Authorizing a license

Children lured by high-cost ringtone lines By Jon Ungoed-Thomas The tunes are widely available on the internet and cost up to £4.50 to order on a premium rate line, charged to a child’s parents’ phone bill. Consumer groups are calling for stricter controls on the lines. Industry analysts predict that children aged between five and 15 will spend more than £130m this year on downloading ringtones. One ringtone — the Crazy Frog — has become so popular that it is being sold as a CD and is expected to reach the number one spot in the charts today by outselling the latest Coldplay single. Graham Brown, of Wireless World Forum, a research body, said young children obtain the ringtones by calling the premium rate lines or sending a text message themselves, or they get their older siblings to do it for them. The website of Radio Times, the BBC listings magazine, offers ringtones from popular children’s programmes, including Roobarb and Custard, Bob the Builder and Thunderbirds. Some children are lured by an initial free download, without realising that subsequent downloads are at a premium rate. Steve Bungay, 38, who lives near Andover, Hampshire, said: “My 11-year-old son downloaded a ringtone on his mobile, but didn’t realise he was also subscribing to three additional downloads a month at £1.50 a time. “We sent a message asking them to stop the service and they sent back a message saying ‘mistyped’. We eventually stopped the messages, but it’s wrong that a child can order something like this just using their phones.” Under industry guidelines, all premium rate text message services can be stopped by texting the word “stop” back. The Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services (ICSTIS) can fine companies and bar services that do not comply with its code of practice. Most mobile phones, however, do not have the facility to bar calls to premium rate lines. Alan Williams, of Which?, the consumer group, said: “You should be able to block these premium lines from being called on a mobile in the same way you can on a BT line at home.”

The Master of Science (MS) program is intended for people who wish to broaden and deepen their understanding of computer science. Columbia University and the New York City environment provide excellent career opportunities with multiple industries. The program provides a unique opportunity to develop leading-edge in-depth knowledge of specific computer science disciplines. Satisfy breadth requirements.

Take at least 6 points of technical courses at the 6000-level.

App Notes

Passwords Not Saved Between PCs By Default: Google Chrome stores passwords in such a way that they are encrypted in a way tied to current PC. While the passwords are not kept or left behind on the PC itself, they won't be retrievable when you move to a new PC. We've added password portability as an advanced option, though, which you can enable by reading the help.html file.

Certificates Not Portable: Google Chrome has no certificate manager. It uses Windows' certificates manager. So, any certificates you install through the Google Chrome interface are stored on the current local machine and will not travel with you. Thus, you should not use any private certificates with Google Chrome except on your own PC.

Some Settings Locked Per PC: Google Chrome locks specific settings to a given PC. Details are included in this post. This behavior is by design by the Chrome team. If you would like this changed, please file a bug with the Chrome team. A suggested workaround is to sign in to Google to restore all settings and extensions and to use an extension such as Session Buddy to maintain your session state as you move PCs. Note that PortableApps.com has not evaluated this extension.

Note that other portable browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition do not have any of the issues mentioned above. These issues are specific to Chrome due to Chrome's design and not something we can work around without fixes to the base app by the Chrome developers.

For centuries, man had attempted to harness the mechanical power of heat and water. As early as 200 BC, in his Pneumatica, Hero of Alexandria described a device called an Aeolipile, considered to be the first recorded steam engine. A ball containing water was mounted over a cauldron and, as it heated, two protruding bent tubes shot out jets of steam, causing the ball to spin. Many such devices were conceived in the following centuries as scientists studied the principles of hydraulics, pneumatics, and the properties of gasses, but these devices did not perform real work. It was not until the 18th century in Britain that the steam engine began to change not only the face of industry, but humanity's relationship to work and society.

How a Newcomen Engine Works Water is boiled to create steam that pushes upward on a piston in a cylinder. The piston rod is attached to a crossbeam and as the piston rises, the weight of a pump rod hung on the opposite end of the beam pulls downward. When the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, a jet of water is injected into the piston cylinder causing the steam to condense, sucking the piston back down. The cooling water drains out and the cycle repeats indefinitely.

