WillEl Narrative Mirroring: Presenting Themes of Sexuality
If we consider powers as a means to present themes of sexuality, then looking at Will & El and how they mirror each other in narrative can reveal different angles on this topic and how the two sides of the coin come together to create a balanced whole.
Very very lengthy discussion of sex, sexuality, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse below the cut.
Will and El being different genders is important to their narrative mirroring, because they are displaying the difference between expectations in regards to male and female sexuality. Let's start with El and what her story says about female sexuality.
Layering the subtext behind supernatural elements is both practical and ethical, and I honestly applaud the Duffs for choosing to go this route rather than making it more explicit from the start, and instead sewing in details along the way. It helps keep the story digestible, allowing for a story like this to be shared to a wider audience while also not forcing their incredibly young actors to portray potentially very traumatizing circumstances.
I'm not the first nor will I be the last person to talk about all of the csa coding regarding El, Brenner, and the lab, especially here on tumblr. I was actually sent an anon awhile back linking a blog post back from 2016 that analyzed this exact thing.
"Eleven's interactions with 'Papa' are laden with coercive, coded language, intentionally leading viewers to make sexual abuse connections beneath the surface of the experiments we are shown. Eleven, vulnerable in a thin hospital gown, is told to "go deeper" and to ignore the men watching her perform. She is told the monster wants her, to go farther, "not to turn away from it." This language is intentionally loaded."
Girls are often forced into their sexuality at a young age, usually for the gratification of men
Young El, in hardly a hospital gown, is being forced to utilize her powers for the sake of Papa Brenner and other men in the lab. The sexuality/power connection is being established very early on.
And even once El has escaped the clutches of the lab and seems to find safetyā
And before I have fingers pointed at me, no I am not trying to vilify Mike for this moment nor any of the boys for wanting to use El's powers to find Will. It's more complicated than that. The boys were young, their friend was missing and in danger, and they were excited by the prospect of a real life superhero being able to save their friend. I'll also get into how Mike is a victim of this forced heteronormative relationship much later in the post.
But still, even without meaning to, the boys are reinforcing the role that El is expected to fulfill, which is to use her powers and sexuality in service to the men in her life
Something impressive about that blogpost I linked earlier is the rightful calling out of how gross miIeven is way back in 2016, when the two were considered America's cutest couple by the general public.
"Crucially, in the climax, after Eleven's body is once again used for others, Mike promises her a home, and Eleven shows a glimpse of light, is almost comforted. She'll have a family, she'll have safety. Promise? No, Mike says. She'll have their mother, but while she's wearing his sister's dress he explains she won't be a sister, that he wants Eleven to meet his desire for a girlfriend. How could he possibly understand that more boundaries and a boyfriend is the opposite of what she needs?"
Girls oftentimes do not see many options outside of their sexuality
Starting in season 2 El has two modes of thinking: girlfriend or superhero. Her line of thinking isn't helped much by Hopper, who keeps her isolated from outside world. And like the boys, this is a complicated situation. Hopper is keeping El inside for the sake of her safety, lest the government catch her and lock her up again, and either use her or kill her. Still, this isn't good for her personal development.
Whereas Brenner was the sexually abusive dad who forced his daughter into adult roles at a young age, Hopper is playing the role of the overprotective dad who doesn't want to see his little girl grow up, something that continues in season 3. In his eyes, he is keeping El protected from the men of the outside world who are likely to want to take advantage of her, and keeping her locked in is his way of preventing that. But doing so is damaging to El's psyche in ways he may not realize.
So El is kept locked inside with some of her few windows to the outside world being spying on the boy who wanted her to be his girlfriend, and spending the entire day on the couch watching romantic soaps. Her options regarding freedom are skewed.
When El gets her first taste of freedom and leaves the cabin, she's in girlfriend mode. We know this when we see her go to Mike and she misreads and becomes jealous of his interaction with Max. Now I won't deny that El and Mike do have genuine care for each other, but here she ditches a boy that she hasn't seen in almost a year because he seems to have found another girl to fill that girlfriend role.
Having been hung up on in the void and replaced, El changes trajectory: superhero.
I do want to point out and emphasize the importance of El going to see Terry before this moment. El is not a robot that is programmed for sex and powers. She is very much human, and we see her desires for family and the life she could have lived, which is her motivation to seek both Mama and Kali.
Kali, another woman with powers who had been mistreated like her, offers El an alternativeā use her powers against the men that have hurt her. When El sees that Kali is seeking her power as a means to use them, El leaves to save her friends and family.
I once again want to reiterate again El's humanity and her heart. El isn't returning to Hawkins simply as a means to become Mike's girlfriend and to become a superhero. She is doing so because she wants to save the people that she loves. Still, El's resolve for the season isn't super ideal given her overall arc. She is effectively fulfilling the roles that have been charted for her since the beginning. She learns that she can be a superhero and a girlfriend! Yay!
With danger out of sight, El seems to be spending her time doing the only other thing she thinks she can do, kissing Mike in her room. An activity which is described by Hopper and the rest of the party as being "unhealthy" and "bullshit."
So what is the solution? Completely remove her sexuality as Hopper aims to do?
We now come to my favorite friendship in the whole show, as well as the most important character in El's arcā
Max doesn't suppress El's sexuality or enforce it onto her, but rather is the first person who allows El to explore what she wants, offering her assistance but allowing El to lead the way. Brenner, Kali, Hopper, and Mike have all wanted to shape El into what they wanted her to be. For Brenner, a weapon. Kali, an avenger. Hopper, the perfect daughter. Mike, the perfect girlfriend. Max wants El to be whatever El wants to be. (God I love the elmax friendship so much)
Like I said before, Max does not aim to strip away El's sexuality like Hopper does. Hell, I wouldn't even say that she wanted to keep El from Mike. Hell, Max was even asking El if Mike was a good kisser after El had dumped him. Max is the one who offers to give El her moms Cosmo magazines. She isn't keeping El in the dark about sex and sexuality, but offering her a road map and actual information in order for El to come to her own conclusion about what she wants from it. El can look at pictures of Ralph Macchio and use her powers to spy but also enjoy shopping, listening to Madonna and reading comics.
When El is pushing her powers to find Billy, something that El choses to do of her own volition, it's the girls in her life (Nancy and Max) who advocate for her to lead the way while Mike is the one who wants to control her. And yes, once again the situation is complicated, Mike isn't doing this to be an asshole but out of concern for her safety, but needless to say he isn't beating the controlling boyfriend allegations. And this displays another facet of female sexualityā
Men often feel insecure when women exhibit ownership over their sexuality
Mike, who previously advocated for El to use her powers if it meant helping someone, is now actively pushing against it when it's El in the driver's seat and not him. And maybe Mike was right and El was pushing herself too far. And maybe he was concerned out of guilt for pushing her the first time, but would it also be too out of left field to say that Mike equates his part of his self worth on how much El needs him?

