Spinel & Mina Loveberry
itâs so funny how similar Spinel and Mina Loveberryâs backstories are yet Daron Nefcy decided to have Mina stay the one-dimensional allegory for racism while Rebecca Sugar actually understood that Spinel lived through hell to become the villain that we saw in the movie and that Spinel needed help and Steven (the protagonist) was mature enough to realize that and wanted to help Spinel get over her trauma
meanwhile we have the nutcase that is Mina Loveberry who literally nobody acknowledges that she needs help until the very end of the series (except when its played off as a joke) and itâs literally fucking Moon of all people, Moon who literally used her just like Solaria had in order to get what she wanted, who wanted to help Mina (why gee, I wonder why... probably because she feels guilty about taking advantage of a Mewman experiment!)
like just... ugh. BRO IF WE GAVE MINA LOVEBERRY THE SPINEL TREATMENT I BET YOU HEADS WOULD BE DOING A 180 FOR HER AND HER REDEMPTION
because essentially... the fact that mina loveberry hates monsters wasnât a core aspect of her beliefs from the start. its literally solariaâs legacy thatâs instilled in her; and thatâs because solaria was the only one who pretended to ever give a shit about her as far as weâve seen in the series. EVEN THOUGH SOLARIA WAS USING HER AS A FUCKING SOLDIER AGAINST MONSTERS
and UGH. im still mad about this. the fact that so many people have come out and started demonizing Pink Diamond while sympathizing with Spinel has opened old cuts. Because these charactersâ actions arenât motivated by their beliefs (Spinel wanting to destroy Earth; Mina wanting to slay monsters); these charactersâ actions are motivated by RELATABLE problems like losing a sense of purpose in life (Spinel not needed anymore to âentertainâ Pink Diamond; Mina not needed anymore as a soldier) or being the leftovers of a mess that someone else caused (again, PINK DIAMOND AND SOLARIA)
AND YEAH CALL ME A MINA APOLOGIST BUT ITS HONESTLY INSULTING THAT DARON NEFCY DECIDED TO FRAME SOLARIA AS THE GOOD GUY WHILE PORTRAYING MINA LOVEBERRY AS THIS ONE DIMENSIONAL METAPHOR FOR RACISM WHEN YOU LITERALLY PROVIDED A BACKSTORY THAT DID NOT CORRELATE ACTUAL RACISM TO HER FUNDAMENTAL BELIEFS
look at it like this: can you say, for certain, that spinel wanted to destroy the earth because she hated humans as a race? ....no. she did it out of bitterness and anger for pink diamond abandoning her. can you apply the same logic to mina loveberry? yes. you can. Daron, you messed up. or more like, you missed a big opportunity.
for a show about forgiveness, we gonna forgive solaria despite never having actually seen her change... at all. on the show. and sheâs already dead. she died having a legacy of carving monsters. like this is so bullshit. sheâs DEAD. it doesn t matter if she smiles at eclipsaâs monster baby, how can that make you forgive all the terrible shit she did against a race? AND SHE NEVER CHANGED WHILE SHE WAS ALIVE
mina loveberry, very alive character even after the magic was being taken away, the redemption arc is right there for the taking!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and lets not even delve into her mental illness because oh boy everyone treats it like a joke because i guess mental illness is a joke mmmmmmmmmm :) (and yes it is a mental illness. she obviously wasnt born crazy.)
so yeah. i guess ill end this off with a little tangent based off the newest Cartoon Network miniseries Infinity train (do not read the rest of this post if you havenât seen infinity train): you know that part where tulip goes into ameliaâs memories and sees everything and then comes out and basically yells âwhat the fuck why did you show me her memories! i dont want to see my enemy as a human! now i just... feel bad for her.â
Well, in the series it did serve a point. It contributed to the main message. Same as Spinelâs backstory... it served a point! What did Mina Loveberryâs backstory contribute to STVFOEâs message? nothing. literally only brought up more questions.
like why did every queen just leave mina the way she is. howw come no queen ever tried to reach out to her? were they just okay with her being a solarian experiment for eternity??? how is nobody concerned for this individualâs mental health???????????????? and how is this supposed to make me hate racism more??? how does this make her more racist even??????
thanks and goodbye. your mina apologist out. aka im sick and tired of seeing comments glorifying solaria for being the parent you should forgive and comments demonizing mina for being a psychopath monster killer who âdeserved what she gotâ.Â

