness, with newfound determination.
‘하늘을 나는 꿈 (Heavenly)’: The seven members come closer to their dream world with evocative lyrics that capture the child-like dream of flying in the sky in this hopeful song.
‘밤 (Night Poem)’: The previous track flows smoothly into this song- the music evoking visuals of a deepening night sky similar to a darker growing love.
‘Off The Wall’: The payoff of such an emotional labyrinth is the album’s penultimate song, a disco-funk flavoured pop record that conveys the importance of letting go and having fun.
‘Rains in Heaven’: The concluding track is NCT DREAM’s English single released in August, co-written by MARK with Adrian McKinnon and British pop songwriter Bryn Christopher (who has worked with the likes of Sigala and Louis Tomlinson). Praised by 1883 as a track “full of ethereal 80s synth-pop moments, gorgeous vocals, and the most immaculate vibes”, ‘Rains In Heaven’ also marked the group’s third Top 20 on the UK’s Official Single Sales Chart.

ENHYPEN return with their dreamy 2nd Studio Repackage Album ROMANCE : UNTOLD -daydream-, out now.
Expanding upon themes from their 2nd studio album released earlier this year in July, the repackage edition, ROMANCE : UNTOLD -daydream- draws listeners into a vivid vision of a romantic and yet oddly spectral daydream. Through a tracklist that comprises of two new tracks—the lead single “No Doubt” and “Daydream”—in addition to 10 tracks from the original studio album, the septet expresses a range of perplexing emotions associated with love in this daydream, in which one growingly becomes certain of their feelings of love in the long hours of the day spent without the other.
Introducing the new release, ENHYPEN said “The new album features a greater depth of emotions and a wider range of musical expression across the music, the music video, and the choreography,” adding that “It’s going to be an album that closes out the big year we had, filled with everything we have.”
The newly unveiled layer of the ‘ROMANCE’ series opens with an urban hip-hop track, “Daydream.” The track sings the heart of a boy who, in the absence of their lover, is pulled into a nightmare of one’s own imaginations and loneliness, but paradoxically falls even deeper in love. What follows is the danceable synth-pop track and lead single “No Doubt,” in which the boy becomes unequivocally sure about their love for the other, even when circumstances do not allow them to spend every second together.

The music video that accompanies the lead single likens the confounding emotions of being in love to the experiences of an office worker with a capacity for delusion. Bound by restrictions of an otherworldly office setting and haunted by their own imagination, the ENHYPEN members venture through the lovesick hours of not being able to see ‘you’ in the cinematic video.
Since their debut, ENHYPEN have solidified their identity by introducing unique concepts–such as surreal, dreamy, and youthful vibes–to express their album narratives. Following the previous chapters of ‘BORDER,’ ‘DIMENSION,’ ‘MANIFESTO,’ and ‘BLOOD,’ ROMANCE : UNTOLD, the first iteration of the ‘ROMANCE’ series released in July unravelled the story of seven boys who vow to protect their love at all costs.
The album hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200, earning the band their first top 3 entry on the chart. Album sales for the release surpassed their previous record by 30,000 units, set with their previous EP ORANGE BLOOD released in November 2023. ROMANCE : UNTOLD sold more than 2.3 million copies worldwide in its first week, with 1.8 million copies sold on the first day alone.

Hip-hop / R&B girl group XG releases their newest single, “IYKYK,” which serves as the second pre-release track from their second mini album, AWE.

"IYKYK" expresses XG’s bold challenge to break boundaries with new endeavours, portraying the members as they explore the limitless universe at lightspeed. The track invites listeners to join them on a journey to an uncharted dimension that is not easily reached. “IYKYK” samples m-flo’s 2001 hit, “prism” and blends it with a rhythmic two-step beat, creating a sensation of drifting through space and heightening the excitement for the adventure ahead. Paired with the release of the single is a music video. The music video for “IYKYK” offers a fresh perspective from XG’s previous videos, showcasing the world through their eyes. It explores the question, “How does the world look to them? Is it mysterious and otherworldly?” The concept centres around a “Mutated Sense,” where each XG member’s unique sensory distortion allows them to see the true light (a planet). The mini album AWE reflects the psychological process of awe that people experience when encountering a new presence— a mix of fear and curiosity as they come to accept it. This album aims to evoke that sense of awe and provide listeners with a unique experience of XG’s music in everyday life. The album will be available in several versions: the XG version which is a thematic package that represents XG’s world, the ALPHAZ version which is a special package for the XG OFFICIAL FANCLUB "ALPHAZ", the Solo version which contains individual member designs, and the Regular version which symbolises the group's overall identity. XG is currently on their first world tour, “The first HOWL” which started last Friday in Las Vegas and will perform in eight cities across North America, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Grand Prairie, Sugar Land, Duluth, New York, and Chicago. Following the North American leg, the UK & Europe tour will kick off in Manchester on November 18 and continue through London, Berlin, Paris, Düsseldorf, Brussels, and Amsterdam, covering seven cities. In 2025, they will also hold eight additional shows across four cities in Japan: Nagoya, Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Osaka.
