Tests and assignments annoyingly wagging tails waiting to be pet. “row, row, row your boat” mid-semester break sail its ship to bring aboard passengers towards the journey of procrastination. I, per contra, appeared to joy for them. I desist myself in spite of loneliness from receiving my friends’ heart of gold to accompany me in this awful jungle. I just bid them farewell as the shadow bit by bit perished from my sorrow eyes.

3 steps in 3 islands

In 2018, my friends and I whom I know since primary school wanted to do a reunion. So, we decided to go to island in Semporna, Sabah according to the package we have purchased cost only RM65 in a day. The package offered 3 islands which are Bohey Dulang Island, Tatagan Island and Sibuan Island. The package includes island hopping, snorkeling and foods were provided as well. The islands do not provide accommodation because the location is near to to the mainland thus allows us to visit all three in one day.

Our first stop is Bohey Dulang island. Built from a volcanic eruption millions of years ago, the scenery on Bohey Dulang Island, Semporna, Sabah, is simply stunning and picturesque. In addition to its stunning blueish seafloor and waterfront, Bohey Dulang Island is also famous for its breathtaking views from the top of the summit.

This scene is very calming to those who seek the peace of mind. But there is one condition for enjoying the magnificent scenery of this 300-meter-high hill. You have to hike the difficult route of 600 meters which takes about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the summit. But trust me! All that fatigue will be worth it once you get to the top. Bohey Dulang is taken from Bajau language. One of the languages belongs to the ethnic in Semporna, Sabah and It is my mother’s language. I somehow agreed with the name of the island based on its shape as if the water is on top of a plate even though I am not fluent in the Bajau language. Bohey means water and dulang is plate.

Our next stop is Tatagan Island. This is the only island we just stayed in the boat where the tour guide led us by showing us around the village built above seawater. The island is mainly inhabited by the Bajau Sea also known as Gypsy Sea. The real-life of Sea Gypsies can be seen as we set foot there. The most intriguing part of this community is the fact that children are so skilled in swimming and using boats without the help of advanced technology. It was interesting to see them dive here and there freely. They are also very friendly. For one thing, there is a culture of the people there to approach the tourist boats for money and other things. Therefore, before going to Tatagan Island, it is advisable that visitors provide snacks. You should also be aware of and protect your belongings. 

If you are planning for a picnic on Sibuan Island, I suggest that bring your own food and drinks as there are no shops there. 

This Sibuan Island is a perfect last stop for us. Sibuan Island located on the coast of Sulawesi Sea is well worth a visit. Its smooth sand and maximum sense of tranquility make the island ideal for a long-term relaxation. This is where my friends and I had our lunch and some of them went snorkelling. While the rest of us who did not swim includes me decided to see around the island.

Summer Breeze Cafe

Every 3 months of semester break, my two partners in crime and I would hit the town and dine at this one cafe named Summer Breeze Cafe. We stepped in and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. The restaurant was filling up quickly as it was for lunch time but we managed to snag a table.

We ordered Spicy Salsa Panko Shrimps with Fried Rice, Nasi Kerabu Sambal Seafood, Creamy mushroom beef balls with rice, Cheesy Seafood and Chicken Butter Masala with Tortilla Chips, Chocolate Fresh Mint Milkshake and homemade popsicles to share. 

My tasting menu started with Nasi Kerabu Sambal Seafood. Everything was placed nicely with the sambal added to the freshness of the seafood. The sambal was just nice, not too spicy but not too bland and I prefer my egg was a bit half-cooked but okay because I got melted away with the next dish.

I got Cheesy Seafood and Chicken Butter Masala with Tortilla Chips as my second course. This is one of my favorite dishes that I ordered the most. The bread is tender inside and perfectly worked together with cheesy seafood. The tortilla chips were crisp and flavorful when it dipped in the chicken butter masala. The sauce was robust but not overpowering.

And for the last course to conclude my meal is popsicle chocolate flavor top with walnut and chocolate fresh mint milkshake to satisfy the thirst.

