On 4 January 1914, a momentous event unfolded in Paris as officials and art enthusiasts eagerly gathered to witness the long-awaited return of the renowned painting known as the 'Mona Lisa,' or 'La Gioconda,' or 'La Joconde.'
This masterpiece, a product of Leonardo da Vinci's (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) brilliance during the Italian Renaissance, had been unlawfully taken from the Louvre Museum in 1911 by an Italian handyman named Vincenzo Peruggia (8 October 1881 – 8 October 1925).
Following an exhaustive two-year search, the painting was ultimately recovered from Peruggia's possession in Florence, Italy.
The homecoming of this painting to Paris held immense significance, considering that its theft had triggered widespread panic and raised serious concerns regarding the security of the Louvre's priceless art collection.
The extensive media coverage surrounding the theft is undoubtedly a contributing factor to the enduring fascination the public holds for this remarkable painting even today.
