hm. okay. i think i’m going to um. make a google doc organizing my thoughts on this tomorrow. i definitely have my grievances but if you had told me several hours ago that team sonic would drop an april fools visual novel with tails and amy as the lead characters and a nonbinary mc i would have laughed in your face. actually, i would have stopped you at “visual novel” to laugh. i still personally cannot believe this is real and will probably have to check to make sure when i wake up tomorrow. that’s all for tonight.

i think if 15 or so years ago we drilled into the head of the sonic writing team that if they need a character that fills certain criteria to be a part of the story they should look to knuckles if it’s an ally and metal if it’s a rival before evn CONSIDERING shadow to fill the spot the world would be a much better and happier place and there could have been so much more work more carefully crafted to keep him true to the original source material. don’t even ask me about shadow the hedgehog 2005 we could have recovered from that we just didn’t because sega is the worst ever

i think what i need to say about sonic prime is. as long as we accept that it is canon adjacent but not canon adjacent enough to BE canon, we’re all good. because it’s a seriously well written well produced show. but the more you try to align it with sonic canon the more dead ends you hit just by it’s lack of acknowledgement of any prior lore to that point aside from small inconsequential easter eggs (ie. the angels voyage)

this is not me saying i think sonic prime is a bad show at all. the plotline is good the characters are incredibly enjoyable the animation is incredible. it is just me saying that if this situation did happen in actual canon, it would have looked a lot different.

however i will say it is the first piece of sonic media in a long time where shadow’s presence is genuinely REFRESHING so congratulations

shadow had it great in prime season 3. he got to sit in a hole, beat up things that look like sonic, and sonic team wasn’t even using them for their edgelord paycheck. they were using someone else. for their edgelord paycheck. that must have felt like a relief. shame it came at the cost of sacrificing nine’s character but whatever
