Today's Public Domain Character: Matilda
[ID: drawing of an elephant sitting on an egg, the elephant has eyelashes and theres some sort of creature looking confused at it to the left. it appears like a screenshot from a magazine. in the lower right corner is a signature of Dr Seuss END ID]
Matilda is an elephant who has motherly instinct to sit on an egg until it hatches. This is an early Dr Seuss story for Judge Magazine published in 1938 called Matilda, the Elephant with a Mother Complex.
The story was never renewed therefore it's another Dr Seuss story that's in the public domain.
The story itself would be reworked into the Horton book "Horton in Horton Hatches the Egg", making Matilda like a proto-Horton.
Horton won't be public domain until 2036 but Matilda already is.

Fin Fang Foom
[ID: Image of an orange dragon ripping apart a vehicle with people shooting at it END ID]
Today's Public Domain Character: Fin Fang Foom
The shapeshifting alien dragon from Marvel Comics first appeared in Strange Tales #89 in 1961. Fin's first appearance however was not renewed 28 years later as was the standard of copyright law at the time. So Fin Fang Foom has been public domain since 1989. This can be seen here.
[ID: image of copyright renewal listings for various issues of Strange Tales but it jumps from number 84 to 100 omitting several ones in the renewal process END ID]
They specifically did not renew issues 85 to 99 so those are all public domain now.
Marvel also doesn't own trademark for Fing Fan Foom, they used to but it has since lapsed, as seen here.
[ID: image from the us patent and trademark office website showing Fin Fang Foom as a registered trademark being abandoned in 2013 due to not being extended]

New interhormonal flag design
I got a request for a new interhormonal flag that is more sensory-friendly than the original design by sproutflags.
Interhormonal is a term for intersex people whose intersex variation is characterized by what society perceives as a hormone "imbalance" - e.g. hyperandrogenism, hyperestrogenism, hypogonadism.
Sensory-friendly on the left. Version with original intersex flag colours on the right.
Hex codes I used in the sensory friendly version are: yellow: #f4db75 purple: 5f2a7e
The icon in the middle of the flag is an abstracted representation of the central common structure used by steroid sex hormones such as testosterone, estradiol, estrone, estriol, progesterone, etc.
These flags are released as public domain (CC0). 💜
Tagging for archival: @intersexflags @liom-archive @radiomogai @varsex-pride 💜

Today's Public Domain Character: "Thrifty Saver" Duck
This character is from a Donald Duck short called the Spirit of '43. This was a WW2 propaganda short about paying your taxes to support the war effort at the time.
The character here isn't really named but has a Scottish accent and is on the side of saving your money and paying taxes.
The character was designed by Carl Barks and is the prototype for what would become Scrooge McDuck.
Because this short was commissioned by the US government it was automatically public domain upon release.

one of the weredogs from my dream. Her name was Buffy. Apparently unrelated to the character.
She kinda looked like a rottweiler but slightly off. More brown patches and less bulky, but not as lean as a doberman.
Very tall when on all fours.
The only one of the multiple weredogs present who I could actually "see".
[ID: A scribbled MS Paint drawing of a weredog showing the front half, on all fours, with a very dark grey coat, with brown on the muzzle, belly, lower legs, brows, and as large spots on the folded ears. The eyes are small and black. She looks to the side with a slight frown. End ID.]
Buffy here, like the rest of the weredogs, were all out of control while transforms and very food-aggressive. Someone had for some reason decided that throwing dog food directly on the floor in the room they were all locked in would be a good idea. I had to try and distract them all with a peice of bacon while I tried to lure them all into correctly-sized crates so they could chill out without trying to kill each other.
this character is public domain because I said so.
edit: here's a scribble of the rest of the scene. me standing on a table with a random chunk of unsliced bacon surrounded by weredogs that I'm trying to distract from killing each other.
for the record they were never going to attack me, just each other. I wasn't afraid of them at all. I just didn't want them to hurt each other.
[ID: An MS Paint scribble showing a stick figure standing on a table, holding a red blob labeled bacon, saying, "Crate time! Lets go in our crates! Crate time!". In the background is a scribble of a large dog crate, and Buffy the weredog above is in the foreground, with fiive other shadowy sillowets of weredogs around the table, one of whom is standing up with their front paws on it, staring at the bacon. Little specks cover the ground to show dog food on the ground. End ID.]

