Another Brick: Gen and Rod
"Mama, when's daddy coming?" Amelie piped for the thousandth time that afternoon.
Genevieve sighed and placed the eyeliner she was applying on the bathroom counter, turning to her daughter with an exasperated expression. It seemed that Amelie just couldn't get enough of Rod. "I told you, mon amour, soon. Your father is a busy man."
Apparently, it wasn't enough for Amelie, as she huffed and marched into the bathroom, leaning on Gen's leg. "I want him to be here now," she complained into the hem of Gen's dress. "I miss him."
Gen pursed her lips at her daughter, stroking her silky brown hair in something almost akin to pity. "I know he misses you too, sweets."
Now, Gen considered herself a strong woman. She had to be; having  given birth to a child at fifteen years old. There was no room for whining or complaining about the cards she had been dealt, for there was a child, an actual human life who relied on her for food, clothes, shelter, guidance, and love. It wasn't easy, and definitely wasn't always fun, but Genevieve had to accept it for what it was. So she worked hard, foregoing the parties and adventures her fellow young adults actively engaged in for extra work hours and tea parties with her daughter. It had come to the point that she'd stopped caring about other's opinions of her or her family or the fact that she's had a child so young, because in the long run none of it mattered.
Except where Rod was concerned. Every day, Gen kicked herself for having such intense feelings for him still. He was completely wrong for her, an asshole who was probably up to no good. His family certainly had a history of misdeeds, and no matter how many times a Lestrange swore that he or she was changed, Gen just had a hard time believing it. Arrogance, hypocrisy, selfishness...he was certainly not the man she envisioned falling in love with as a young girl.
But damn it, she had fallen hard. He was so handsome, so handsome and smooth and Amelie was head over heels for him. And he had helped out, always making sure that she and Amelie were taken care of. Where that money came from was beyond her, but Gen couldn't bring herself to ask, because who knew if it would make her feel guilty. He was the chink in her armor, her weak point among a buttress of strength, and every night Genevieve would kick herself for being so relentless in her affection, because no matter how hard she willed against it, there was always an unrequited hope in her that Rod would finally love her back.
With another sigh, Genevieve finished putting on the makeup that she hardly ever wore, making herself look nice for the father of her child when he came.

I pay tons of money so the both of you can lie comfortably. I'm working three jobs so that you don't. Plus, i'm risking my life with two of them.
That's great, Rod, really. But parenting is a lot more than paying money and taking her out for ice cream every so often.

It's not my fault you chose for her to live with you, is it?
Oh, because you'd really have dropped out of school to take care of her, yeah?

I would, but i'm busy with work. I have two jobs, and other business and my siblings to take care of. I'm spending as much time as possible with her.
Yeah, well, I'm busy with work too, but I don't have the option of shuttling my kid off somewhere else if I need to, Rod.

I'm not going to take her anywhere stupid. I'm a responsible man!
Right. Very responsible.
She's obsessed with you, you know. It'd be nice if you could do things more often with her.

Gen, do you mind if I see Amelie this weekend?
Well, she's been whining for you for weeks now so I suppose that's okay. As long as you don't take her anywhere stupid.