So maybe now Iāll talk about Mike
Mike really isnāt trying to be this malicious, manipulative guy who is using El for sex. Really, heās not. Mike instead is a young boy who is going through some rather tough internal struggles of his own, and unfortunately brings El into it with him.
Mike is enforcing the heteronormative relationship onto himself just as much as he is doing it to El
I personally read Mike as gay and that plays into this analysis. Mike found a girl that he cared a lot for and everyone around him assumed that he must have feelings for her, so he played the role of the straight boyfriend. When I see Mike making out with El in her bedroom, I see a gay boy constantly trying to become attracted to his own girlfriend. Maybe if he keeps kissing her, maybe itāll do something for him.
Keep in mind that Mike believes that thatās what El wants him to be, heās not forcing onto her something that he doesnāt think she doesnāt want. He may have kissed her first, but then El was the one who tried to kissed him at the Byers house. Mike is mistaking Elās own confused feelings for genuine ones.
Being Elās boyfriend was Mikeās way of giving El what she needed, a way to be useful while simultaneously giving him a way to be normal. But what happens when his true feelings are starting to become harder to ignore?

Remember that Mike wasnāt writing āLove, Mikeā when he believed that El was doing okay on her own in Lenora and making new friends. It almost makes me wonder if Mike would have said āI love youā to El if she had told Mike she was in distress.
But then again, we do see El in distress in front of Mike and yet Mike still canāt bring himself to say it. It isnāt until El is quite literally on her deathbed that Mike finally works up the courage.
In season four we have El regressing into her superhero or girlfriend mindset, with a third option addedā monster.
A pinkeoni analysis that mentions Elās superhero/monster dichotomy???? SHOCKER!!
When girls are not seen as sexually desirable, they oftentimes feel monstrous as a result
El doesnāt have her powers anymore, and Mike no longer sees her as worthy of being a girlfriend, which means that she must a monster. This is a thought that is reaffirmed through Elās treatment from her classmates, and later Elās intrusive memories regarding the massacre. The only way El knows to escape this monster label is to regain her powers using NINA. This is what El knows, how to become a superhero. This is how she becomes desirable again.
I think that Maxās distance from El is a good contributing factor. Not the only one, but a main one for sure. El no longer has that guiding force, and there isnāt a girl in Lenora that understands her disposition and seems willing to take her under her wing. Sure she has her new mom Joyce, who is usually on the phone. Or her new brother Jonathan, who is usually stoned. And her new brother Will, whom we see try an give El support only for her to shut him down with āfriends donāt lie.ā
So El goes through NINA, gets her powers back, learns she isnāt the monster after all, oh and her boyfriend can say āI love youā now. And yet, as El realizes at the end, itās not enough.
I promise this post is also about Will too
Now is the part of the post where we shift gears and finally talk about Will. El has more screen time than him, so thereās more to cover. I also felt like discussing her first laid some important groundwork in regards to how Will mirrors her narrative.
El showcased a lot of facets regarding female sexuality. Will covers aspects of male sexuality, but specifically gay male sexuality, which is an important distinction.
What does Hawkins feel about gay men?
Yeah, itās not looking good.
Gay men are oftentimes perceived as predatory and dangerous
Willās sexuality is practically an open secret. Will goes missing, and the townās first thought is that he was taken by another gay man. Troy doesnāt say it directly, but the implication behind his words is that Will was raped and then killed, thus feeling the need to clarify that the man behind it was āanother queer.ā Gay men rape little boys and throw them into quarries, or so the town thinks.
The eighties is also such an important set piece for this narrative because the entire show takes place right in the midst of the Reagan Administration and the AIDS epidemic. A young gay boy dies and its suspected that another gay man killed him. The government is eager to sweep under the rug what actually did it. The anniversary of Will's kidnapping is Reagan's 1984 reelection date to the day.
Heterosexual men are treated differently on the basis of their sexuality
Well, duh. But I did want to highlight the differences between gay Will and his evil-straight-name-twin, Billy.
Billy wears his sexuality proud and openly. Based on Max's dialogue in season 3 we know that he has sex with girls often. In his introduction we are immediately shown girls ogling him. He arrives in town and is instantly liked and regarded. He catches the eyes of the hot moms in town and he's liked by the other guys.
