Even if you take away the concept of servants and the fight scenes and So As I Pray Unlimited Blade Works and defenseless derrieres and everything else that turned Fate/Stay Night into one of the biggest names in the otakusphere of all time, it would still have been a novel entry into Arthuriana just for what it says about people as swords.

See a ton of Western-style fantasy and science fiction likes calling people swords to make them badasses because if you're called Bob then you're just a guy with a sword, but if Bob is called "The King's Blade" suddenly Bob is a badass now, he's the shit, Bob isn't just a warrior; he's a true believer, and that means he's exceptional. Nothing more romantic than declaring yourself nothing but a tool for your master.

And then Fate/Stay Night said you cannot love someone as a weapon, and you cannot reach them without an open hand free of steel. A sword only does one thing to a heart.

Playing Marvel Rivals, I can't help but think about how Hero Shooters got the idea of the MOBA ultimate wrong* in practically the exact same way FGO got the original concept of a noble phantasm wrong*

* - not necessarily "wrong" as in a game design mistake, but "wrong" as in this is now a very different idea from the original concept

November, I need to tell you about this strange thing that just happened in my brain re: TF that I think you'll appreciate.

I had fallen asleep listening to Left on Read, specifically the episode on The Order of the Day. I awoke a few hours later to my lover sliding into my bed and kissing me (normal; somnophilia is a regular & negotiated part of our sex life). But as I lay there, brain fuzzily resurfacing while his hand dipped below the waistband of my pajamas, I became conflicted; for reasons I could not explain, I felt very strongly that us having sex was linked intrinsically to the Anschluss. Not that us having sex would cause or prevent it, rather it was as if our genitals engaging in any way was somehow referent to not only the behavior of the Austrian ruling class in 1938, but also the lack of accountability afterward, in the present. Our bodies became extensions of decades of post-war Austrian infrastructure and capital, and here we were engaging with them so uncritically!

This train of thought makes so little sense that I could not really describe it to him when I woke all the way up, similar to how I'm struggling to describe it to you right now. All I remember is lying there, holding the "pause" version of our safeword in my head & debating whether I should use it so I could very seriously tell him that maybe we should handle this dark, fraught part of history with more sensitivity. I don't even know what the fuck that would have sounded like.

Fortunately, I woke up the rest of the way in short order and realized that nothing going on in my brain for the last 30 minutes was in touch with reality. When we finished up I told my lover what had happened to the best of my ability, and he thought it was hysterical. I hope you do too.
