How Bernie Helped America’s Most Exploited Workers When No One Else Listened

A five-minute short documentary consisting mostly of interviews with an immigrant worker and mother, Udelia Chaluta. In the ad, she talks about joining the protests organized by the Campaign for Fair Food in 2010. “There were cases of bosses abusing workers,” Chaluta says.

She highlights other abuses and explains how by raising the price of tomatoes by just one cent, the workers would receive a fairer wage for themselves and those they support. In the powerful moment that gives the ad its name, she insists the companies exploiting them don’t recognize the damage they cause.

“At night I would cry sometimes, because what you earn isn’t enough,” she says. “It affected my children too, because I sometimes didn’t have enough to buy food. They don’t understand what we have to go through, because… we have families.”

She goes on to talk about Sanders’ work in helping the Immokalee Workers, who went to Washington to testify during a Senate committee hearing about abusive labor practices after visiting the workers in 2008. “Bernie Sanders took interest in the lives of the workers and wanted to hear their struggles,” she says. “Politicians never came to Immokalee, he didn’t keep silent about what he witnessed here,” she continued.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers signed a Fair Food Agreement with Trader Joe’s, a victory achieved through a months-long campaign against the tomato industry. CIW has enjoyed victories against Whole Foods, Taco Bell, and will target Publix next with a six-day protest beginning on March 5th.

The ad ends with a Sanders quote about Immokalee workers. “But how many more Immokalees are there? How many fields or factories are there? We have to ask ourselves ‘who benefits from this exploitation?’ And to understand that it is not only the Immokalee workers who suffer, but every worker in America, because that pushes us in a race to the bottom.”