In 1712 , Thomas Newcomen and his assistant John Cally unveiled the first commercially viable steam engine. The Newcomen atmospheric engine used steam to power a pump. Though it was not very efficient, hundreds of these engines were used for pumping water from British coal mines and flooded areas.

Trevithick wrote on February 21, 1804, after the trial of his High Pressure Tram-Engine, that he 'carry'd ten tons of Iron, five wagons, and 70 Men..above 9 miles..in 4 hours and 5 Mints.' Though a ponderous-sounding journey, it was the first step toward an invention that would utterly change man's relationship to time and space.

George Stephenson and his son, Robert, built the first practical steam locomotive. Stephenson built his 'travelling engine' in 1814, which was used to haul coal at the Killingworth mine. In 1829, the Stephensons built the famous locomotive Rocket, which used a multi-tube boiler, a practice that continued in successive generations of steam engines. The Rocket won the competition at the Rainhill Trials held to settle the question of whether it was best to move wagons along rails by fixed steam engines using a pulley system or by using locomotive steam engines. The Rocket won the £500 prize with its average speed of 13 miles per hour (without pulling a load, the Rocket attained speeds up to 29 miles per hour), beating out Braithwaite and Erickson's Novelty and Timothy Hackworth's Sans Pareil. The Stephensons incorporated elements into their engines that were used in succeeding generations of steam engines.

Stephenson's Patent Locomotive Engine

Though the first locomotive to operate on an American railroad was the Stourbridge Lion, built in 1828 and imported from England by Horatio Allen of New York, the British locomotives did not come to dominate American railways because they were too heavy for the relatively light and often uneven American tracks. In fact, the Lion was soon relegated to functioning as a stationary steam engine.

American inventors and engineers had been on a parallel course with the British and, as early as 1812, John Stevens had petitioned Congress to support a national railroad. He had also built the first American steam locomotive in 1825. A multi-tube boiler engine, it ran on a circular demonstration track on his property in Hoboken, New Jersey. Though he was not successful in getting financial support for a national railroad or his locomotive, Stevens later founded one of America's first railroads, the Camden & Amboy Railroad.

Peter Cooper'sTom Thumb, built in 1830, was the first American locomotive to pull a passenger car on a railroad. Though small it was powerful enough to convince the directors of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad of the practical application of the steam locomotive.

The distinction of being the first to pull a train of cars over an American railroad in regular service goes to the Best Friend of Charleston in 1831. Designed by E. L. Miller and built in New York, the Best Friend operated for nearly six months until its boiler exploded when a worker, who was irritated by the sound of the hissing steam, lashed down a safety valve.

The year 1831 also saw Matthias Baldwin establish the Baldwin Locomotive Works. His second steam engine, the E.L. Miller, established the prototype from which later engines developed. By the end of the 19th century, Matthias Baldwin's company became the largest single-plant locomotive builder in the world and dominated the market for over one hundred years, manufacturing approximately 59,000 locomotives.

The first locomotives were built with fixed wheels, which worked well on straight tracks but not so well in America's mountainous terrain. An American civil engineer, John Jervis, designed the locomotive the Experiment in 1832, which had a swiveling four-wheeled guide truck, also known as a 'bogie,' that could follow the track and enable locomotives to travel on railways with tighter curves.

Locomotive America built by the Grant Locomotive Works, of Paterson, N. J., for the 1867 Paris Exposition, a standard American 4-4-0 locomotive of the mid-19th century.

The pilot, or 'cow catcher,' was unique to American locomotives. The rail lines were not fenced and the railroad companies were responsible for any damage done by a collision with an animal, which could derail a locomotive. The John Bull, in about 1833, was one of the first locomotives in America to be fitted with such a device to clear obstacles off the track. Soon, pilots became standard appliances for American locomotives.

Locomotives could be configured in a number of ways, categorized by the wheel arrangement of the leading truck, driving wheels, and the trailing truck. The 4-4-0 configuration (that is, four wheels on the leading truck and four driving wheels, with no trailing truck), was most commonly used in the U.S and came to be known as the American Standard. The locomotives that met at Promontory Summit, the Central Pacific's Jupiter and the Union Pacific's Engine No. 119, were both 4-4-0 locomotives.