Today's Public Domain Character: Garfield
[ID: image of a chubby cartoon cat with large cheeks END ID]
Now, some caveats no the current iteration of Garfield is not public domain, that belongs to Paws Inc (subsidiary of Nickolodeon). However much like with Mickey Mouse the first iteration of Garfield is public domain, shown above.
As you may remember, youtuber Quinton Reviews uncovered a comic strip that predates Garfield called Jon about Jon's life but Garfield was also a character in it.
The scans show that in 1976 these strips were published without copyright notice which prior to 1978 was required for a work to be copyrighted in the United States.

[ID: Comic strip from January 8, 1976. Jon introduces himself and his cat Garfield twice. Jon looks puzzled trying to describe the strip, and Garfield humorously suggests "try turkey" and "feed me. END ID]
Now Garfield is also a trademark so I wouldn't go call your Garfield comic that if you intend to sell it, but you can use Garfield either as he appears here or ya know, make it a jumping off point to redesign him as we've seen people redesign Mickey Mouse.

More kitties.
The lineart and the art is public domain. Feel free to use for original characters or fanart.
Coloring lineart is a good thing to do with your hands while you listen to audiobooks or presentations
[ID: Eight digital drawings, all using the same simple linart of a fluffy cat sitting and looking towards the camera. The first two show just the linart, as transparent, then simple black and white. The cat has large ears, and a fluffy mane of fur around its neck and down to its belly. The first cat with color is brown, with orange eyes. The mane, the simple horizontal stripes on its legs, and the smaller stripes around its eyes are darker grey-brown, with slightly lighter brown highlights over its eyes, mouth, and inside its ears. The second cat is a tabby with fur in different shades of deep blue, pale yellow eyes, and black stripes. The four remaining cats are recolors of the tabby, with different combinations and shades of yellow, orange, and cream. The first has light yellow fur, with cream legs and lower mane, and dark orange stripes. The second is almost the same as the first, but with more cream on the and the lower half of the face. The third is almost the same as the one before, but has had the stripes changed to gold instead of orange. The last has had the stripes turned to cream, so that the lower legs and face are now solid cream. End ID.]

The second cat is a grey tabby, with light green eyes, darker grey stripes, and a tan belly, with tan markings above and below the eyes, and lighter colored legs. End ID.]
made this lineart while listening to an audiobook. I forget which one lol.

[ID: An MS Paint drawing of the narrator from the book Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. He is drawn against a grey background as a simple square without limbs, in monochrome green. Most of his insides are medium green, with a triangle for a mouth, and a single round eye on one side near the corner, connected with thin straight lines to dark green circles and rings, with one large one in concentric rings of dark, light, and medium green, with a very pale green center. [ID: Four digital drawings, all using the same lineart, with a grey background. The main part of the drawing shows a dragon-like creature with round ears, four legs, and feathered wings sitting facing to the left. Smaller drawings surround this, showing an egg with a wide base and a tapered point, a version of the dragon jumping through the air with wings spread, and a medieval-style version of it flying through the air with very simplified wings. The first dragon is done in the colors of an American bluejay, with a sky blue body, a white face framed with black, and darker blue wing tips with white and sky blue banding. It has a white belly, and dark blue paws. The egg is half white, half blue, separated by a black zig-zag shape. Its eyes are simple, with black irises. The second dragon is half magenta and half purple, separated by a thin, wavy white line. Its eyes are purple with black sclera. The front half of its body is magenta, with the back half purple, and the wings in the reversed colors. The egg is the same, with a thicker white stripe separating the colors. The third dragon is black, with very thin green scribbled on its wings and above its paws, like the outlines of fire. Under its eye is a matching green line almost like a cheetah. The end of its tail, its toes, and inside its ears are yellow. It has a smaller yellow band on its tail before the main yellow stripe begins. Its eyes have black sclera, and white irises. The last dragon is black again, but now with one wing, one ear, and its legs in purple, with small purple and black spots where its shoulders and hips are. Its tail has thin purple zig-zags, and its one black wing has purple bands on the longest feathers. Under its eye is a small row of purple dots. Its eyes have purple irises, and black sclera. End ID.]