Oh, and he's racist, violent, abusive, and overall a total sack of shit.
We see Billy's sudden rise to popularity in the same season that we see Will's incessant bullying and him being branded "Zombie Boy" by what seems to be the entire town. Even Billy who's been in town for like a day is already calling him "the freak." Will is sweet, kind, friendly, wouldn't hurt a fly, but he's the weird homo whereas Billy is the cool straight guy with the nice butt.
Gay men's sexualities are often suppressed
So now we get to the part that exhibits the WillEl mirroring, as well as some āWill has powersā theoretics. I guess your willingness as a reader to continue forward may depend on your feelings toward Will with powers. I may lose some of you, or maybe I may even swing some skeptics with my explanation. As I say in most of my posts: bare with me.
If El's sexuality and powers are being forced upon her, then Will's sexuality and powers are being forcefully snuffed out.
Let's take a look at Lonnie Byers, in many ways similar to Papa Brenner and in many ways his antithesis. Both abusive fathers with silver hair, Brenner is the obsessive parent who wants his fingers all over his daughter while Lonnie is the distant parent who wants nothing to do with his gay son. Joyce's dialogue "Lonnie said he was queer. Called him a fag." indicates that his homophobia probably has something to do with his distancing. Lonnie's verbal abuse of Will was likely a method of trying to snuff out his queerness. And when that didn't work, he left.
(and if you wanna get theoretical you could say that he had connections to the lab, knew about Will's powers and was trying to get rid of them, but that's just speculative)
A big part of season one is the fact that the entire time, Will was in his own house. He was spending his time running and hiding from the monster that was in his own home, the one that wanted to kill him. And the only time he ever expressed himself, the only time he ever used his powersā
āwas when his loving and supportive mother encouraged him.
But also keep in mind that almost every time Will tries to speak with his mother through the lights, express more of himself and use more of his powers, it usually attracts the presence of the monster. Will continues his cycle of running and hiding until it doesn't work anymore, and we get what is perhaps the most overt sexual assault imagery in the show that even little fifteen year old Robin Pinkeoni picked up on in 2016.
Season one ends with Will experiencing sexual violence, and in season two we see how this trauma is encroaching on his everyday life, as well as being stalked by the same man that took him and shoved a vine down his throat for the sake of reproduction. He follows Will to the arcade. He follows him while he's trick-or-treating with friends. He finds Will at home. Eventually, he finds Will after hours at school where he's able to reenter his body in the second most overt sexual assault imagery in the show.
Where El's sexuality was suppressed in season 2, Will's sexuality was being forced upon
Will is feeling the effects of this assault for the rest of the season. He's finding it hard to sleep, and constantly feels the presence of the man who attacked him, everywhere.
Vecna is possessing Will because he wants to use him as a vessel to control help control his army, and for whatever other powers Will may have. If El never closed the gate, if Vecna had completely taken over Will's body as he originally planned, what would he have done from that point on? Would he have just discarded Will's body, or was there something special about him that he needed?
Will begins to believe that everything people say about gay men is true about him
Keep in mind that at this point Will's only experience and exposure to gay sex is being assaulted twice, all while his father and the whole town is bullying him and telling him that gay men are predators. Will isn't a predator. He isn't dangerous and we know this about him. And yet Will uses the freak label in a negative way.
So it's no surprise given the internal and external that Will is suppressing his sexuality even further.
In season 3 El begins her journey of self-discovery and likes what she finds. Will knows exactly who he is
and he hates it.
Will fucking hates himself bro. He knows he gay. And he accepts it. But he also accepts all of the labels and restrictions that it comes with. I am gay. My sexual desires are dangerous. I can never express and experience love and sex the way I want to.
And maybe there is a glimmer inside of him that sees that what he is is a wonderful thing, that maybe he does deserve better than all the abuse he's endured just for being who was.

And maybe these feelings were easier to pack away when he was younger. Maybe it was easier to say "I'm not gonna fall in love" when you're fourteen, but as you get older and grow into your teenage years...

