The Triple Goddess

Introduction

The Wicca acknowledge a supreme divine power, unknowable, ultimate, from which the entire universe sprang. Wiccans, however, link with this force through their deities. In accordance with the principles of nature, the supreme power was personified into two basic beings: the Goddess and the God. (...) Deity is twin, consisting of the Goddess and the God. [Cunningham, 2004.]

The union between the Horned God and the Triple Goddess is a supreme divine power, and a supreme divine power is consisting of the God and the Goddess. This is similar to Taoist philosophy where there is a plurality in singularity and vice versa. However, in my belief, a supreme divine power is not really an active principle - it is more like an energy. On the other hand, the God and the Goddess are active principles, so that is why the emphasis is being put on them.

That being said, the question "What about the other deities people talk about?" rises... Again the answer would be the same as in the previous paragraph: there is singularity in plurality, and vice versa. This could be similar to the Trinity in the Christianity, where there are three persons but one principle, or the God. In Wicca, however, all gods are The Horned God and all goddesses are the Triple Goddess, instead of the God. As a conclusion, we could say that Wicca is duotheistic in the theory and usually polytheistic in the practice.

Characteristics of the Triple Goddess

The Triple Goddess is a female principle in Wiccan theology. She is seen as a deity with three aspects: a maiden (waxing moon), a mother/queen (full moon) and a crone (waning moon). She is connected to the Moon, the Earth and nature, waters, emotions, motherhood and magic. She is the mother nature, a great potential, fertility, sea or river, soil, love, transformation and great wisdom.

In the nature, we can see her as it follows; On Yule she is the mother who gives birth to the Horned God. On Imbolc she is transformed into a maiden, who is going to meet with the Horned God for the first time. Ostara is the time when the Triple Goddess is still in a form of a maiden, getting closer to the Horned God. Beltane is time of the sacred union between the two, and she is in the aspect of a young woman. Litha is the peak of her reign, together with the Horned God, and we can see her as a mother or as a strong and wealthy queen. On Lughnasadh her power starts to wane, while Mabon is the time when she enters in her phase of a crone, giving us wisdom and bringing balance in our life. On the Samhain she is the crone who weeps for the Horned God, who died, and a grandmother who gives us an advice for the next year.

In Irish mythology, Brigid is the daughter of the Dagda and had two sisters also named Brigid and is part of the Tuatha de Danann, the supernatural Irish race. The three sisters made up the triple aspect of the one goddess: Brigid of the hearth, Brigid of the forge and Brigid of Inspiration. She is a goddess of spring, fertility, family, the hearth, childbirth, fire, blacksmiths, scholars, physicians, prophets, healing, poetry, occult knowledge, and justice. She was said to be born at sunrise and is often depicted with solar rays coming out of her head, making her one of the Irish solar deities alongside Lugh. It is said that wherever she walks four leaf clovers and flowers will grow. She also created the tradition of “keening” when her son Ruadan died in battle, a song-like wail used by women at funerals. In some cases she is also the goddess of sacred wells, springs and healing waters.  

History

Her name comes in different spellings like Brig, Brighid, Brigit, or Brigid but it means “Exalted one” or “Fiery arrows”. She is a goddess of Pre-christian Ireland but versions of her are found all over Europe; she has ties to Brigantia, a warrior goddess of the Brigantes tribe of Britain. She was a beloved goddess of the Celts and has survived through centuries including the Christianization of Ireland and the rest of Europe where most traces of Druidism and Paganism were forgotten. The people of Ireland loved her so much and refused to let her be demonized by the church -like the rest of the gods- that they converted her into a saint known as St. Brigid of Kildare. There are also three rivers named after her one in Ireland, Wales and England: Brigit, Braint and Brent.The river that runs through Wales is known to have healing properties.

Imbolc

Also known as Brigid’s day, Candlemas or St. Brigid’s feast, Imbolc is one of the four fire festivals in Celtic paganism and celebrates the return of spring. Since Brigid is the goddess of spring and was said to go away during the winter, people would light a candle in honor of her return. Offerings of milk, bread, and corn cakes were set out and a seat at the dinner table was left open for her presence.  Cows and sheep were seen as sacred to the goddess because they would provide milk for the town during the cold months and they would give birth around Imbolc. This festival celebrated the Maiden aspect of Brigid and young women would carry corn dollies dressed in white which represented the goddess. The women would also dress in white and attend a special feast for Imbolc where young suitors could mingle with the ladies. Imbolc is a time of fertility, cleansing and the light returning after a long winter.

Hawthorn

Hawthorn (Lore, medicine, magic, and mystery)

Hawthorn is a deeply magical tree and is one of the three trees at the heart of the Celtic Tree Alphabet, the Faery Triad, 'by Oak, Ash and Thorn'. Traditionally Beltane began when the Hawthorn, the May, blossomed. It is the tree of sexuality and fertility and is the classic flower to decorate a Maypole with. It was both worn and used to decorate the home at Beltane.

Birch

Magickal properties of Birch

Birch is regarded as a feminine tree and Deities associated with Birch are mostly love and fertility goddesses. 

It is one of the first trees to show its leaf in Spring. Eostre/Ostara, the Celtic goddess of Spring was celebrated in festivities and dancing around and through the birch tree between the Spring Equinox and Beltane.

Birch twigs were traditionally used to make besoms (a new broom sweeps clean). Maypoles were often made from birch and birch wreaths were given as lover's gifts.

Rowan

A tree of protection and healing. Branches of Rowan were placed as protection over the doors of houses and barns at Beltane to protect from increased Faery activity as they woke from their winter slumber. 

Sprigs were worn for protection also. Rowan berries have a tiny five-pointed star on the bottom reminiscent of the pentagram.