More Public Domain magical key swords and cute creature baby forms for them.
You are encouraged to download and use them for anything you want.
These will go on the internet archive with the rest.
Forest Flower came first.
[ID: A digital drawing of a magical living sword named Web Weaver. It is yellow, white, grey, and black, with different sections in different colors. The blade is long, and sharply curved backwards, then forwards again, like the number seven, with a yellow section that is criss-cossed in black to resemble a spider's legs, and a grey section that overlaps this before splitting in two at the end, so that the sword has three points. In the gap created by the curve is a white spider web. The handle of the sword is protected by a large crossguard of six spikes, each grey striped with black, like a sea snake. One of the sections follows the yellow and black base to form the grip of the sword. Another spider web is between two of the spikes, and is labeled, "Webs can be soft, or razor sharp, or solid, at will. At high synergy, webs can create armour for allies." Text on the other side reads, "Strength increases with every enemy defeated within a battle." Above the sword form in the upper corner is a small round creature. It is solid yellow except for a large black spot that acts as its face. It has four skinny legs, and a tail with a web on the end. A stick figure person whose mostly offscreen is shown kneeling down to pat it on the head, showing it is slightly bigger than the person's hand. End ID.]
[ID: A digital drawing of a magical sword named Forest Flower. It is shaped almost like a jagged question mark, and most of it is dark green, with a green-black wavy line down the center, and thorns that form a gradient to bright green on the ends. There are some open roses growing from it, with pale pink outer petals that fade to pale orange and yellow towards the inside, along with one flower bud that's still closed. The handle of the sword is enclosed on both sides, and is brown-green on the center, more like wood than a new growth stem. On the bottom side of the handles are some green leaves. In the upper corner of the drawing is a small creature labeled, "Seed form", in the same dark green as Forest Flower, with a single brighter green eye, two green-black stripes, a long tail that is bright green on the end, and three pointed legs. A stick figure of a human next to a sillowet of the sword and the seed form show that the sword form is large, reaching from the figure's hip to their head, and the seed form is very small, like a kitten. Text reads, "Forest Flower: The more enemies defeated, the more flowers bloom, and provide energy for a beam attack (fire based). At high synergy, the open flowers can (instead) detach and become monsters to fight at your side.". End ID.]
[ID: A digital drawing of two twin magical swords. One is mainly pale yellow with blue highlights, named Firefly, the other is mostly blue with pale yellow highlights, named Lightning Bug. In the upper corner we see their seed forms, as two round creatures with two short legs and long tails with stars on the end. Firefly is yellow with a blue spot, Lightning Bug is blue with a yellow spot. Both swords are in the same shape, but mirroring each other. They are shaped long long sickles, with another small curve on the top. In the center of the larger curve floats a large five pointed star. Behind the smaller curve is a floating crescent moon. The crossguards for each are simple stretched out four pointed stars. The pommel of each is a small diamond shape. These details are in the highlight color for each sword, so blue for Firefly, who is mainly yellow, and yellow for Lightning Bug, who is mainly blue. The handles of both swords are the same simple dark brown. Text reads, "Twins" between the two, then continues, "Grants the ability to see smells. At high synergy grants the ability to manipulate auras and astral project.". End ID.]
[ID: An unnamed magical sword and its seed form, which is oval shaped, with four legs and two crooked tails, with a grey eye and a yellow zig-zag. The sword is shaped like a lightning bolt, with two layers, one purple, one yellow, and a simple grey handle without a crossguard. The seed form has a large questionmark floating above its head. End ID.]

Public domain designs for the narrator and the Sphere from Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, which is public domain and can be read and watched and listened to in many formats for free.
All of the art and designs on this post are public domain. This means they have no copyright, and can be used by anyone for anything. Including making art you then sell. You can repost any you like to shorter posts, just please include the image description that goes along with it.
Image descriptions are in summary, the equivalent of subtitles for blind people.
Here is a link to a masterpost for Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions.
And now for the public domain designs. I made all of these last week and kept forgetting to post.
The narrator first. There's two sets of lineart I was using and I only remembered to make one of them glow.
Batesian mimicry:
Where Flatlanders appear to be completely different creatures when seen above, with eyes that seem to stare directly at you...but it's really just incredibly detailed coloration on their internal organs, evolved to ward off predation from 3D predators that Flatlanders aren't even aware of.

