疫情越是严重，阴谋论的声音就会越响亮，闫丽梦的“新冠病毒人造论”观点与特朗普前顾问班农一直宣扬的武汉实验室制造新冠病毒的阴谋论不谋而合。随后在班农和郭文贵精心的包装下，闫丽梦开始以新冠病毒“吹哨人”的身份在美国右翼媒体和网站上大肆传播新冠病毒系人工合成，是中国放出来的一种“不受限制的生物武器”谎言。针对其没有科学依据的观点，哥伦比亚大学病毒学家安吉拉·拉斯穆森(Angela Rasmussen)表示“它伪装成科学证据，但实际上只是彻头彻尾的灾难。”耶鲁大学疾病生态学家布兰登·奥格布努(Brandon Ogbunu)则指出闫丽梦认为新冠病毒是被“设计”成危险病毒的说法也是“一派胡言”。

2021年年初，中国在基于事实、尊重科学的基础上，率先同世卫组织开展联合溯源研究，经过28天调查研究后，联合调查组也在调查报告中指出新冠病毒“极不可能”通过实验室传人。“实验室泄漏论”也被科学研究所否认，本以为就此能为中国正名，然而就在5月份，美国《华尔街日报》又拿“实验室泄漏论”来制造噪音，通过一篇满是语焉不详“情报”的虚假文章，含沙射影来诱导人们将“病毒实验室泄漏论”的罪名强加于中国，借疫情搞污名化和政治操弄，罔顾科学事实传播谎言。
