Vance Joy - “Nation of Two”
O segundo álbum do australiano Vance Joy, de 30 anos, chega para seguir os passos de sua bem sucedida estreia em “Dream Your Life Away” de 2014, que trouxe o hit “Riptide”, ouvido em 10/10 baladinhas indies (scroll down for the english version).
Neste “Nation of Two”, de apenas 45 minutos de duração, lançado em fevereiro de 2018, trazendo como primeiro single a música “Lay It On Me”, Vance aborda, como o próprio nome indica relacionamentos, como veremos na análise faixa por faixa, track by track, nesse texto de estreia do “Track by Grass People”.
1. Call If You Need Me
Na faixa de abertura de seu álbum, Vance Joy resolve abrir as portas do seu coração e escancarar pra gente relacionamento sério em que  o protagonista, claramente um homem apaixonado, Brasil (I love you in the morning when the blood runs to your cheeks / Babe, you are the first thing and the last thing that I'd see), que demonstra confiança em seu amor, tomando cuidado em  não prender a pessoa, já que não existe qualquer tipo de relação saudável se um dos dois sufocar e impedir que o outro simplesmente seja, daí a gente vê no trecho:
“You can run and hide, babe
Like a bird you can take flight
If I've been holding on too tight
If I've been holding on”
Your mother always told us we should go out to the dance / You can't get struck by lightning if you're not standing in the rain).
“You were in the shower we were talking through the glass
Packing up your suitcase, you were humming to yourself
One day you were smiling
I could tell by how you sounded on the phone
2. Lay It On Me
“Let me in Everything starts at your skin, so new Your love's always finding me out Who am I kidding? If all my defences come down, oh baby Will you lay it all on me now? Lay it all on me now”
I found you hidden in plain sight, why'd I take so long?).
3. We're Going Home

“We're going home If we make it or we don't, we won't be alone When I see your light shine, I know I'm home If you're waiting all your life, you won't ever go When I see your light shine, I know I'm home”
You go, girl.
“Some things are simple and hard to ignore They say, hmm, the truth is like that We're getting colder, so far from the shore I say, hmm, the world is like that”
4. Saturday Sun
“Ba-ba, ba-ba Ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba”
Tumblr media
5. Take Your Time
O rapaz está apaixonado, esperando para que a pessoa amada o procure, o desvende (I'll let you figure me out / Tear all my fences down).
Menino Vance gosta das coisas simples da vida, aqui de novo ele mostra seu interesse pelo cotidiano, pelo dia-a-dia da relação (We'll go dancing in the kitchen / You fall in my arms) e que está ali pelo que a pessoa realmente é, mesmo que ela ainda não tenha notado (This kind of beauty ain't ordinary / You look, but do you really see?).
Mais uma vez, ele fala do inesperado (I'll admit I never saw you coming / Now I see your colors running) e, inesperadamente (HA), nessa música ele transmite uma agitação e ansiedade até então inéditas quando comparada com as anteriores, se liga nos trechos:
“There's an ocean inside my head
Waves that don't ever rest”
“Baby won't you let your phone keep ringing
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Won't you take your time on me?”
6. I'm With You
SOS. MORTA. SOCORRO. ICB.
“I saw you standing there Sandy blonde hair, the way it came tumbling down Just like a waterfall And if you need a light I'll be the match to your candle My darling, I'm ready, to burst into flames for you”
“Well I've been on fire, dreaming of you Tell me you don't It feels like you do Looking like that, you'll open some wounds How does it start? And when does it end? Only been here for a moment, but I know I want you But is it too soon? To know that I'm with you There's nothing I can do”
“And sometime around one
We fell asleep to escape from the sun
And we woke up to the sound of a storm outside
We stood at your front door
You looked at me and said "Baby, this rain changes everything"
And my heart ran away from me”
Tumblr media
7. Like Gold
“Time to let it go
It won't let go of me
Hanging by a thread
Cutting the cord and then falling back into the
Black 'cause if I don't
If I wait 'til it feels right
I'll be waiting my whole life
Closing my eyes, remember how we were like”
“Well, I got a feeling Darling, it's possible 'Cause love's got no ceiling Now, that it's just so strong And I got a feeling Like everything is possible I'm trying to change”
8. Alone With Me
“Here I am, saying things to you
I never thought that I'd I would say outside my head
Oh, and here we are
I'm doing things with you I never thought we'd do
I'm seeing into you”
“Everything's good
Everything's just as it should be
When you're alone with me
Everything's good
Everything's just as it should be
When we're alone”
“Oh, you're the shape of my days
Oh, you're my holy place
And I know”
Crashing Into You
“You were the one to visit my darkness
You were the brightest way”
“You dropped a stone into the well
We'd wait for the sound it made
When it got quiet, you could hear your heart
Tell me, what did it say?
