His clothing is of a casual sort--housewear, really--and his hands are settled in his lap as he just enjoys the sun, no drink in his hand (surprisingly enough).

Just as it occurs to him that his behaviour is similar to a big, old cat, the silence is broken by ever-familiar footsteps and the eventual thud of the girl seating herself beside him.

Though he's a bit older now, he's still ornery, so he doesn't give his granddaughter the response she's looking for immediately. Instead, he remains silent for an eternity more (which was all of perhaps thirty seconds in reality, but children had short attention spans) before heaving a heavy sigh and turning his gaze to her.

“So. Your old man tells me that you’ve really been kickin’ some ass lately. Wanna talk to me ‘bout it?”

Why yes, he is her favorite grandpa. She’s just like her momma, more than happy to play favorites and even happier to let everyone know who it is she’s picked. 

And she’s finally old enough to have begun her training. Still young enough to sit on grandpa’s lap, though. Which she normally do, except today is extra special. She’s finally getting things right with her training.

Chocho plops down next to him, her little legs swinging off of the edge of the back porch. She doesn’t say anything but gives him a big smile. Dad always tells him about her day, and she’s waiting to hear what he has to say about it.

A pause. “--Or maybe it’s ‘cause you’re a girl. He’s always had trouble talkin’ to girls.”

Whilst he does believe Shibi, Chouza still takes a few seconds before he lets his vice-like grip on the other man’s fist go, a brow raising after.

“Shikaku’s a fuckin’ idiot. C’mon, Shibi--You ain’t dumb. I know you’ve figured that out by now.”

Despite himself, he shakes his head and smirks.

“You can tell ‘im you did what he asked, if you want. Fucker owes me a round an’ has been dodging me, so I was plannin’ on kicking his ass anyway.”

Firewood is a necessity this time of year, and he has been ignoring Yoshino in favour of carrying logs off to one side of his home (so that they may be broken apart later). …Trying to, at least.

Eventually, he drops the weighty trunks onto the ground, dusting off his hands as the ground rumbles a little from the impact.

“Protip for gettin’ someone to listen to you: Don’t insult ‘em first. Unless you’re dealing with a whole crowd or something, that shit don’t work.

just occurred to me that canon kinda worked in my favour for once in that some of the akimichi would know people in kumo

ive hc’d for a while now that some (uninjured) akimichi were stationed in kumo for a bit to help rebuilding efforts after the war and chouza was there bc clan head business

i also hc b (who i have a blog for here) as helping as well (in gyuuki’s form if the bijuu itself wasnt available or w/e reason), and i think its reasonable to say that two high-ranking ppl wouldve run into one another at some point during this. they wouldnt be ~~best friends or anything, but i think theyd get along

i also note that b treats karui like shes his daughter, and if he would trust anyone not quite on his level to deliver important documents and the like around, hed choose her, which is a way she could potentially run into chouza

she assumes this conversation is meant to stay between them, especially considering how dad acted last time grandpa cheered her on like this.

for reference: he didn’t take it well. mom was fine with it as long as it didn’t cause any clan problems. but dad has always been a bit of a pacifist. he doesn’t appreciate the nuances of war. especially war against men.

she’s tempted to go seek out kawaki just to have a story to tell her grandpa later. he doesn’t talk much anymore, and sometimes when he does he shares stories she’s not sure she’s supposed to hear.

she misses the times before this when he’d give her attention and tell her stories. good ones.

he doesn’t so that often anymore, so when he reaches out to compliment her, chouchou immediately perks up. scoots right on over to her grandpa with the kind of smile that means she’s got something good to tell him.

“do you want to help me do it again? or give me ideas for next time?”

But all that kind of response gets is Chouza scowling, then moving to pick up the bed Shikaku is laying on, turn it on its side in mid-air, then set it down, next to the other man who is now on the floor.