...maybe your desires are getting harder to ignore.
What happens when you don't die innocent, and you grow up instead?
So we bring it around to season 5
El is a superhero and a girlfriend again. But it's not enough. Something is missing and she isn't fulfilled. Max is missing, and El is going to have to face and overcome her biggest challenge yet, which is completing her journey of self-discovery that started in season 3. She's going to have to put aside the expectations that many have for her and decide what she wants.
Will Byers is back in town. How has the climate surrounding gay men changed since then?

Oh! It's worse now!
Remember, the town believes that the same sodomizing Satanists are the ones behind the recent murders and earthquake. It's gonna be really bad for Will when he gets back.
So now Will is tasked with a challenge that is harder here in Hawkins than it might have been in Southern California. Maybe Will can't change the minds of these religious townsfolk but maybe he can somehow find a way to shift his own way of thinking. Embrace who he is, embrace his powers, and realize that he deserves more than the hand he's been dealt.
So that was... a lot
Analysis mostly over. Here are some of my concluding thoughts.
I know that this is probably one of my longest posts ever. I know that a lot of it feels like reiterating plot points, but that really felt like the best way for me to articulate all of my thoughts on this. A lot of it needs to be backed up with evidence from the show.
Also, sometimes when I sit down to make a new analysis, sometimes I don't make it because I think I have all of the answers, but I make it as a way to try and find answers. To talk through some of my long and complicated thoughts and open the floor to discussion. Even with the length of this post, there is waaaaaaaaay more that can be discussed regarding this topic (some that has already been discussed).
To wrap everything up, I wanna share this screenshot from Reddit, which low-key inspired this entire thing. For context, this was in response to a question asking if people expected to see a Will coming-out scene in season 5.

So, hopefully with this long ass post, I've proven that maybe the show is about the complex effects of one's sexuality in the 80's, actually.

Are we ready to have an honest discussion about Will and Elās dynamic and possible ending yet?
Two characters sharing a similar narrative in this story. How will things end for these two?
It hasnāt occurred to me until recently just how little we discuss these two.
Over the course of the show, the development of Will and Elās co-existence has less to do with their relationship but more to do with Willās character arc.
In the beginning (seasons 1 and 2), Will is so hidden that El takes over. Will āhidesā in the upside down, and is again hidden when he is possessed. El takes the spotlight in his place.
Then in season 3, Will is physically present but in the background. Heās the side character. El is the leader. They barely interact.
In season 4, Will is starting to come out of his shell. Heās still a side character, but heās closer to being on an even playing field with El. Heās not in the background as often, and is actually seen conversing with El, and he even confronts her on her lies to Mike. Which is also foreshadowing his lies to Mike later on in the season.
Iām going to be quite frank: El and Will are not actually very close in canon. The āwonder twinsā idea is beautiful but very fanon. These two had so many opportunities to grow closer, especially since they were separated from the others in California⦠but they just donāt? They both seem lonely and disconnected in the otherās presence. But yet, they are connected another way: El is Willās saviour/protector. She is like his security blanket. I mean this literally (textually), and a sub-textually. Obviously she helps him while heās trapped in the upside down and when heās possessed- making her a textual, and literal saviour.
But⦠what do I mean by a sub-textual saviour? Well, she protects him from having to take the spotlight. He is able to hide behind her in many ways.
For one, she takes the brunt of the bullies in Lenora. Will is able to go around unnoticed even as a GNC guy that he is. Back home at Hawkins, he is, unfortunately, very visible to bullies. Visibly different, visibly gay. But in Lenora? Bullies are too distracted by the girl whoās different instead.
Now when it comes to Willās love life⦠El also is protecting him in a sense. He desires Mike, romantically, sexually, and intimately. Due to the rampant homophobia that surrounds him, these desires scare him. El is a safe barrier from these desires. Will is also able to safely express himself through her.
If El werenāt in the picture, Will may have been more bold in expressing this side of himself to Mike. He may just let his feelings slip out more. Perhaps heād let his eyes linger a tad longer, or heād be tempted to be a bit more tactile with the boy heās overflowing with affection for.
El shields Will from having to confront many aspects of himself. Thatās the problem. Because of her protection, he isnāt able to challenge himself and grow. This is why whenever El saves the day, it never lasts. She merely puts a ābandaidā on the wound. But this wound will grow and fester if the source of the problem is not addressed.
Elās Possible Origin
This is the first time in the entire show that El is mentioned. The context of this sounds like theyāre implying that El also ācame fromā the upsidedown; precisely where Will was at the time.
Now, Iām aware this is a fairly unpopular opinion, but I do believe El was created from Will in a supernatural sense. I suppose in a similar way to how Eve was created from Adam, minus any romantic undertones.
Our very first sighting of El is of her emerging from the forest, barefoot, in a hospital gown, with very little hair on her head, and a limited knowledge of the English language. Not unlike an infant child. Now, please donāt take this the wrong way⦠Iām not implying that everyone with limited language skills are babies, there are many possible reasons for it. But within this show, it is implied that her lack of language skills are due to her experiences within the lab, and lack of experiences outside of it.
I do have to ask though, why do the other ālab kidsā we have seen have no obvious language difficulties? Unless⦠El actually was an āinfantā in a wayā¦
This quote is interesting for multiple reasons. One Iām focusing on here is the mention of life starting that particular day. Of course Iām not referring to Mikeās life starting that day- Iām talking about the person we are shown in this particular shot- El.
Now, I know what everyone is thinking: how does El have memories that predate this day then?
Well, what Iām arguing is that many of her memories could be an altered version of Willās memories. I donāt think itās out of the realm of possibility that his memories could have been transferred to El.

