Also the historical books are SO GOOD because you really can’t outgrow them?? Like yes I am no longer 9 years old and I don’t worry about loose teeth or spelling bees anymore but I’m not talking about surface level problems, I mean the themes are so universally applicable and important for everyone to remember.
I remember there’s this part in Felicity’s series where Elizabeth doesn’t defend her when Annabelle is calling Felicity’s father a traitor. She feels betrayed because her friend didn’t stand up for her and thinks they can no longer be friends. Her mother comforts her, and reminds her that people react to situations differently, and it’s asking a lot of courage to have someone stand up to their (older!) sibling - an amount of courage not everyone has. Yes, this is a rough patch in their friendship, but it is far more rewarding to try to fix things than to just throw something out as soon as it isn’t perfect.
That lesson stuck with me a lot, but I wasn’t aware of its power until I re-read the series for the first time in a long time a few years back. Her mother is right, and it’s affected how I treat my friends when we disagree or when they act in a way I wouldn’t have. It’s given me a greater scope of empathy, and a further reason to be glad I didn’t push away my roots when I grew up.

“Kirsten pulled a piece of dry, hard bread from her apron pocket and broke it in two. She and Marta fed their dolls before they fed themselves. ‘What’s the very first thing you want to do in America?’, Kirsten asked.”