American manufacturers produced locomotives equal in capacity to British engines, but at lower cost. Though American engines were elaborately decorated with expensive brass work and labor costs were higher than in Britain, American manufacturers reduced costs by using less expensive cast iron rather than wrought iron for many components. America's railroads began by using locomotives imported from Britain, but by the end of the 19th century, America was a major producer of locomotives and had exported more than 2,900 engines.

Steam Trains

It is not an exaggeration to say that steam power and locomotives had the same transformative effect in the 19th century that the computer had in the 20th. Robert Thurston, in his 1878 book on the history of the steam engine, said that it would be 'superfluous to attempt to enumerate the benefits which it has conferred upon the human race, for such an enumeration would include an addition to every comfort and the creation of almost every luxury that we now enjoy.'

1. Take a Short Da’wah Course

You can contact a da’wah organisation that can guide you on how to give da’wah to individuals from various backgrounds in a variety of situations. These courses are not particularly time consuming and most organisations will provide it for free as well, so cost is not a problem.

For those based in the UK, I highly recommend IERA, which specialises in offering free and focused training for Muslims in different parts of the UK. It offers sharp techniques that involve using logic, common sense, reasoning and evidence from the Qur’an and authentic hadith.

For my brothers and sisters outside the UK, it is worth spending a few minutes on the Internet researching for organisations in your area or country that offer a similar service. If there really is nothing available, then you can always look for online courses where there is plenty of material accessible.

2. Pass on a CD or Book

This is an easy and effective solution to those who feel they do not have sufficient knowledge or even know where to start when having a conversation about Islam. Giving a CD of an experienced Da’ee (caller to Islam) who is able to break down the fundamentals of Islam in a logical manner may be better for you. Without the necessary skills and application of giving da’wah, we may actually hinder the effort of bringing someone towards Islam and trip ourselves up and more importantly, say something we may regret. If you are worried about this, direct them to someone more knowledgeable. Nevertheless, do not let this put you off from speaking to someone by giving da’wah and telling others about the greatness of Allah .

Offering a translated copy of the Qur’an is probably the most effective device you can give to someone. You will not find a better read in the world than the Qur’an (and you can tell them that too!).

There may be times when you engage in da’wah using excellent logic and examples, but the other person is just not interested. The Qur’an is very powerful and it will have an effect on a person’s heart and therefore it is something we should not underestimate. Consequently, it is a good idea to let people have a copy of the Qur’an and read at their leisure.

3. Inform Others About an Upcoming Class or Conference

This can be achieved through various means, for example word of mouth. You can tell people, Muslims or non-Muslims, about a local event that is taking place or the upcoming visit of a famous sheikh. This is something that can be done through modern means i.e. reminders sent by text messages, posting information on your Facebook/Twitter account, and any other means which you feel is effective in reaching people.

More traditional methods can be used if you prefer those. For example, you can distribute leaflets to different Islamic centres where they can hand them out to big crowds of people, such as at Jumu’ah prayers. Most large conferences will also have special invites for non-Muslims. Try to encourage a non-Muslim to go along with you by promoting it as a pleasant evening out with plenty of free food available!

4. Look at Improving Your Character

Improving your character would be one of the most effective ways of indirectly giving da’wah. By showing high excellence, manners and conduct at all times, those around you are likely to be drawn to you as a person, and therefore, towards Islam. A person with poor character is not likely to have any credibility, despite you telling them how beautiful and wonderful Islam is. Many rewards of a good character can be acquired not only in this life but more importantly, the next. As the Prophet Muhammad said:

“Nothing is heavier on the Scale of Deeds than one’s good manners.” (Tirmidhi)

A tip to help you improve your character is to study the seerah of Prophet Muhammad , where you will find the best of examples. We can also study the behaviour and mannerisms of the companions of the Prophet , as well as the pious people of the previous generations. It is also worth looking online for lectures regarding improving your character and how significant and pleasing to Allah having a good character is. Additionally, we should supplicate to Allah to help us work on our weaknesses and to positively develop our character.