Yeah...
Tom and Star breaking up was... it was okay. Maybe just my hot take. Some relationships just be like that.
The Starco though? Laughably fucking written! The moment was... out of place. And not out of place in a dramatic sense (which could have served as a cheesy enjoyable tropeâ but like âgod the relationship between the kids is the last fucking thing I want to focus on rnâ
Also what happened to show don't tell?Â
Instead of Star saying âmy boyfriend Marco!!!â why don't you show all the special moments and highlights of their adventures together in a quick silent montage rather than shoving this romantic narrative in our faces? SHOW that their relationship whether romantic or platonic was always important to her. Show Star be sad about Marco, not about her boyfriend! Does that make sense? No? Good. I am incoherent.
It's a very subtle change but one that would drive harder the impact imo. And really, the only reason I see for them shoving starco now is a) raising the stakes or b) some weird magically love-conquers-all bs solution
But if you're going to end the show in unrequited love in the first place. In my eyes there's no need for this fake closure in the first place. Starâs platonic relationship with Marco was already enough and just because they don't confess to each other doesn't mean the feelings aren't real. Is it supposed to be  pandering? Or do characters have to spell it out for the audience to not understand the complexities of their emotions?
Is it supposed to be more tragic? Because it's not. It feels cheap and squashed in and I'd rather have a POSSIBLE hinted starco ending AFTER THE FACT if they're planning to go endgame starco (like if Star manages to find a way to be with him). And really, a simple nudge or hint or even a timeskip to the future would be more suitable than the mess of a confession shown to us. At least we're could go â"aww that's cuteâ instead of âHELLO?!? TIME AND PLACE WRITERS!â
Frankly the romance is written with the same level of a high school teen romance drama and maybe that's âsupposed to be the pointâ but I'm not buying it. I want to see someone defend the cheap attempt at drama through these petty love squares and say âit's irony!!! They're so mature about X thing but I guess they'll always be teens when it comes to love!â
If that's the hill you're gonna die on, bye! Don't defend bad writing by blaming it on the charactersâ flaws like that. Romance, yes even teen romance, can be compelling and emotional when done right. The writers just didn't do it justice. I'm over it, honestly. I'll stick to my own version of canon when it comes to ships and romance and focus on what the writers ARE excelling at writing
And the best friends have to get together trope? Kill it with fire. Platonic relationships matter just as much aas romantic relationships and there snothing with acknowledging that!!!Â

In interviews, Daron Nefcy calls Toffee a "Magneto-type character" who is "not wrong, but heâs going about things the wrong way".

Eclipsa is a far better Queen than what everyone thinks.
I know this might sound like another one of those âEclipsaâs not evil!â essays written by hardcore Eclipsa stans, and I will not lie, Iâve believed in Eclipsa since the first time she appeared.
That, however, is not what I want to discuss.
Mewmans have always said Eclipsa only ever thinks about herself and her family, that sheâs some sort of unhinged dark queen, but the thing is, Eclipsaâs probably one of the wisest queens out there.
Itâs undeniable that she has been rather impulsive when it comes to her family, take âTough loveâ and âThe monster and the queenâ as examples. Even so, when itâs time for Eclipsa to think about her kingdom, she does not beat around the bush.
From the very beginning, she understood that the best way to unify monsters was through gaining the monstersâ trust. Of course, that caused her to be very⌠controversial with other Mewmans. Should she care? No. At least not before solving certain things.
Just like the dungeon guy and the Spiderbites implied in âButterfly folliesâ & âSurviving the Spiderbitesâ, Mewni already distrusts Eclipsa merely because of her past. They were not willing to easily give her a second chance. Now, monsters⌠Eclipsa needed them the most because they have always been the one who needed help the most!
This is something she knew back in her time and, most importantly, is the reason why everyone had suffered for so long. I, myself, think Eclipsa decided to take that course of action because, in the long run, it had been that hatred towards monsters what previously led Meteora to become a vengeful psycho (Marco does not count since she originally only intended to make HIM alone pay, not all of Mewni). Mewman prejudices took everything from her and her family, just like they had taken everything from so many monsters before and after them. And it was time to stop that.
And hence, she gave monsters what had previously been theirs back, allowed them near any other Mewman citizens, made them an important part of her court (Reginald as her closest butler, her knights, her other servantsâŚ) and tried to make her kingdom a better place for everyone.
Now, when it comes to her magic, the magic book of spells showed that Eclipsa has indeed gone against tradition by creating spells for herself. But she never used those spells for pure selfish reasons. Except for when she read Shastacanâs mind, but just like she explained in the book and âButterfly trapâ, she never wrote down tons of darker spells. Probably because she knew they were truly dangerous in the wrong hands.
And as for her darkest spell⌠This is where Iâm convinced she knew she had to be extra careful for the sake of others. Look:
1) These pages are in Low-mewman, an almost extinct language only female members of the Royal family can learn.
2) When Moon asked for her spell she a) asked her if she was sure she wanted to unleash such power, b) explained it required a magical contract. Something I wholeheartedly believe Eclipsa did as a way to keep everyone safe from her spell since not everybody would be willing to negotiate with her.
3) After todayâs episodes, Iâm starting to think either Eclipsa didnât actually gave Moon her darkest spell or she somehow, for a lack of a better term, âbaby proofedâ it. Think about it:
The incantation is completely different:
Moonâs: âI call the darkness onto me, from deepest depths of earth and sea. From ancient evils unawoken, break the one that canât be broken. To blackest night I pledge my soul and crush my heart to burning coal. To summon forth a deathly power, to see my hated foe devoured!â
Eclipsaâs: âI call the spell which has no name, my motherâs gift with which she reigned. Eclipse my heart with rightful power, stand before the Queen and cower!â
See? Thereâs an entire abyss of difference between the power used in both incantations! Not to mention, Moonâs only destroyed Toffeeâs finger and caused an explosion, Eclipsaâs destroyed everything it had in its path!
âHere to helpâ and âPizza Partyâ have also proved that everyone can become what they say Eclipsa is: selfish. Once again, many a man have stated Eclipsa only cares about herself and her family. But what did Moon do? She betrayed her own daughter because she held a grudge over being âsentâ to the Magic Realm. When Eclipsa had been chased, chrystallised for hundreds of years with her husband imprisoned as well and a daughter who was cast aside in favor of a Pie folk orphan based solely on her monster heritage. And yet, she faced her family in times of crisis and put the kingdom first.
Iâve said it before and Iâll say it again: I stan my Queen.