“Unfold the clue behind Studio Ghibli films”

Japan is one of the leading countries in animation alongside Disney and Dreamworks. The Japanese company especially Studio Ghibli is famous for its feature films and commercials despite mainly targeted for children. Films such as Spirited Away have gone to become one of the highest-grossing movies in the world, recorded in World Guinness Book of Record and even awarded with Oscars. What makes Studio Ghibli pieces truly stand out in the town of animation is unique storytelling which seems to be hiding some kind of message. Lie a layered of perplexing to the narrative and art underneath the surface plot. Fans have dived into the films surpassing the typical viewer and unfolds a few theories on the magical.

First and foremost, hidden messages. For example, A grave of the fireflies. Most people generalized it as an anti-war animation where the film tried to tell the audience that ‘oh war is inhuman, war kills people, war is an act of the devil, etc’ Some people find it controversial because war is not entirely a bad thing. For me, even though the era sets during the World War, the story is about society. How those kids failed miserably due to the isolation from society. They tried their best to survive by seeking help from people but society barely recognize them. They are just kids, they don’t supposedly go through something like that. We can say that the animation display two different images. Even the poster itself is somewhat giving a clue that the animation has a hidden message.

Next, Studio Ghibli throws light on the problem of society and culture. Hayao Miyazaki the creator of Studio Ghibli films likes to address political problems and current events in his films I take the top-grossing Japanese animation, Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli. Japan typically introduce their culture through anime. In Spirited Away, we got to see traditional clothing, houses, dialects and the infamous hot spring. What a unique culture! However, surprisingly, Spirited Away is also condemning society. One of the viewers asked the reason why Chihiro, the main character whose parents turned into pigs. The viewer received a reply in the form of a letter from one of the Studio Ghibli employees. According to the reply translated by RocketNews24, Miyazaki wants to portray the greed during Japan’s recession in the 80s by turning Chihiro’s parents into pigs. It is a metaphor to explain the world and how people change because of greed.

Hidden messages and dark secrets are indeed closely related to our society. Changes in the era from war to the advancement of technology shape the way society are now. It is to remind us. Sometimes people suffer not because of the event but because of the community. They mostly blame the event for example like war. Another reason is on the surface it seems as if they try to promote something but they are actually to critique and to reveal the other side of the coin. They actually put criticism while promoting the culture.. Visual animation is best to show both explicit and implicit meanings. Animation creators can come up with many ideas and opinions without being directly judgemental. The creators leave the arguments to the audience.

Japanese animation specifically Studio Ghibli, instead of just sticking to the kid-pleasing basics, the films are sprawling, complex films that leave both children and adults in awe. Back in those days, animated movies tend to stick to a similar formula: tell a nice story, maybe add in some drama or suspense, but make sure that it all ends happily ever after until Studio Ghibli arrived on the scene. They completely twisted the game. They are not afraid to tackle the hard topics, even if it means that "happily ever after" ending might come with some heavy emotions or ended up being controversial.

Romanticizing Bad Guy

Bad guy plays a significant part in alluring audience. People enjoy reading and watching bad guys with tragic pasts, ultimate six-packs, sexy cars and of course obsessive sides. I am confidently sure my mother did the right thing in raising me up and I know the difference between kind man and evil man in real life but still fictional books and films entangle my senses and I somehow attracted to bad boys onscreen. Why is this happening ?

The release of the trailer for the new Ted Bundy flick, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil & Vile, has attracted the eye of the audience for its evident portrayal of the infamous serial killer as sexy, mischievous and romantic. The trailer showed shirtless Bundy, engaging in love scenes, kindly make dinner for his spouse and child.  Bundy was played by former teen heart-throb Zac Efron (previously famous in High School Musical series) probably to portray him and to be taken seriously. The serial killer was charged with murdering and raping over 30 women. Viewers expressed their thoughts on social media and some people are not happy with the way he was being glamourized.

Let’s face the reality, we knew that bad boys are not someone female should be attracted to even if it was fictioned! I sometimes terrified with myself the moment I realized that I attracted to characters with dark personalities. Because too often bad boys are both physically and psychologically abusive and harmful. It’s either to the lover or someone else and they continually disrespect their lovers and ignore love interest. They do not take no for an answer. For me, romanticizing fictional bad boys will result in romanticizing the dark personalities in real life and this is bad, to say the least. Wrong things about bad boys are that they are violent, sexually menacing, abusing the heroine’s sexual boundaries. They freely touch and sexually harass the heroine and yet it’s seen as something hot and romantic. Personally, I don’t find myself crazy over a man who is so dominant to the point he is no longer shows any tolerance in the relationship. He is just being selfish and think highly of himself. I mean hey, the world does not revolve around you.