5. Arrange to Post Lectures Online/Live Stream from Your Local Islamic Centre

This largely applies to centres that do not already have this facility. You would be able to create a stronger link between the local Islamic centre and the local community by providing materials to those who may not be able to regularly attend gatherings. This is also an effective tool to help prevent you from being of those that withhold knowledge, as the Prophet Muhammad said:

“Whoever hides knowledge, Allah will brand him with the branding iron from the hellfire.” (Tirmidhi)

This may take a bit of your time initially, but if there is anything you can think of starting that will benefit the people then, In sha Allah, this will be a sound investment of your time.

6. Engage Yourself in Charity Work

A great benefit of this is that it will count as sadaqah for you In sha Allah. I am sure there are many forms of charity work you can get involved in your local area e.g. the old and disadvantaged, or working with causes supporting the environment, animals, individuals with physical and mental disabilities etc. Taking part in noble causes is also an effective way of helping to remove misconceptions about Islam.

Moreover, this is something that was part of the Prophet Muhammad’s life, as he fought for people’s rights before becoming a prophet. This made the acceptance of his message easier among his people as they were well aware of his true nobility, exalted character and mannerisms prior to his message.

People are likely to respond positively to your da’wah and have an open mind about your message. Those witnessing your upright character may become curious about Islam and then research about the teachings of Islam themselves. Finally, getting involved in charity work should provide you with great opportunities within your career and thus providing you with success in this life and the hereafter.

7. Try to Integrate Islam into Your Life as Much as You Can

This means that you live and breathe Islam. So whether you are at the park, in the masjid or workplace, you have a consciousness of Allah and what you should and should not be doing. This can be achieved by making sure you maintain the physical appearance of a believer e.g. maintaining a beard, wearing a hijab etc. This is important because how you dress and look will impact greatly on how you feel. Consequently, how you feel will affect your speech and conduct.

Studies have shown that clothing affects how we think about ourselves as well as how others perceive us. If you are in clothing that indicates modesty, the chances are your thoughts and actions will be modest, which can help improve your character.

Having Islam in your life continuously will make it easy for you to do that which is pleasing to Allah and consequently, this will impact positively on your character. As a result, you can indirectly give da’wah and help to leave a positive impression of Islam and also remain alert to potential da’wah opportunities.

To practically help you integrate Islam into your daily life at the workplace, for example, is by keeping Islamic material with you at all times such as books or an Islamic calendar that you can keep at your desk and are visible to others. This makes your job of giving da’wah easier, as this allows others to initiate a conversation and ask about Islam. A great advantage of allowing somebody else to start a conversation is you do not have to start the conversation, which can be difficult to do with some people and therefore seen to be simply ‘preaching’. Little things such as these allow opportunities to be created and therefore making the da’wah easier.

Another idea is to bring food into the workplace/class on a special Islamic occasion e.g. Eid. People will naturally ask what the occasion is and therefore create an opportunity to give da’wah. This is a very useful tool as people always respond positively to food!

Furthermore, ensure you are praying in the workplace/class when the time for salah arrives. Try to speak to a manager/senior staff member to arrange for a room where you can pray if there is not already one there and let them know salah is very important to you. By highlighting this, those around you are likely to respect you more In sha Allah and hopefully it will open their hearts to Islam.

Lastly, if you are using public transport, be sure to have reading material with you. You will be using your time productively by seeking knowledge as well as potentially creating a da’wah situation where other passengers may be curious about what you are reading.

8. Obtain a Small Booklet About Common Questions About Islam

If it is not practical for you to attend a da’wah course, then having a booklet is a quick and easy way to know the types of questions running through the minds of non-Muslims about Islam. In sha Allah, this will provide you with confidence and the start-up knowledge in the field of da’wah. You can usually find them from local Islamic centres and also, for those in the UK, IDCI can provide cheap and effective da’wah material to help get you started.

9. Keep it Simple!

If you are speaking to a non-Muslim, try to mention the simplicity of the religion and what it requires to be a Muslim e.g. believing in one God, acknowledging the Qur’an as a direct revelation from God, and recognising Muhammad as the Messenger of God.

People may try to ask you lots of questions regarding Islam. For example, “Why does Islam allow such and such?” An effective response is to say, “I can answer that, but you need to understand Islam as a package. So if you have a few minutes I can answer that for you.” This is when you can start giving da’wah about the Creator and the greatness of Allah and create the beautiful picture of Islam.