[ID: A digital drawing of a square against a dark grey background, with a thick black border. Inside the square is a squiggly pink shape like an alien fish, with a single purple eye staring upward. Around it are green and orange squiggles, with white triangles around the edges, one of which is the Flatlander's real eye and mouth. End ID.]
Valentines card:

[ID: A digital drawing of a square against a light grey background. He has a black outline that glows white, with a single eye at the upper right corner. His insides are dark purple-red, with brighter red inside a zig-zagging bordern, with five pinks hearts inside the red section, with the largest in the middle. End ID.]
Basic organs:

[ID: A square with a glowing border, with a simple cartoony oval eye on one corner with a narrow pupil like a cat. His inside is light blue, with two large rounded blobs stretching back from his eye to represent a lung and stomach, in pink and purple. Around these are smaller blobby organs in orange, red, and darker red-purple. End ID.]
Same lineart as above, but with patterns for fun:

[ID: The same lineart as directly above, but rather than solid colors, his insides are striped blue and ice blue, and the organs are pale pink with darker pink polka dots. End ID.]
based on very fuzzy memories of a quilt from my Nana Jana's house...

[ID: A glowing square against the grey background, still with the simple oval eye in one corner. This time his inside is colored teal, with many almost symmetrical shapes inside forming a random pattern, each with gaps between them. These shapes are in pale red, orange, yellow, pink, and purple, with a large section in blue filled in with some of them. End ID.]
pretty pattern 1:
[ID: The glowing square, now colored monochrome blue, with a pattern of overlapping lines forming many curved diamonds filled in with blue-black, dark blue, ice blue, and almost white. End ID.]
Needs More Glow:

[ID: The glowing square, now colored in dark brown, with a large pane orange eye and large round pupil, creating a gap at the corner that is filled in with glowing white. His insides are in tan directly behind the eye, with other blogs for organs leading off to the sides in different shades of yellow, brown, and red, including a small heart shape. End ID.]
Geode dude:

[ID: The glowing square, now with his insides dark red on two corners, and the rest filled in with squiggles of ever-lightening blue. On top of this are thin white lines showing the forms of a brain, heart, and organs. The brain is connected by many small tendrils to the line that comes in from the upper corner that is both his eye and mouth. End ID.]
the same but now with squiggles:

[ID: The same white lineart as above for the organs, but filled in solid black, with the backgroud of the square in different shades of blue wavy lines like water. End ID.]
This one should have been brighter but my phone lies to me about colors and I'm too lazy to fix it now.

[ID: The glowing square, now with a simple cartoon eye at the top right corner, with a large white zig-zag crossing the body behind it. One side is pink with purple spots, the other is purple with pink spots. The spots are connected to eachother with simple wavy lines like springs. End ID.]
Fiery rose:

[ID: A square with thick black outlines on a grey backround. The inside is colored in different shades of overlapping pink and red swirls, forming a pattern like flower petals, or fire. End ID.]
sunshine swirl:

[ID: The square with thick outlines, now colored in orange, with a paler yellow orange symmetrical spiral on the inside forming a swirly sun shape in the center. End ID.]
simpler...

[ID: The square with the thick outline, now colored in orange, with a large oval eye, a large purple heart shape, and two small purple circle shapes on either side. End ID.]
simplerer...

[ID: The square with thick outlines, now colored in sea-foam green, with a simple black spiral at the upper right corner for the mouth and eye. End ID.]
Now for The Sphere:
Starlight eyes, with pattern.

[ID: Three digital drawings. The first shows an original design for the Sphere from Flatland, drawn against a light grey background. The Sphere is light pink, with a swirling floral design in purple. He has two large eyes, whose pupils are black and covered in specks of white, like stars. The second image is just the circle with the pattern, and the last image is the pattern itself filling out the whole image. It is symmetrical four ways, with four swirls and points in a cross between a flower and a star. End ID.]
Cyclops with noodly arm-legs

[ID: Two drawings of a sphere against a grey background. He is medium blue, with darker blue, thick swirling stripes, like a mackerel tabby cat. He has a single large oval eye on his face, and from his top rear extend two long limbs, which he holds at his sides in the first drawing showing him from the side, then folds under him like a cat in the second, when he is shown from the front. End ID.]
Stained glass at night:

[ID: An original design for the Sphere, seen from the front. He is covered in an intricate pattern of dark purple, magenta, orange, gold, teal, and royal blue. His eyes are shaped like narrow, upside down teardrops, with dark grey sclera, black iris, and a white, four-pointed star pupil. End ID.]
Froggisphere + lineart for recoloring

[ID: Two images. The first is the sphere drawn as a frog-like creature with a dark orange and yellow spherical body, with dark red eyes with horizontal bar pupils, with dark red thick front legs with yellow webbing, and blue back legs. The second image is the black and white lineart by itself. End ID.]
and last for now:
[ID: MS Paint art from four angles showing an original design for the Sphere. He is monochrome green, with a pale yellow-green face with a greener triangle shaped marking, then a deep green belly and hood. Above and between his eyes are yellow-green swirls, and his mouth is a simple line. His eyes are the same yellow-green as the markings around them, and inside his mouth is lime green. A purple hand filled with white sparkles is scribbled next to him, labeled, "telekinesis". End ID.]
these characters are public domain. You can make any design for them you want instead of doing free advertising for the infamously racist conservative Ladd Ehlinger, who created the 2007 film.

