As much as I want to support ethical farming practices I will be buying the cheapest bag of frozen chicken thighs as much as the next frugal/poor person which is why animal welfare needs to be legislated, not left up to the invisible hand of the free market or some bullshit. Invisible hand of the free market finds itself around a lot of throats.

when Natasha says "I will love you Anatole" in that broad clear belt at the end of the ball sequence, it is important that we believe her completely; the entire plot turns on buying Natasha's refusal of Andrey for Anatole. it is one of my absolute favorite moments of musical theater coming together in a true synthesis of music, lyrics, and acting. the music rises and the lyrics are simple and decisive the way Natasha's spoken lines almost always are. she is earnest and sweet and young, and she believes whatever she is saying in the moment utterly, so we do too. moments before she was genuinely terrified of Anatole grabbing her and confessing his love. and that terror is still present, but after the kiss, she decides that she must love him. "how else could all of this have happened?" this is such a great demonstration of the intersection between her fantasy of great love and the realities of womanhood. the kiss is a catch-22; if she ran away or refused him on the spot, there might be social consequences of disbelief, ostracization, etc; Anatole is a powerful and beloved young man. if she returns his affections she must refuse Andrey and disappoint her family. Natasha makes a split second decision. I don't think that makes her love for him any less real to me. she does love him, then, immediately and totally, because there is no way she'd make that choice otherwise. and she sells it completely: "I will love you Anatole" is the simple, decisive, belted solo lyric at the crux of a show filled with wordy intricate lines. Pierre has already sang dust and ashes at this point, so we understand the thesis of the show: "when you fall in love you wake up." and this is Natasha waking up into her strange new world, of not being the earnest simple girl everyone expects, of making her own decisions, no matter how ill-advised.

On April 16th 2025 the US federal government has proposed to change the interpretation of the endangered species act so that it no longer protects habitat.
This is open for public comment until the end of May 19th. Please comment and make your voice heard.
Wildlife need their habitat. If the ESA redefines harm so that habitat is no longer protected, the implications for wildlife would be catastrophic.

Fuck it -- God bless the rural queers. God bless every dyke, faggot and tranny who lives in a town with less than 10k. God bless every queer living in red towns in red counties, in blue states or red states alike. God bless every queer who's also a redneck, who knows how to hunt and fish. God bless every queer living in a town where every other house is condemned. Where half the storefronts are empty.
God bless rural queers.

People straight up do not realize that part of the reason manufacturing is not returning to the United States in massive waves is because we have things like “OSHA” and “environmental laws” and “minimum wages.”
It’s not even just about fair wages. It’s literally about the fact that you can’t dump industrial waste in a river here anymore.
Our cheap goods are so cheap because South American and Asians environments are being destroyed so you can buy a $40 pair of shoes every 3 months.
Cutting granite countertops has lead to a rapid increase in silicosis in the lungs out in California. All the working men and women in my family have died from pulmonary fibrosis. They were carpet layers, Post office workers, floor tilers. Staying safe in manufacturing jobs is annoying but also very, very expensive. Real manufacturing factories belch smoke and dust and grime that causes asthma and birth defects in surrounding communities. Everyone wants their manufacturing jobs back until they realize their kids are living directly under the Asthma Plant.
There will come a time when the workers in these countries rise up and demand better and things will start to even out, but if you want to honestly “do your part,” you gotta stop buying cheap shit for no reason.
Not every event needs to be celebrate with a baseball cap or a coozie or a t shirt or a keychain. Not every wall in the house has to have a picture or a cute phrase on it. The knickknacks are killing people.

So I just looked at a chart about tipping and apparently a quarter of Americans find tipping difficult.
I know this is really off-topic, but if you want to leave a tip and don't want to bust out your phone, here's a good mental shortcut:
If your bill is in the double digits, take the first digit of that number and double it. So if your meal/service was $25 dollars, you take the 2 and double it to make a $4 tip. This guarantees that your tip will fall within the range of 14%-20%, which is the generally expected amount for tipping in the US. For bills in the triple digits, take the first two numbers and double them.
EDIT: I just realized my rule doesn't quite work for costs between 15-19 dollars. For bills between 15-19 dollars, just default to a 3 dollar tip to fall in that 15%-20% range.
EDIT: For fancy restaurants or exceptional service, you triple the first digit. Tip Range: 20%-30%.
If you want to tip just the bare minimum, you can use your phone calculator to plug in the cost of the meal multiplied by .15 and it'll give you the exact tip.
For any confused non-Americans, the wages for service industry workers in the US have not kept up with the cost of living at all. Sadly, that saddles the worker with the responsibility of collecting a living wage via customer engagement.
