This page is taking a very long nap, so I’ll be posting my toku crap in my main instead of doing just about everything in a side blog.

Anyone made that gif where Kairi pinches Umika’s nose?
Because it’s everything :’)

Zebraman (2004)
Man 2004 was a crazyfest for toku movies. Along with the horrible nearly 3 hour long Devilman movie, we have Zebraman, a sort of meta toku film taking place in the fantastical future year of 2010. I want so much to like this movie but watching it makes my brain feel like it’s jelly being spread over a piece of hyperdimensional toast for an alien higher level being beyond my puny human comprehension.
I’d opine more on the subject but I think it comes down to “I don’t get it.”
Except this part. This part makes sense.

Yessss my Naga jacket showed up today! I ordered through Uncle Hulk, who threw in a Spada hat and a keychain.

Machi Action
This is not Kamen Rider
It’s Machi Action, a 2013 Taiwanese “tokusatsu themed” comedy, and it’s absolutely wonderful. There’s some great humor.
There are some surprisingly beautiful, creative shots and storytelling of the people behind our spandex clad rainbow vomit superheroes.
The characters come to life so much more in this hour and a half than in some 50 episode shows, they all have their own goals and motivations.
Some fun asskickery because why not?
And poking its head out through the humor is the movie’s huge heart and pretty touching tale that played my heartstrings like a fiddle.
There’s so much going for this movie and I love it. Machi Action is not “good for toku” or anything like that. It’s just good. So stop reading this and go watch it. Have a link. I’m out.

Balance and Naga’s chemistry is so beautiful. It’s what I’m going to miss the most.

I don’t think it’s just you, but I kept thinking of Rufio. And the CGI Devilman reminded me of his appearance in Man With A Mission’s music video for When My Devil Rises. I think that was from a pachinko machine, but it’s not a bad thing to be compared to in this case.
Devilman received a film adaptation in 2004, neat! Which was voted the worst Japanese film of the 2000s in an online poll by a landslide, not so neat… and while that’s a heck of a claim I can certainly see why it was a contender. But hey, we got some cool looking scenes out of it. Have some gifs. More to come.

Somehow I stumbled across this lovely Rider themed song awhile back and I love it. Beserk released a few other toku and giant robo themed songs, along with other weaby stuff.

A very fond farewell to my favorite Sentai Series and the ultimate saviors of the (other) universe. We’ve still got some movie content coming of course, I’m excited for Kyuranger VS Space Sheriff!