This āfakeā script of the episode Papa tells us that Will recognized Brenner. Thereās a history there! Will likely could not quite pinpoint how he recognized him.
Itās important to note that Will only vaguely recalls aspects of his childhood. Thereās gaps. Just like thereās gaps in Elās memory as well.
Elās Possible Ending
Iāve always been surprised just how little people dig into Elās possible ending in the show. I feel like people are somewhat aware of this possibility but choose not to give it any further thought. Truth is- El doesnāt feel like she belongs anywhere.
I need to remind everyone of this last shot in ST4. Yes yes the couples, we have heard it a million times already⦠but look where El is standing. Sheās on the other side. Sheās in the upsidedown. Where she initially came from. Now, Iām not saying sheāll end up in the current unpleasant upsidedown- she will likely live on in a peaceful version of it. An entirely new environment one that existsā¦
[In Willās mind.]
I do think this is an important foreshadowing quote- but not in the way most people think. They wonāt work together as twins- they will work together as one person. What Iām saying isā¦
They will combine. Just like what this hug visually foreshadows⦠El and Will will become one again.
I can honestly make a whole separate post regarding references made in ST to other media involving two characters being one. Thereās a lotā¦

If you can't take Hosegate don't read this post...
I'm serious...
Okay. I've warned you. This is a post that will end any uhh top/bottom debates...
Trigger warning for somewhat graphic mentions of sex and unfortunately CSA...
So last chance to leave this post.
Still here?
Ok.
So lets break this down.
Mike = the key.
The straw = the key = Mike.
Mike is penetrating a hole...
But the location of where the uhh penetration happens matters just as much.
Russia = El...
Hawkins = Will... the implication of CSA here are just... so sad. Argh. I hate it.
Basically... "Hawkins" is the right "location" for "The Key", but "Hawkins" is still healing from that previous "penetration".
(this is literally the reaction shot and was mine too)
Now. If "The Key" successfully "penetrates" "Hawkins" it'll create...
Likely one we haven't seen before. More on that later...

Mike is named after famous theoretical physicist

John Archibald Wheeler
I reference this in my art here if youāre interested in checking it out.
We really should talk about this moreā¦

John Wheeler is known for his work on promoting Einsteinās theory of general relativity. Mike has art on his wall titled āRelativityā by M.C. Escher based on the theory.
John Wheeler is also known for popularizing the term āblack holeā. Stephen Hawking even referred to him as āthe hero of the black hole storyā.
He has also done a lot of work on quantum mechanics. Specifically, he has theorized that time may work much differently on a quantum scale. Wheelerās Delayed-Choice Experiment, and the One-Electron Universe are examples of theories in which he postulates if subatomic particles can essentially ātime travelā.
While I know Mike is ānot a dogā, he does share something major in common with the dog in Back to the Future (who happens to be referenced in ST). Lol.
Anyway⦠much to think about.

Lonnie Byers
why he is far more significant in Stranger Things than we are led to believe...

āThe scariest monsters are human beings and what we will do to each other.ā
This post is very much inspired by @/kaypeace21's post on Lonnie from 2021. Just so you guys know, kaypeace21 theorized Byler LONG before most of us. She has a pretty good track record for predicting aspects of Stranger Things. This post will include some of her brilliant finds and will add even more evidence that was introduced to us in ST4 and TFS.
Warning: this post discusses some VERY dark and mature themes. I will allude to dark stuff at first but will leave the darkest stuff below the cut.
CW: Ab*se, CSA, substance use, DV...
The name Lonnie (nickname of Lawrence/Laurence) has two specific relevant meanings:
Lion and Oak tree. x

