concept development
Theme: desire
Event: The 18th of October
Desire: “a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen”
the soundscape that we are creating for assessment 3 will focus on the weekly topic of desire as the soundscape that we are creating will create a sense of desire for comfort by the audience as the aim of the soundscape is to make you feel uncomfortable and there for stimulating the audience
stimulate: raise levels of physiological or nervous activity in (the body or any biological system).
the soundscape will feature a variety of everyday sounds that were heard on the 18th of October which will then be layered on top of each other and aim to make the audience feel comfort as well as uncomfortable

Artist’s: GROUP PROJECT
Michel Auder, Excerpt of TRUMPED, 2018.
Auder creates work around violence, emotions, transference an subjectivity. ‘Trumped’ is a sound and video installation that captures footage from Auders phone, that I eludes stop-motion, surveillance and flashbacks. Auders installation work captures everything around him with a dearistic tone, to focuses on limited knowledge and unimagined possibilities. This inspired the group to create an element of surprise that twist everyday experiences, through the use of mashing up different sound. This ‘twist’ aims at provoking an uncomfortable experience to each individual listening, in order to make the audience unsure of what is going to happen next to create an unimaginable experience.
“Michel Auder (Contemporary Art Daily)”. in , , 2018, <http://www.contemporaryartdaily.com/tag/michel-auder/> [accessed 19 October 2018].
Samson Young, Venice Biennale, 2017.
Young creates sound work through the use of different instrumental equipment, that focuses on politically charged performances and installations. The sounds and videos presented in he’s work are a mash up of bombs dropping in the Middle East, these sounds are recreated through he’s use of instruments/non- instruments. The use of carnage sounds, can of compressed air and saving razors aim at making the audience feel uncomfortable with the situation, and create negative emotions. Young has inspired the group to create certain emotions from an individual through certain sounds, confronting individuals with historical experiences that humans previously suffered through.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan
Lawrence creates different sounds from counter-surveillance and sonic investigation to draw attention to political issues. One of his projects ‘Hummingbird Clock’, appropriates a government technique of recording the humming sound of the electrical grid to trace the time and place of CCTV recordings. Although the assignment doesn’t relate to political issues, Lawrence inspired the group with technique and mash-up of different sounds to grasp the audiences attention. The projects made by Lawrence visualise investigations through sound, that questions the sound and visibility of humans rights violations. The sound we are working with will also question these intentions by creating uncomfortable violations.

Statement
“Their lives bleed into mine
What am I becoming?
As long as I'm bleeding in line
I can hear war drums drumming
I feel my purity and youth leave me
As their lack of couth feeds me
And their sweet tooth bleeds me
Until eventually I too am greedy
In this bloody atmosphere
Our dirty past is clear
Inspiring future fears
And hardened tears
Drowned by beers
And empty cheers
Through the years
Until we're here
As a bloody stranger
Head banger
Teenager
In Jesus' manger
This blight
Of life
As a simulation
Of assimilation
Into a nation
Of incineration
In a bloody mire
Lit by the fire
Positioned higher
I call my sire
They bled into me
Now red is all I see
No way to get free
So I follow their lead
And choose to bleed
As they pray and plead
It becomes my turn
To cause the burns
That I had learned
When I was spurned
And lost my purity
Now blood cures me”

My final work is a digital drawing I made over the past month. My final work is a continuation from our first assignment in which we made a poster design. I feel as though my work is apart of the same series as my poster design. I initially began this assignment with the idea of creating a mixture of paper collage with original drawings. After some experimentation I realised that I just wanted to continue drawing, and keep heading down this path I want to follow.
My work is influenced by artists such as, Josan Gonzalez, Simon Stalenhag, and Audrey Kawasaki. Josan Gonzalez’s work is highly graphic and narrative based. He creates incredible retro-futuristic worlds filled with interesting characters, made possible through his clearly moebius inspired technique. Simon Stalenhag is a German artist, that focuses drawing landscape through a deeply cinematic lense. Each of his digital paintings foreshadow a moment in time, juxtaposing technology with lush and vivid landscapes creates questions and a story within the scene. Audrey Kawasaki is an incredibly talented oil painter that paints onto wood creating mysterious and feminine figures. Her understanding of technical practice and the focus on tone and lighting in her work is deeply inspiring in my own drawings.
All of these artists create immense worlds and stories through their art, based in a sense of illustration. Personally that’s something I find most compelling about art is the capacity to tell rich stories through detailed worlds and characters. Emotion and feeling is also an important component in my work, I intend to receive a certain response from the viewer. In a single drawing of Stalenhag’s the viewer can feel a spectrum of emotion. His compelling and dramatic scenes evoke a sense of curiosity and question.
The concept of horror is something I’ve always been interested in, and the effect it can have on the viewer. The capacity to confront and scare is powerful and can be used to create stories and ideas unlike anything else. “I’m a believer that, at the end of the day, we all love horror for the same basic reason: the potential for fear intrigues us. The human mind thrives on stimulation, and if we can find that in film, it’s a wonderful experience. It just so happens, that horror pushes so many boundaries, that it makes for a far more scintillating experience than most other cinematic niches. The potential for terror lives in horror, the potential for repulsion lies in terror… sexuality, awe, empathy, sympathy, and pure disbelief”.

Today in class we studied the concept of affect and body politics. The in-class experiment was to ‘ Choose one aspect from your list and design a collaborative intervention -- a sculpture, accessory or wearable using rudimentary materials. How do these objects alter, challenge or question the ideology that affects behaviour and the body?’
Our group made glasses with a small hole in the paper that you can see through. This invention was to restrict the person from peripherals or anything distracting, and therefore forces the person to focus on what’s in front of them.

Audrey Kawasaki is Los Angeles based painter. She creates oil paintings on wood panels. Her primary influences are Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha.
Her style of work resonates with me for the refined illustrative technique and the brooding subject matter of the work. There’s something dark yet at the same time hopeful and passionate about the characters Kawasaki paints. The facial tones she uses have impact and emotion. Kawasaki uses colour subtly which enhances the drama of the piece.

I drew a quick drawing, using some of Josan Gonzalez’s principles in drawing. Detail, and linework. I combined this with my own way of drawing and come up with a deer!

Thinking about what I might create for the next project. My tutor suggested I continue with drawing. So I’m thinking about the directions I can take this in.
