from sirens to vampires women have leaned into their sexuality and sensuality to comment on objectification and take agency over their sexuality forever. i dont really see why we’re suddenly scandalized?
#maybe part of it is also because art is so closely tied to money now moreso than it was before too#but like didnt we all eat up work like jennifers body?#etc etc#anyways im seated#sabrina carpenter

for almost all of taylor’s albums, the closing song is hopeful. even despite the trials and tribulations of reputation, taylor ends with an affirming “i stay.” the heartbreak on red is concluded with the pleasant “begin again,” and even the on and off relationship on 1989 ends with “i think i am finally clean.”
folklore doesn’t have that. folklore has hoax. (and the lakes, which i’d argue is equally devastating, but that’s not the point here.)
hoax is resigned to misery. hoax is i don’t want anyone else, i don’t even want to try, i’m going to stay here forever because i want you back. hoax says “i will make the work of my life loving you even if i never see you again.”
unlike all of taylor’s other albums, folklore expresses a deep inability to move on from the circumstances. there is no freeing song in folklore—it is a graveyard.

i love the…. almost horror aspects of this album. all the references to ghosts and death…. and sonically, the unexpected shrieking in WAOLOM and the banging and screaming during “old habits die screaming” and even the way the tension subtly builds across the sixteen tracks and by the end you’re so stressed and shaken it’s like! losing your sense of self and feeling like you’ve become a monster is horror. and i’m sooooo glad she leaned into it

Only when your girlish glow, flickers just so, do they let you know: It's hell on earth to be heavenly. Them's the breaks, they don't come gently. Clara Bow - The Tortured Poets Department (2024)