I was a bird, you opened the cage
It felt like a clean white page” (QUE LINDO, BRASIL)
“You came along
You light up my days, my personal sun (MY. PERSONAL. SUN)
Showing me all the ways I could fall
You made me feel new
I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you
Baby, feel me crash
I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you
Baby, feel me crash”
QUEM NÃO QUER UM SOL PARTICULAR? QUEM CONCORDA RESPIRA.
10. One Of These Days
“The moment you stop looking
Wherever you go, you'll be in the right place
You'll never know the difference it makes
When you let go, and give up your chance
I'll come find you one of these days”
11. Little Boy
“We drove so slowly through these streets In the suburbs of our dreams At night my father closed his eyes He saw the new car in the drive My mother standing in the doorway Friday night, a smile on her face And the voice I can hear in my head”
“So we might as well say What's on our minds 'Cause there's no way to know When it's your time to go When it's your time to go There's no way to know”
Amo você, leitor/a.
13. Where We Start
E a faixa final desse álbum maravilhoso traz novamente a ideia da pessoa amada como porto seguro (You were my lover, you were my tree / You would always protect me), como aquele abrigo que tanto buscamos quando as coisas vão mal.
The second album by 30-year-old Australian Vance Joy arrives to follow in the footsteps of his successful debut in "Dream Your Life Away" from 2014, which featured the hit "Riptide", heard in 10/10 indie parties.
In this "Nation of Two", only 45 minutes long, released in February 2018, bringing the song "Lay It On Me" as its first single, Vance approaches, as the name itself indicates relationships, as we will see in the track by track analysis, in this debut text of "Track by Grass People".
1. Call If You Need Me
In the opening track of her album, Vance Joy decides to open the doors of her heart and open up for serious relationship people in which the protagonist, clearly a man in love, people! (I love you in the morning when the blood runs to your cheeks / Babe , you are the first thing and the last thing that I would see), which shows confidence in your love, being careful not to arrest the person, since there is no kind of healthy relationship if one of the two suffocates and prevent the other simply be, hence we see in the passage:
"You can run and hide, babe Like a bird you can take flight If I've been holding on too tight If I've been holding on "
At the same time, not allowing the relationship to enter a common place, to always keep refreshed in that feeling and more, risking being carried away without fear and thus letting good things happen. (Your mother always told us we should go out to the dance  / You can not get struck by lightning if you're not standing in the rain). What we like in this song is the daily feeling and intimacy between the two characters, excerpts such as:
"You were in the shower and were talking through the glass Packing up your suitcase, you were humming yourself One day you were smiling I could tell by how you sounded on the phone Yes, I'm coming home, babe" (HONESTLY, is there anything more beautiful than this ??)
And the notion of returning home, his home translated into the figure of the loved one. CRY.
This is the kind of music to listen to when you miss the sweetheart, the quiet folk beat makes us relax and feel welcomed. It's like a hug (:
2. Lay It On Me
The second song already starts with a more upbeat, upbeat, very optimistic. Vance is a romantic and in this song he shows the idea of a new beginning, a new relationship, a new season and all the possibilities that come together (Snow comes down, everything is new and different). Again he demonstrates the will to let things happen, to believe in the unexpected and in what it can bring from experience to the person.
In the refrain the singer plays, asking the person to put everything in it, whether good or bad, wanting to enjoy it to the fullest, with everything it has to offer, showing that it can not deceive or disguise:
“Let me in Everything starts at your skin, so new Your love's always finding me out. Who am I kidding? If all my defenses come down, oh baby Will you lay it on me now? Lay it all on me now "
You can see that classic situation in which you find the love where you least expect it, with whom you least expect it, in the way you least expected it, it was just a matter of being open (I found you hidden in plain sight, why'd I take so long?)
3. We're Going Home
Here we can already see a pattern in the album proposal, since the character brings back the idea of home, home, when he is with the loved one and the idea of playing, believing in the possibilities that a relationship has to offer, good or bad, since everyone goes through this, does not it?
