Why do you think effeminacy is tolerated in gay men below thirty (and sometimes not even that long, bc each day “gay old” becomes closer to like mid-20s lmao) but it’s seen as repulsive in older gay men?

youth is a beauty standard and people are willing to put up with or eroticize behavior from people they want to have sex with - most gay guys are seen as not sexually viable once they hit a certain (not that old) age, except in limited particular situations. plus (positively received) androgyny is conceptually tied with youth in general. this seems heightened w gay men bc so much like of the space for eroticizing androgyny comes from a specific age gap dynamic that expects one to shift their position in it as they age.

but its similar for the limited cases of men in general - the majority of androgynous rock stars shift to a more convetionally masculine presentation as they get older, and most of the tiger beat pretty boys fade out of the limelight (your Sawas or JTTs) or shift image (Leos or Brad Pitts) once they can't coast on the social androgynization of youth. the difference is that there are more older androgynous gay/bi men still around with age.

One thing that some people seem to pick up on with the school children thing is that yes, there are a lot more queer girls and cafab trans people at that age than there are for boys or transfems (that link shows that girls are 2.5x as likely to ID outside of heterosexuality as boys). 

The two missing links are obvious here: one is that simply ID-ing as str8 doesn’t mean yr not ever hooking up with other boys (as any cursory experience of grindr would show). The other is that even if this might be partly true, what it means isn’t that there’s a surplus of gay girls, but that different levels of homophobia at school or at home result in gay or bi boys repressing their sexualities until they are not in an obligatory institution or under their possibly homophobic parents’ roof.

This factors into the sort of dual-crisis of trans reception right now. On one hand, there is the “they are transgendering our daughters” kind of argument being made by the ROGD parents and Shrier, which is upset that so many young cafab trans people are coming out - and use that lack of symmetry to argue against respecting their identities. On the other side of it is the “Trans Widows” crisis with women who are mad that their “husbands” are coming out as trans women in their 20′s or 30′s. In a lot of these instances they are mad that they weren’t told ahead of time, but the double bind here is obvious - when was that supposed to happen if coming out before would have been being part of the ‘teen craze’ framing?