(Some symbolism examples: Nancy compares the Demogorgon (also titled: Deep Father) to a lion in ST1. In ST3, Holly notices trees (what looks like oak trees...) and looks frightened.)
For every mention of trees and predatory cats/lions I will add š³and š¦ emojis respectively.
Keep both of these in mind as both predatory animals/cats and (creepy) trees are common occurrences within Stranger Things. I will touch on both of these throughout the post.
Anyway, lets start with the surface level stuff we know then I'll touch more on the darker subtext.
So, who is Lonnie Byers?
When we first hear the name Lonnie, he is brought up as a potential suspect by Hopper in Will's disappearance.
Joyce is quick to dismiss him as a suspect but does give us some important information about his character:
Lonnie "used to say [Will] was queer. Called him a fag." Whether or not he would say this to Will's face... he's obviously, not a great guy or father.
Joyce and Lonnie are divorced. She hadn't heard from him in about a year.
He doesn't like cops.
In The First Shadow, we actually learn that this is not the first time Lonnie is seen as a suspect in a case. (spoilers in next paragraph)
Lonnie was mistaken for Victor Creel and he was investigated for the animal murders by Hopper. This was not just a random choice, remember, Lonnie's name means Lion as in the predatory animal š¦. Jonathan also told us that Lonnie made him hunt rabbits. This is a major hint! So, Victor Creel is innocent, and near the end of the play, Henry tells Joyce that she's so close yet so far from the truth (I'm paraphrasing). He's absolutely right though, the truth was right under her nose but unfortunately she doesn't see it (yet).
The fact that they made a very obvious comparison of Lonnie Byers to Victor Creel, the suspected murderer of his entire family... lets just say... it tells us A LOT.

Anyway, back to learning about Lonnie in season 1.
Joyce tries to reach out to Lonnie about Will, but is unsuccessful. He doesn't pick up the phone. His girlfriend does and says he's unavailable.
In a flashback, we hear Joyce and Lonnie argue about Lonnie not coming to play baseball with Will. She says she's "so sick of [his] excuses" which obviously means he has frequently made false promises/let Will down. He obviously does not prioritize Will.
To further prove that point, we later literally see him close Will off as he hammers wood right in the entry way for Will to return. The comic about Will's time in the UD gives a heartbreaking look into Will's POV. He cries to his father to not shut him out, but Lonnie ignores Will's cries...

Paralleling El's flashback to when Papa locked her in the dark room and ignored her cries... (the existence of that scene and many other flashbacks with El and Papa make me strongly believe that El's memories of Papa are altered version of Will's memories of Lonnie... I won't go into that much though in this post).
Just look at that obvious bright light in the closet behind Lonnie. Same light Will stared at prior to vanishing⦠That accompanied with Elās flashback of being locked in a room alone, paints a rather grin image. Heās trying to shut Will out.
Just from these clues so far, heās not a good father.
To stay or to goā¦

(a bear (Will) vs. a tree branch š³)
If you pay close attention, youāll see many references to this song within the show⦠and they even specifically made the association between a father and son when Steve called Dustin ādadā. Which father and son pair are the most associated with the song? Will and Lonnie⦠as that song first played in the scene where Lonnie tells Joyce he wonāt be taking Will to baseball practice.
We can tell from these moments (and more) that dad wants Will to stay put and not go anywhere. We even have Dustin (the one symbolizing ādadā) telling Will to āget back here⦠Iām going to kill you.ā Those were also the last words spoken to Will before he vanished. This is significant.
Suspicious Evidence...
When we see Jonathan visit Lonnie's looking for Will, there's a small bike behind him.

We know Will left his bike in the forest š³ when he vanished. Why does Lonnie have a child's bike?

Demogorgon also means "The Deep Father". I talk more about this here. Will is telling Mike in code that his father "got [him]".
Joyce is yelling at "Papa" that he took her son away.
The line of God (aka a father) taking "someone so young, so innocent" at Will's funeral with the focus on Lonnie.
In TFS (spoiler), Lonnie admits to stealing baby Jesus from the Nativity scene.

(GIF credit to @/kaypeace)
This specific shot tells us what we need to know. Lonnie is responsible for Will's disappearance. He is hammering the nail in the wall and it directly cuts to Mike representing the gate being opened with a pencil and paper. Lonnie is the reason the gate opened in the first place! Now, when I say that I donāt mean he literally opened the gate, I mean that the a*use he inflicted onto Will had caused all the monsters within the show and the creation of the Upside Down. Bold claim to make, I know⦠but bear with me here. As I will now go into the darker cluesā¦
Lonnie's "Type"
Joyce refers to Lonnie's girlfriend as a "teenager". This is significant! Because (spoiler for TFS), Lonnie dated Joyce when he was 25 and she was 17!
This is a pattern for him. He not only preys on animals š¦, he preys on teenagers... and it gets even worse.

Look, the implications here are, unfortunately, very clear. We see Lonnie look at Jonathan walking away, then he looks down at the photo of Will with the dialogue "He's kinda cute, hmm?"
"Maybe I'll trade you in for the younger model?" is said while Lonnie looks in Jonathan's direction.
Trading someone for someone younger. He likes them young.
He is a predator. You may not want to believe the truth here but as we know with this show... everything is intentional.
Letās continue on with even more disturbing cluesā¦
When Joyce and Hopper find Will in the UD, he is in a library (a place of archives, of documented history) And he appears like this...
He's being violated... by the vines. Vines, that grow on trees. š³Lonnie means oak tree... This is a representation of documented history that he had been se*ually assaulted by... the tree with vines... Lonnie. Also if you look into the full lyrics of āShould I Stay or Should I Goā⦠letās just stay itās disturbing how that song is associated with a young boy and his fatherā¦
Also... keep in mind that the vines are preventing Will from speaking. Will is being silenced as well.

