New Guitar Lesson! (AKA weird faces alert). Crafting memorable & hookey guitar solos is waaaay trickier than you’d think. Keeping it simple yet engaging can be tough. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ My new single WANNA LOVE uses thematic improvisation. I absorbed it through jazz legends like #SonnyRollins and his technique is still employed by more modern day guitar heroes like @TreyAnastasio and sometimes @JohnMayer.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In Bb, I build a super simple theme around the tonic and elaborate by adding one or two notes at a time as the song unfolds. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The progression here is I-iii-vi-IV. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ You know what I’d love? Guitar Lessons are back! Wanted to talk about the guitar riff in my new song REAL LOVE⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve found it’s really tricky to turn off the “educated guitar player” in me and just write a super hooky & simple guitar riff for a pop song. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ With Real Love, the riff is built on the two chords, F & Bb major. The first notes are the tonic & octave (F) and move to the suspended forth and third of F (Bb & A). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Then the riff repeats itself backwards over the Bb chord. The Bb and A notes become the tonic and seventh before the riff resets itself to the beginning.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Playing it for you here (you can hear the recording at the link in my bio).