Another fictional couple that was being romanticized is Harley Quinn and The Joker in Suicide Squad. Some viewers even pictured them as #relationshipgoals. Is this because the couple looks good together? Or is it because of the dangerous relationship they had is cool and edgy? Or do they believe that DC Comics supervillain, Joker has a soft side for Harley? But the truth is their relationship is twisted, toxic and abusive. What portrayed in the film is not the same in the comic. According to a fan who regularly read the comic, he said that Harley is abused on a daily basis. He did nothing but manipulating, torturing and brainwashing her. This is one of the worst relationships I ever see in the movie. 

According to research, it wasn’t the evilness women are attracted to but the confidence of those characters. Women feel safe and secured because they believe that kind of man provides better protection. However, although the attraction of bad boy is proven through science and through romanticizing in fictional films and books, it only applies to short term relationships. Women still want a responsible and kind man to be their life partner because relationship especially marriage is not something we should gamble and take it lightly. It is a lifetime commitment.

Grave of the Fireflies - movie review

I was googling a list of Ghibli movies that I haven’t watch and I came across a quite sensational and heart-wrenching movie entitled ‘Grave of the Fireflies’. It became a talk among the villagers of animation film as it regarded as depressing movie. Hence, I decided to give it a try. 

I cried. I was trembling because I was trying to hold my tears. I can’t even bring myself to watch the live adaption of this animation film. What’s worst is curiosity did kill the cat. I did some research on it and the film is based on a true story. The survivor from World War II lived long enough to tell the story.  ‘ Ah... disturbing’ I thought to myself. 

At first glance, you will think this story is about anti-war. That is only partially true. However, there’s more than meets the eye. The truth is this movie is about how these two victims of war orphans faced the isolation from society. The writer wanted to emphasize more on the civilians and not the war itself. How humanity evaporates into thin air the moment we are put in the save-yourself-first situation. I’m not saying it’s evil to do so but fail to control the fear of regret seal our sense that we are all in this together. ‘ One for all, all for one’ as it says.

I did my best controlling my emotions but the scenes were too much to handle. I failed. It was truly heart-breaking. Like I have mentioned before, there was a live adaption of this movie. They changed some of the plot but only minor ones. The central theme is still there. I think I will watch it after some time. More courage for more melancholy.

Before I close the curtain to this sharing, another disturbing part of this movie is the poster below. If you lower or increase the brightness of your gadget, you will see two different images with two different meanings. Lower brightness, two children played with fireflies at night. Higher brightness, the fireflies are actually fire from the bombing.

Cats own the house!

I will just be honest. Life at college without having cats as pets is sucks! I know rules are meant to be broken but we need to be considerate to others especially the janitors. Not to mention that getting fined RM50 is a no-no. It’s worth one-week of meals! But spending 5 months without a cat seems impossible for a cat lover like me (says someone who’s mother doesn’t let cats coming into the house). Well, that could also add to the point of why I was so eager to see one. Anyway, I leisurely scrolled through facebook and found a page promoting a new place where you visit and cuddle with the cats. Of course, you have to pay but hey it’s affordable. You can even play with those expensive breeds you always see on the internet. I swear no offense to the kampung cats. They are precious whatever breeds they are.

So I invited a very close friend of mine to come with me. RM9 per hour and RM5 for students. They are like 20-25 cats. Some are inside the cage. Maybe because they haven't been clean or they are just too lazy to come out.

Phewww look at all those fluffy furballs. I swear to God I'm keeping a few of them as pets. Of course, after I get a job and have my own money to take care of it myself. Anyhow, some are very active and friendly and some just lay down and relax.

see? this one sleeps the moment we came in until we left. I mean, he didn't even get distracted by his other fellas and also annoying sounds we made while playing with the cats.

This one caught my attention the most. My two big rounded eyes kept on looking wherever she goes. My whole lens filled with her smooth and majestic walk from one place to another. So aesthetic! ( Is that possible word for a cat? I don't know) I barely managed to take her photo from this angle because she got distracted quite a lot.

Our little tour comes to an end with this wefie as a memory. We tiptoed slowly and took sit near the sleeping cat. Looking adorable as ever! I would definitely come again and bring more nakama.