[ID: Eight original designs for the Sphere from the book Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, drawn as circles against a grey background, with a long column of color palettes on one side, being crossed off as the images go. The first two images show two versions of the same design, which is black, with dark blue-green linesart. He has two eyes, and a cat-like mouth with his tongue stuck out. His eyes have black sclera, white irises, and black pupils. Above his eyes are small round eyebrows, and dark green markings like eye makeup. His tongue is dark green as he sticks it out. The second version of this drawing has a repeating pattern of many grey shapes against the black surface.
The second design is black with thin dark magenta stripes, with eight eyes arranged in a half circle, and two mouths with sharp teeth.
The third design is half white and half cyan, with round eyes with heterochromia. The right eye has a white iris and a cyan sclera, and the right has white sclera and cyan pupil. Around each eye are purple triangles pointing outward like a radiation symbol, and pairs of dark red lines between them, radiating out like sound waves. His chin has a stripe of dark green, with two thin red stripes on either side. The fourth design is pale yellow, with large dark blue eyes, and a dark blue chin under a jagged mouth like a beak. Sharp orange and black diamond shapes frame the eyes like fancy sunglasses, with orange, black, and dark blue spots on the forehead. The fifth design is horizontally striped blue, white, and dark grey. In the center is a large oval shaped light red eye with a diamond pupil, with the eye surrounded by smaller light red diamonds, with small heart shapes on the top and bottom.
The sixth design is pale yellow, with large oval eyes with pale blue-green sclera, matching large circles on the cheeks. The irises are the same yellow as the face, with dark blue pupils. Above the eyes are sky blue eye shadow, and in the center of the face is a dark blue triangle like a nose. The mouth is open in a grin, showing a blue tongue and darker blue inside.
The seventh is covered in thin horizontal stripes of pale green, yellow, and dusty blue, with sharply pointed eyes like a stylized cat, with triangle pupils and a jagged iris. The mouth stretches across the whole face, with a small black diamond in the center.
The eighth design is white and teal with diagonal curving stripes, with an animal-like face with sharp teeth, a large round nose like a cat or dog, and rounded diamond shaped eyes with dark blue sclera and green pupils.
End ID.]
More public domain designs for the Sphere, free for anyone to use for anything, and modify however you want. Please either use a public domain design, or create an original design for the Sphere rather than making fanart for the 2007 film by notoriously racist, misogynistic, transmisic, classist bigot Ladd Ehlinger.
pro tip: put a blank line of text at the top of a post before adding images because tumblr's obnoxious and won't let you add a title after you make the post without moving every single picture manually....
Repeating pattern for the 2nd image:
[ID: a repeating pattern of grey shapes against a white backgeoubd. There are rings, circles, pentagons, and lines, either solid or made from dots or thin lines. End ID.]
you can also just scribble and simplify it

Public Domain characters for Palestine: 002
Informational post is here.
I am creating a brand new character to release into the public domain for every $10 donated to Siraj's gofundme, or any other campaign on the list of vetted fundraisers.
_
A canine themed after clouds
[ID: A digital drawing of an original coyote character, drawn in many poses. At the top is a symmetrical drawing of the face, then the coyote's full body as it pounces through the air after prey, then three smaller, more cartoony drawings of it sitting and wagging its tail, curled up asleep, and running to the side. The coyote's body is mainly light blue, with darker blue markings over its eyes and on its ears and shoulders, with white on its forehead and cheeks, and a grey muzzle and belly, with another grey stripe along the back to the tail, bordered by white. The four paws are each a different color: grey and white on the front, and sky blue and dark blue on the back. The eyes are white, and the nose and inside of the ears are powder blue. End ID.]
This character design and art are public domain, which means you and everyone else can use it for literally anything you want.
You can download all of the completed characters here on the Internet Archive.
