Last summer my friend Devere and I wrote a pilot about chosen family in the LGBT community. It's been tough shopping this baby around the past few months but I'm hopeful that someday this story will be told. If not this exact story then at least the story of chosen family in the LGBTQ community the way I know it. I'm not talking about the remaking of Will & Grace as much as I think it's a good laugh and obviously successful. I'm talking about young people who against all odds have made a way for themselves in a world who said statistically you are supposed to fail. I'm talking about trans people, queer POC, and folks who don't come from financial privilege or have the same access to certain resources. I'm talking about grit and hustle and roses out of concrete that laugh through it all because how can you stay sane if you don't laugh at this shit. To quote my favorite artist Sade "It's only love that gets you through", and I know that on this journey of blood, sweat, tears, rejection and fast money, that chosen family has been that love for me. I pray I see the day when trans bodies get to be at the center of the story and #transgirljoy is the trending hashtag. When we no longer have to go to court over which bathroom to use or fear being killed by a lover because he's scared of what people will think of us. But that day won't come unless Hollywood let's the powers that be and middle America really see us. See us as human just like them. Our hearts and our souls, our talents and our flaws, our pain and most importantly, our joy.

I'm so proud of my ballroom roots and to have the opportunity to talk these brilliant minds in a public forum so people can understand the importance of chosen family and the culture highlighted in this film. Lovely meeting Michaela Mendelsohn. She employs many trans people in her restaurants and is bringing much awareness to trans employment. Trans people just want an even shot, and when society doesn't grant us that we sometimes resort to unconventional ways of making money like sex work and other means of survival that can send us down a risky road. I'm so grateful to be part of an inclusive show that understands how important it is to give opportunities to trans people. Keeping the trans voices intact as we tell a story that is specific to us, but ultimately human. It is something Hollywood doesn't always get right. But the efforts of Jill Soloway to bring marginalized people into a creative and exclusive space impacts us directly and it reverberates out to the rest of the community in ways that can't be measured.