Next season we see the MF force itself into Will. Again, another violation, this time by the MF (yes- the mother fucker, that is what Lonnie is after all). This was done on a field. A baseball field. We know Lonnie is associated with baseball.
And again, the MF (father) is silencing Will...
In this scene in ST3, we get yet another reference to Will being violated in the past. We are shown a flashback of the MF possessing Will, and we are given the comparison of non-consensual sex and the gate/door opening. We know this due to the term āpenetrationā being used in relation to opening the gateā¦
Murray states "the door had been opened once" while we are shown Joyce with a look of horror on her face. "It was still healing", as experiencing that does require a lot of healing.

āLarry the construction guyā. Larry is a nickname for Laurence. Lonnie is another nickname for Laurence. This line by Jonathan has multiple meanings.
Lonnie is in Will's head.
āStuck up your noseā. Lonnie is, again, represented as violating Will.
When Jonathan confronts Lonnie we can see this Evil Dead poster behind them. Not only is it very visible but⦠Lonnie draws attention to it. This poster is significant! This woman is being attacked and choked by a tree. š³ The tree goes inside her⦠it violates her.
Lonnie wants Jonathan to take down the poster. This is important. He wants Jonathan to stay silent. More on this laterā¦
If this isnāt enough symbolism to convince you, check out kaypeace21ās post where she goes in even more depth around the music/musicians Jonathan references, and even more background details that add to this. They intentionally painted the picture of him being a s*xual a*user, as the existence of all these clues all add up to the same conclusion. A very uncomfortable truth.
Dad, youāre choking me

Speaking of being choked, ever notice how this is something that seems to occur frequently within the show?
That Mike and Ted moment in particular stands out because it occurs right after the Jonathan and Lonnie confrontation with that Evil Dead poster in the background (being choked by a tree š³)⦠so the ādadā doing the choking here is absolutely Lonnie.
Yet another case of being silenced as well...
The Trunk

Probably the most concerning moment to many on the surface. Remember how ādadā said ādonāt go⦠anywhereā and the symbolism of him shutting Will out? Well, letās just say that itās not a stretch to think he put Will in a trunk before.
Itās also worth noting that when Billy opens the trunk to see a tied up Heather we get a flashback of him choking her. This William is likely replaying the ab*se Will went through⦠he was possessed by the MF (father) after all.
Also, remember in ST2 they tied Will up and he shouted several times āwhy am I tied up?ā Yeah⦠Also all those being suffocated referencesā¦
Substance Use
While everyone can struggle with substance use and it doesnāt make them a bad person, the use of substances causes the lowering of inhibition. āLowering inhibitions meansĀ reducing restraints against behaviors that might normally seem inappropriate, dangerous, or taboo.ā x This is why people under the influence of alcohol, and harder drugs can become more aggressive and a*usive.
When we see Lonnie's house, we see many cans of beer. We also see him drinking while he visits Joyce. He also encourages Joyce to drink too to help her "think straight". Hmm... strange choice of words I must say.
Now, I donāt think Lonnie just has an alcohol problem, I think he also has a stimulant use disorder. Stimulant = drugs like cocaine and crystal meth.
Kaypeace21's post goes into the details of the possible crystal meth use and how when Will was possessed by the MF, he was showing symptoms of a child on this specific substance (sweating, trembling, seizures, etc).
Another stimulant use reference, but cocaine this time. Remember Larry = Laurence = Lonnie.
There are many subtle references to drug use throughout the entire show from Papa forcibly injecting Terry Ives, El, Henry etc, to Reefer Rick and Eddie and plenty more.
Although we don't have much information on this, I think it is implied that Lonnie is a drug user. Not only does this mean that his impulses were less inhibited, but this also puts into question the possibility of further neglect. The Byers are not rich by any means, and if Lonnie is so focused on obtaining substances... that leaves barely any money for anything else.
"He made me do itā¦"
So as Jonathan told us, Lonnie made him kill a rabbit. The lion š¦ forcing his offsprings (lion cubs) to hunt and kill, just like him.
This is something we have seen quite frequently within the show:
El being forced to harm a cat by Papa
Henry being forced to harm a rabbit while influenced by the MF (father)
(In TFS) Henry being pressured to harm animals by Papa
Will saying "He made me do it" in reference to the monsters attacking (he being the MF = father)
Billy saying "He made me do it" (again he being the MF = father)
D'art killing Mews
What's interesting to note is the fact that many characters are associated with rabbits and/or other small animals.
This likely also connects with the reoccurring theme of survivor's guilt within the show. Specifically, of the survivor blaming themselves for the death of others.
Max blaming herself for Billy's death
Mike blaming himself for El's death
El blaming herself for the death of the lab kids
Nancy blaming herself for Barbās death
Lonnie forced Will to cause harm and/or blamed Will for the harm caused. We know how Will is, he's incredibly sensitive. This absolutely would weigh on his conscience.
Whereās mom in all of this?
We know she has been working a lot, but there could also be something else going on here. Could the allusions to her mental health issues come into play here as well? It's possible...
During "the source" scene with Billy's memories, Billy cries out because his mother is gone. Keep in mind, Billy's memories parallel Will's A LOT (the baseball, father calling him a "pussy"... etc), and the song "William" plays during this whole sequence.
It is likely that Joyce was separated (or emotionally distant) from Will for some time in the past...
Domestic a*use
To make the assumption that Will had witnessed DV between his parents would not be a stretch. We have already seen Lonnie and Joyce fight and it was not pretty.
We also see Billy's father slap his mom hard in the face (like I said, Billy's memories parallel Will's memories...)
We also have seen Lonnie gaslight Joyce already, trying to make her think she's "crazy" and we've seen them fight about Will and finances. This was no stable household for a young child...
Fear of the Truth

