Fanfiction Summary Tips and Tricks

Or, Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I Started Writing Fanfiction

So, you're ready to post your fanfiction! It's edited, it's beta'd, it's looking cute. Good to go. And just as you're about to hit 'post' on that sucker you realize--

I still have to write the fucking summary.

Fear not friends, this is a trial that all fanfiction authors go through. And as someone who has been reading fanfiction for over 15 years (and someone who still struggles with summaries), I have compiled some tips that may help you conquer the fear of summaries once and for all.

Why should you listen to me? Idk, I'm not an authority figure! Take what you want from this, leave the rest behind.

1.) Leave all self deprecation OUT of the summary!

Summaries are supposed to be the hook, the thing that gets people to click on your story that you've worked so hard on. Don't start off with telling those readers that 'you suck at summaries'.

Trust me, just delete this.

2.) Leave author notes in the notes section

It's there for a reason! The summary section is for your story. Talk to your readers after you've got their attention. You'll get to chat with them in the comments too!

3.) CHECK SPELLING/GRAMMAR!!!

Readers can be pretty vicious about this. One little typo can mean the difference between a loyal reader, and someone scrolling away for their life. Read your summary out loud! Or, if you don't trust yourself, ask a friend!

4.) Avoid adding unnecessary questions

Questions like "Will this happen to blorbo, or will blorbo be able to figure it all out?" are also unnecessary. Readers have read the summary, they have a pretty good idea of what's coming. Plus, if you have a plot twist, this question can kind of undermine what you've got going on.

5.) Use the character's name

I promise you don't need to describe anyone as 'a certain brown eyed boy'. I swear to you.

6.) Tell us what your character wants!

What's the goal for blorbo? What's standing in the way? Is it internal, external? Let us into blorbo's head. Crack that noggin open.

7.) What's the setting?

Now, obviously tags can help a lot here. But if it's an intricate world, you're going to want to give the readers a bit of a taste. Let us know what this new world you've crafted is about. What's the tone?

8.) The HOOK

What makes your fic stand out? What's different? If you're using a trope, what's your take on it? Think of the hook like a little cliffhanger, a bit of information that's going to push someone over the edge.

9.) When in doubt, quote it out

Still a little stuck? No worries! The tried and true method of writing a summary is just use what you've already got-- a quick copy and paste from your fanfiction directly into the summary box. Something a little bit out of context, a little taste of what's to come, and what your voice sounds like. You can't miss!

Aaaaand that's it! My little list of tips. There are probably more out there-- and it's not a bad idea to keep an eye out for these. You'll improve just by reading more, something that never ceases to amaze me.

THOMA plays basketball. He always makes eye contact with you just before hitting the rim, drenched in sweat and shaking his hair as he dunks his water bottle over his hair and god is it endearing to see him miss the rim because he’s too busy looking at you. Himbo tbh

DILUC drives you to school and it’s god do I want to WVAKKdndnsms the way?? He holds the stick shift?? Like sir that could be my throat pls. I’m not even kidding. He’s so cool when he arrives at school, and he hits the shit out of the wheel to honk at Kaeya to scare the shit out of him. Sibling goals ⁉️

DILUC has thick thighs. Muscles that fucking squish together when he sits. God do you wanna bite them because gahdamn!2@2 God he doesn’t really care for designer shit but he just dresses up comfortably, BUT STILL LOOKS GOOD BECAUSE ITS DILUC YKWM and when he wears sweatpants. he did not blush because of those whimsical emotions. he blushed because of defeat, he sighed because of defeat. he would consider it a dissatisfaction of your shallow words—there must be more words to just… pretty.

you're an intellectual, someone who studies a lot and works hard, and he really admires you for what you do

never bothers you when you're busy, but when he's feeling clingy sometimes will start bringing your favorite food and drinks and then sitting down beside you to watch you

always misses you when you're at work, but understands the long hours and never blames you because he's often gone for even longer periods of time when he's travelling with beidou

but kazuha is worried for your safety sometimes, you're often so engrossed in your work or daydreaming about something you've read that you aren't aware of your surroundings

and when he's not around, he can't be having you get injured

on the weekends when you're not as occupied with work, kazuha teaches you how to use a sword. he makes a bamboo blade and says that way, you won't injure yourself if you two spar

always goes gentle on you, flowery praises leaving his lips like a line of beautiful poetry

adjusts your positioning patiently and never scolds you, no matter how idiotic you act or how badly you're wielding the weapon

whenever he sees you in a position of being potentially attacked, he'll immediately become more clingy and stick by your side, softly reminding you that you have to be careful, you have to be more observant

loops your arms together or at the very least, has a hand on your back or his pinky intertwined with yours, and will absentmindedly have his hand on you no matter what to make sure you're still there

if you seem exhausted after sparring, he'll let you recline against him and then play you a little tune

"you did so well today, my dear, why don't i make you some lunch now?"

teaches you by practical means, literally just wants the thrill of sparring and then pinning you to the ground or to a wall later while kissing you with that stupid grin on his face

offers to teach you how to wield every weapon, and is surprised when you're most gifted at using a bow- he swears your aim is even better than his

sometimes when he notices you zoning out or partaking in an activity with your guard down, he'll jump up behind you and snake his arms around your waist, or he'll pick you up and press kisses all over your face

"shouldn't let your guard down!" uh i definitely did not steal his voiceline

in reality though, always worried that someone will harm you, or that you'll unintentionally get in harm's way. after all, he is a harbinger, and he's in a dangerous line of work

childe doesn't want someone to attack you or endanger you while he's away on missions, it's his greatest fear- so he sends some fatui underlings to stalk watch over you while he's gone

sometimes you accidentally beat them up because you feel like someone's watching you (lol) but when childe finds out about this, he's strangely overjoyed and excited by the fact that you can defend yourself and have such quick reflexes

very touchy when teaching you how to wield a bow- his hands are literally all over you, resting on your hips, grabbing onto your waist, his chest is pressed against your back as his breath ghosts over your neck

loves whispering teases into your ear as he helps you. sometimes he goes a little too far with the jokes, and you start to feel a little insecure because you feel as if he's so much more superior than you. when childe notices this he'll immediately lift you off the ground and praise you