"We're going home. If we make it or not, we will not be alone. When I see your light shine, I know I'm home If you're waiting all your life, you will not ever go When I see your light shine, I know I'm home "
In the next verse, Joy resolves to criticize the cold and gray society we live by stating that people are moving away, when in reality their feeling is of approximation, of belonging, ever greater, going exactly against what the world he says. You go, girl.
"Some things are simple and hard to ignore They say, hmm, the truth is like that We're getting colder, so far from the shore I say, hmm, the world is like that "
4. Saturday Sun
This is the famous cute song, easy lyrics, chewing gum, light and lively beat. In this song Vance portrays a love of summer, fleeting, uncompromising. Again, we observe the idea of not letting any opportunity pass for fear of surrender. All experiences are valid and make us grow. And this is it.
"Ba-ba, ba-ba Ba-ba, ba-ba-ba "
5. Take Your Time
If in the previous track Vance was talking about a wedding, in this track he is again our favorite lover boy. The boy is in love, waiting for the loved person to look for him, to unravel him (I'll let you figure me out).
Boy Vance likes the simple things in life, here again he shows his interest in everyday life, in the day-to-day relationship (We'll go dancing in the kitchen). person really is, even though she has not yet noticed (This kind of beauty is not ordinary / You look, but do you really see?).
Once again, he speaks of the unexpected and unexpectedly (HA), in this song he conveys a hitherto unprecedented agitation and anxiety when compared to previous ones, is linked in the sections:
"There's an ocean inside my head Waves that do not ever rest "
"Baby will not you let your phone ringing Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Will not you take your time on me? "
6. I'm With You SOS. DEAD. HELP. ICB.
Behold, we came to half the album and with a little Vance Joy blows it down everybody. With a letter of pure appreciation and love, this little (he's 1.93 meters tall) prince manages to put into a song feelings that we would all like to feel and share without fear.
This is one of those declarations of love to send to the boy and in this to win even more the beloved. It's hard to talk about this song, just take a look at this POETRY:
“I saw you standing there Sandy blonde hair, the way she came tumbling down Just like a waterfall And if you need a light I'll be the match to your candle My darling, I'm ready, to burst into flames for you "
Here the lover makes a comparison of the hair of the beloved to a waterfall, if it is arranged to be the match for his candle and to combust by his love. Please, right, everybody cries.
"Well I've been on fire, dreaming of you Tell me you do not It feels like you do Looking like that, you'll open some wounds How does it start? And when does it end? I've been here for a moment, but I know I want you. But it's too soon? I know that I'm with you There's nothing I can do "
In the chorus he continues to distribute kicks of emotion, but at this moment we perceive his insecurity in relation to another person not feeling the same way that he, in the same tune, who never? This fragility, this fear is what makes it even easier to identify and relate to the song.
"And sometime around one We fell asleep to escape from the sun And we woke up to the sound of a storm outside We stood at your front door You looked at me and said "Baby, this rain changes everything" And my heart ran away from me "
This stretch is beautiful. Sit down. Here the interpretation margin is very large and varies according to the time of each and every one. We grass people believe that metaphorically portrays the passage of this relationship, illustrating a change in those feelings of the couple, the "storm" that makes everything change and leaves the protagonist without ground, desolate.
We do not know what to say anymore, just to feel.
7. Like Gold
After punching him in the face, Vance comes with the song that can be titled "hi, gone". Here we see a relationship that is over, but the boy still thinks fondly about everything that has happened and nurtures a hope that maybe things can return, have one more chance.
"Time to let it go It will not let go of me Hanging by a thread Cutting the cord and then falling back into the Black 'cause if I do not If I wait 'til it feels right I'll be waiting my whole life Closing my eyes, remember how we were like "
"Well, I got a feeling Darling it's possible 'Cause love's got no ceiling Now, that's just so strong And I got a feeling Everything is possible I'm trying to change "
In this, we have an instrumental vibe very close to the track No. 4 ("Saturday Sun"), with an easy, catchy, and light-hearted refrain, so as not to let the climate of the term overpower the hope of returning. Even in bad, Vance continues good vibes.
8. Alone With Me
This is to send to your crush. It's to declare for good. Little Joy brings a slower, more boring beat, to make love and lie down in a shell.