Additionally, this approach applies to Muslims. When giving da’wah, it may suffice to remind others about the greatness of Allah , His names and attributes and to remind others of His favours and blessings. Keeping a simple approach makes your job easier and helps to avoid conflicts and philosophical debates.

Well as I am almost done with the original track update, someone on this forum sent me 2 tracks asking to take a look at them. They are basically broken and useless for now. I got to thinking, maybe just MAYBE I can take my track editing to another level. I want to try and fix the 'broken' tracks of NR2003. So i wanted to see if you guys could send me tracks via links on this thread. Maybe this can bring some of the other nr2003 players back to this community or even new people to the game. I'm not sure, but I would like to try and fix these tracks! Not sure when or even if I can fix them but I am willing to try over time. Also, tracks that need graphics updates or mips and such might be last on my list. I've been wanting to learn how to do all of that and I have somewhat of an idea not am not experienced with that yet. So with that being said send me any links you have! The message I received was for Melbourne. So i am working on that track and it is a pain! Haha.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I haven’t blogged in months. It should be expected by now, lol. There’s been a ton of things that’s happened since my last blog, much too many to write about here. Basically in the end, a bunch of things went down, none of it really bad, and I just neglected the blog for a while, and I’ll end up neglecting it again. But as the title of this post suggests, I’m slowly returning to my old ways. What does that actually mean to anyone that reads this? Well, let me think here…

I’m a fan of the racing sim NASCAR Racing: 2003 Season (NR2003), this blog was intended to showcase work I do for the game, provide me a private space to share files, and allow me to blog any ongoing projects. Instead I kinda posted a lot of stuff on other topics, which I’m sure I’ll do in the future as well, but hopefully not as much. So with that said, I’ve been working on a project that is mainly intended for NR2003, but anyone can enjoy this one. I’ve been making some new Sprint Cup Series models. It’s a big project for me, 5 makes in total. I just got tired of not having something that was much more accurate to the real cars to play with. Originally I wanted to get back into painting a few cool cars I seen from the 2016 NASCAR season, and I found out the models we had, just were not accurate. It forced me to change the scheme a bit, much of which was a pain because it really was quite a intricate paint job. so much of what I recreated after using photos for reference didn’t fit on the model. This was the reason why I quit painting cars in the first place. So instead of doing a half-ass conversion and ruining the original artist’s interpretation, I decided I’d just go ahead and make my own damn model. I made the Chevy SS and was just gonna leave it at that, but I had a lot of fun that I haven’t had in a long while so I decided to make even more models. In the end, I made 5 models total, the 2016 Chevy SS, 2016 Dodge Charger, 2016 Ford Fusion, 2016 Toyota Camry, and even the 2018 Toyota Camry. The models were a blast to make, especially the Charger. Seeing Dodge pulled out of NASCAR a few years back, I had freedom to kinda freestyle how I think it would look in NASCAR trim. And I feel I nailed the look. Even if I didn’t, the model looks bad ass nonetheless.

You can’t be a NASCAR fan and not love the looks of that, lol. So far, the bodies are complete, the mapping is mainly complete, though I might have to add a couple of things before release, and I’m almost done with the chassis and interior for the Chevy. These models, once finished, will be posted online for all to enjoy. I will be including the models (3ds Max 2009, 8 formats and obj), textures, and whatever else is required. They will be free to use for non-commercial use only, so you can use them in other games, apps, or whatever as long as you’re not profiting from them in any way, shape, or form. And you can bet your ass, they work in NR2003, I’ve already tested them in there. I did this once before with the Xfinity Series cars. only difference is they did not have any textures, it was just the bodies, rollcage, and wheels. In fact, here’s the link if anyone wants them…

These weren’t perfectly modeled, but they’re pretty damn good. In fact, I’ve actually started updating the models a little because I came across some reference to help make them way more accurate. But I won’t be able to get to them all till a while after I’m done with the Sprint Cup Series models.

So for now, this is what I’ve been doing with my time. I’ve returned to my NR2003 roots, and man I can’t wait till this project is finished and people can get a up close and personal look at these models. I hope people get to enjoy them as much as I enjoyed making them. Catch ya’s later. 🙂