It isnāt discussed enough, but thereās a reoccurring theme of the fear of telling the truth. And no this isnāt just about coming out of the closet.
This is especially true when it comes to telling mom the truth.
El repeatedly preventing the boys from telling Mikeās mom whatās going on⦠specifically about the ābad menā. She fears the repercussions (demonstrating a gun pointed to her head⦠implying a threat⦠āIām gonna kill you!ā).
Mike and Nancy unable to tell their own mother whatās going on with them.
Jonathan unable to tell Joyce about āwhatās going on with [him]ā.
Lonnie telling Jonathan to take down the poster showing a*use and telling him to ābehaveā for his motherās sake⦠heās trying to silence Jonathanā¦
Nancy telling Mike āno more secretsā
Joyce telling Will he needs to talk to her (about what happened with the MF)
Dustin hiding Dāart from his mother/the kids in general hiding the supernatural stuff from their parents
Billy unable to explain to Karen what had happened to him
Max telling Billy he needs to talk in the sauna scene
and plenty moreā¦
Will frequently communicates in a code. We see this several times:
"It was a seven, the demogorgon got me"
Communicating through the lights
Drawing pictures instead of talking/explaining
Morse code
"Sometimes it can be scary to open up like that. To say how you really feel. Especially to people you care about the most. Because what if... what if they don't like the truth?"
The painting itself
The painting speech... using "El" instead of himself
Usually a*use of a child is not immediately obvious. Parents often think that they will immediately know if their child has been a*used, but often, the signs stay hidden. Remember that most kids are a*used by adults they know. X
Some of the common reasons why child stay silent:
They worry about being blamed, or mistakenly believe they caused the abuse.
Their a*user has threatened them in some way.
They know and maybe even feel close to their a*user and don't want to hurt them.
They think no one will believe them or help them.
Babies and children under 5 years oldāwho make upĀ nearly 40%Ā of maltreated kidsāmay not have the words to explain what happened to them, making it difficult or even impossible for them to ask for help. X
This is just important information that everyone needs to know. Child a*use isnāt obvious, the kid may even seem alright with spending time with their a*user⦠this does not mean the a*use doesnāt exist. That is a very harmful claim to make.
When it comes to a*use, especially child a*use, we must be vigilant. Because the child likely wonāt tell us but they will show us the signs.
Some signs to look out for:
Any sudden, continued change in behavior.
increased anxiety
unexplained injuries x
Repressed memories

Iām just going to outright say it: the NINA plot line is important because it tells us a lot about repressed traumatic memories.
āOur brains have a defence mechanism in place to protect it from bad memories. You buried these memories long ago.ā
Then in the last episode of ST4, we learn something VERY telling about Will.

Remember⦠Larry = Laurence = Lonnie.
They basically told us that Will only vaguely remembers Lonnie. This is an incredibly important clue to what Will is going through. Willās trauma was so intense that he has been repressing the memories of his own father.
In ST5, this is absolutely going to be an important aspect to his arc and to the story as a whole. Will must come face-to-face with his traumatic past. Unlocking those memories will be key to finally defeating the monsters for good.
The Destroyer of Worlds
So, Iāve mentioned this many times before, but Will is compared to āLittle Boyā the first atomic bomb. (Click here and here for posts about it).
He is a bomb that went off on Nov 6, 1983, freezing time, and forever changing Hawkins. J. Robert Oppenheimer was the creator of the real atomic bomb, and he was known as the āFather of the Atomic Bomb.ā He was also known as āThe Destroyer of Worldsā. Because Will is āLittle Boyā and Lonnie is his fatherā¦
Lonnie is The Destroyer of Worlds. A perfect term for someone who inflicted such horror onto an innocent child. Because trauma like this has an incredibly profound effect on a young mind, in more ways than you can imagine. His actions are the catalyst for the chain reaction of this entire show. He pushed over that very first domino.

Why is all of this evidence so hidden? Why do we barely know anything about Willās past with Lonnie? Because⦠instead of telling us his past, theyāve been showing it to us through the horrors. You have to look very deeply into the show to see the truth start to add up like a puzzle. There are many themes that reoccur/are alluded to within the show for a reason. And itās all from one single source.
Demogorgon is The Deep Father, MF is the mother fucker (father), Papa is father, and it was Vecnaās father who was convicted of the murders.
It was father this whole time.