The recurrent theme of trust, and of the person as safe place, house, home, refuge and warmth, special place and belonging return with force in this song, as we see in the passages below:
"Here I am, saying things to you I never thought I would say Oh, and here we are I'm doing things with you I never thought we'd do I'm seeing into you "
"Everything's good Everything's just as it should be When you're alone with me Everything's good Everything's just as it should be When we're alone "
"Oh, you're the shape of my days Oh, you're my holy place. And I know "
The protagonist here opens completely to another love, allowing itself new experiences that perhaps would not have, emphasizing how relationships always end up adding something, shaping you in some way and what is worth is the journey, not the destination (Clarice Lispector, 2022 ).
9. Crashing Into You
Behold, again Vance comes to make us suffer some more. What a beautiful letter. One more song to declare love. This time, the musician brings a more instrumental footprint, valuing his guitar and the band. Now, sit down and prepare yourself for these words:
"You were the one to visit my darkness You were the brightest way "
Honestly, right? Vance exposes himself, showing his vulnerability and the bad moment he was feeling, until a person arrives and illuminates a path he could not see, nor know that he existed.
“You dropped a stone into the well We would wait for the sound it made When it got quiet, you could hear your heart Tell me, what did you say? I was a bird, you opened the cage It felt like a clean white page " (WHAT A CUTE, BRAZIL)
“You came along You light up my days, my personal sun. Showing me all the ways I could fail You made me feel new I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you Baby, feel me crash I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you Baby, feel me crash "
WHO DOES NOT WANT A PARTICULAR SUN? WHO AGREES BREATHE. The idea of being so devoted to a person, that it enlightens your life, renews you, shows you the various ways you can fall in love is ________. It's those little words that can put Vance Joy on a level above.
10. One Of These Days
Who has never found the right person at the wrong time or the wrong person at the right time?
Maintaining the album's optimism, Vance portrays a passion that was not to happen at that moment, despite all the potential that existed there and tries to guide and encourage the person, whatever way she chooses, even if it distances them.
When he says that a person should seek knowledge of himself, his ways, his answers, he again stresses the issue of the freedom of individuals, not to arrest someone for the simple fact of loving it and, if it is to be so , will meet one of these days. Things happen the moment they have to happen, it is no use insisting, searching or being frustrated.
"The moment you stop looking Wherever you go, you'll be in the right place You'll never know the difference it makes When you let go and give up your chance I'll come and find you one of these days "
11. Little Boy
Probably the most unsettling song of the album's theme, Vance Joy tells of a childhood cause, a fall of a bicycle where, from this, will appreciate the small things, the small moments of the daily life, something already portrayed previously, however here valuing the smile of the mother, the words of the father and the comfort of his family.
"We drove so slowly through these streets In the suburbs of our dreams At night my father closed his eyes I saw the new car in the drive My mother standing in the doorway Friday night, a smile on her face And the voice I can hear in my head "
We can also notice the more root instrumental, rustic, with a folk footprint, differing from the rest of the album.
12. Bonnie & Clyde
So Vance Joy is watching "Bonnie & Clyde" with crush, feeling guilty about spending a sunny day in the movies, at that time he decides to pick up his notepad and write that song when the couple dies (spoiler alert ) he realizes that in a relationship, it is better to talk what you think, not hide things, say I love you, yes, because you will never know the time to leave.
"So we might as well say What's our minds? 'Cause there's no way to know When is your time to go When is your time to go There's no way to know "
I love you, reader.
13. Where We Start
And the final track of this wonderful album brings back the idea of the beloved person as a safe haven, like that shelter we're looking for when things go wrong.
And the value of small things, Vance is a humble boy, he likes to appreciate and make us think of taking these little moments and remember them, not letting them go unnoticed, after all, let's live everything there is to live, let's allow ourselves (SANTOS, Lulu).
"Nation of Two" is an album that makes us appreciate the small and important things of life, attention to the details of daily life, the search for a safe harbor, a home, a love. To value our passions, our relationships and all that they have to offer us, to grow and mature us and, above all, not to be afraid of the new, of the unexpected. PLAY.
The shape of the grass:
Here, we will do a scale of differentiated punctuation. If we like the album, it will receive the quote "low grass", the one that is perfect to lie down and listen to your music. Otherwise, the quote is "tall grass", watch out for the snakes and insects that hide in it.
Music with the lowest grass: I'm With You (could not be different). Music with the Highest Grass: Bonnie & Clyde
So people-grass all over the Nation, Vance Joy's back yard is with: LOW GRASS <3
