In the evening Atticus was leaving to town, so me and Dill followed Jem to the jailhouse. We saw Atticus reading the newspaper from the distance. Just as we were about to leave, a group of people showed up. They seemed to threaten Atticus, so I had to run to him. Atticus told us to go home, and the men told us to back off. Jem refused to leave, and I am happy he didn’t. I noticed they weren’t the same men as last night, but I spotted Mr. Cunningham in the group. I told him to say hi to Walter for me, which seemed to embarrass him a little. Mr. Cunningham tells the men to leave, and Mr. Underwood appears from the corner. If we haven’t gone, what would have happened to tom Robinson. Was this the reason Heck Tate came yesterday to warn Atticus, and why Atticus came down today? I want to be more like Atticus, he was brave and stood up for what he believes in, even when his life is on the line.

Dill
Aunt Alexander has been with us for a few days, and I keep getting in trouble because of her. She doesn’t seem to like Calpurnia, and wants her to leave. This is the first time I have seen Atticus speak up against her, and says Cal is staying. Apparently, Jem is now on Auntie’s side, and we ended up in a huge fight over it.  Atticus separated us, and we went to bed, but then I soon realized we weren’t the only ones in the room. Dill was hiding under the bed, and he told us he escaped from his new father’s place. I was in shook, and couldn’t believe he would do such a thing. He was trapped in a basement, and was given nothing to eat. He stole thirteen dollars from his Mother and came all the way from Mississippi to Alabama by himself for me! Well it wasn’t true, but Dill did say that he felt like his parents didn’t want him around. We continued to talk about random things, and later fell asleep.

Calpurnia’s Church
During the summer dill returned, and I just finished second grade. Since Atticus was gone, we had to attend Calpurnia’s church today. She made me wear a dress and act proper before going. After entering the church, I noticed many difference between ours. They didn’t have books, and the church was kind of worn down and old. The people where welcoming, except for Lula who Calpurnia seemed to hate. The visit to the church though me a whole new side to Calpurnia. She was raised in the finch’s landing and taught her son Zeebo with old books. Not only that, but Calpurnia talked differently with us then with Negros. So, I tried what Atticus told me, and viewed things from her perspective. Maybe it’s because she is trying to fit into her differing surroundings. When we walked home, I noticed aunt Alexander was waiting for us on the porch. I have a feeling it’s going to be a long time since she leaves.

Ms. Dubose
Today was supposed to be the last day Jem reads to Miss Dubose. Let me explain how we got into this mess. Dubose is known as the mean old lady in Maycomb, so she wouldn’t pass up her opportunity to call Atticus a “Nigger-lover”, whatever that means. Jem finally had enough when she included our mother into her daily insults, so he smashed all her camellia bushes with a baton. As a punishment Jem had to read to her for a month, and Atticus made me go with him. He would read Ivanhoe to her, but I still didn’t understand the point since also she seemed to care about was the alarm clock. She would just stare at it, until it went off and she would take her medicine after we left. It was supposed to be a month, but Atticus later extended it one more week. Each day felt longer and longer, and my pity for her grew. Well eventually she didn’t bother me anymore since Atticus told me how insulting us doesn’t do any harm to us but herself.

Atticus
From today on, my opinion on Atticus will forever change. Me and Jem always viewed him as old and boring. He is usually never around us, but when he was, we would just read instead of hunting or fishing like the others. While me and Jem were exploring, we noticed Tim Johnson was acting strange. Calpurnia warned the neighborhood, and Called Heck Tate who is the sheriff of Maycomb. Mr. Tate came to shoot the dog, but he gave the gun to Atticus instead. Me and Jem were very puzzled, and wouldn’t understand why. Atticus shot at Tim with one bullet, and killed him. How come we went all this time without knowing who Atticus really was. Maybe he’s too busy with his job, and doesn’t have time for things like hunting like the other dads. Know I understand that it takes more courage to stand up for what we believe in than acting brave. Well I know that it’s more important to stand up to my own believes against others just like in school. Just like Atticus is defending tom Robinson, which takes more courage than firing at a mad dog.

Miss Maudie’s House
My day started with Atticus waking me up in a hurry, and I didn’t quit understand in the moment. We stepped outside, and a blaze of fire was coming out of Miss Maudie’s house.  Men came to stop the fire, but I kept worrying about our house, what if it is also burned down by the fire! I was so fascinated about the fire since nothing interesting usually happens in Maycomb. Me and Jem stood far away from the fire, close to the Radley’s place. After the fire was out, we entered the house away from the cold. To my surprise, I didn’t know I had a blanket on me until Atticus pointed it out! I was so confused as to how it got there, but then Atticus suggested it was Boo Radley. After all this time we tried to get a glimpse of him, the one time we could, we missed it!

Knothole
While walking passed the Radley’s house for a few days Me and Jem have found many things in the knothole. Some of the items we found where a spelling bee medal, a pocket watch, and chewing gum. The other day we found a carving of a boy and girl which seemed to resemble Jem and me. We started to question more about who left these objects here, and their reasons for doing so. So yesterday me and Jem wrote a thank-you note and left it in the knothole. Our curiosity took the best of us, and we wanted to know it was. To our surprise, we later found out that the knothole has been covered with cement! Mr. Nathan Radley said the tree was dying, but he sure didn’t convince me! And another thing, Jem later started crying over this. Maybe it’s a part of growing up as a boy, and he calls me a “girl” when is the one who cries more.

Mysterious Radley
Today was Dills last day before he leaves back home, and Jem and Dill decided they wanted to peek at the Radley’s house. I first taught it was a bad idea, but then they called me a girl, which motivated me to follow them. After making it to the window all we viewed were curtains, and then I noticed a shadow. Suddenly, we heard a gun shoot, and we run back to our house! Jem lost his pants along the way. A group of people including Atticus and Miss Maudie approach us, and they think Mr. Radley was shooting at a black man. The whole town always isolated the Radley’s, and this may be one of the reasons why. Jem later goes to get his pants, but finds them folded and up against the fence. This makes me more curious about the Radley’s!

Walter’s Dinner
While walking back home, Jem invited Walter Cunningham for dinner. He started to pour syrup all over his food! I commented on his actions, which didn’t seem to mean to me. Calpurnia called me over to the kitchen and slapped me, but I didn’t know what I did wrong. Our mom died when I was young, so Cal has always been my mother figure. She taught me how to read, and took care of me while Atticus couldn’t because of the whole lawyer thing. I finished my dinner in the kitchen, and concluded that Calpurnia liked Jem more than me. The Cunningham’s were hit the hardest during the depression, and their family barely gets by. Maybe he eats that way because he grew up with little and isn’t used to having nice meals. Since Atticus told me not to judge anyone unless I walked in their skin, I shouldn’t judge him.

First Day of School
After experiencing life in school, it isn’t what I expected it to be. Miss Caroline Tucker is the root of all my problems. She doesn’t even know how to handle students, and understand the ways of Maycomb. I tried to explain to her how Walter Cunningham can’t accept the quarter for lunch, but she ends of slapping my hand with a ruler! Burris Ewell who is known for his family that only attends the first day of school calls her a “Slut” and she start crying. How is she supposed to teach use when she can’t even control her own feelings and emotions? Not only that, but she also got mad at me for knowing how to read. I love to read and it’s not my fault Atticus and Calpurnia taught me how to do so.
