because there's never enough of space
vimeo
‘ Motion Designer Christian worked with his brother and Composer Wolfgang for 18 months on this shortfilm. The foundation were thousands original NASA photographies, taken from the Astronauts during the Apollo Missions, which were released in September 2015. It is an animated collage using different techniques to bring the stills to life’.

Christian Faubel & Ralf Schreiber
When we are pretty much done with major projects..but things are still happening out there. Stuff to see -  Christian Faubel & Ralf Schreiber : Analogue Utopia, Almost like Music + Q&A. Splice Festival, 29/05
‘They make music with machines and electronic circuits that function according to their very own logic, exploring the tonality of material and the very materiality of sound. As they explain “we want to give voices to things, and do so by careful manipulation of the machines and their surroundings”. For the audience, this process is made transparent by placing the machines under an overhead projector, so that their movements cast a silhouette, a kind of ‘shadow play’. As they conclude “Similar to live coding it’s our improvisation with the machines that matters. It’s a live experimentation in search for patterns, musical structures and minimal techno that we like to dance to”.

Tracking debris - the final post
Deadline is near and this is time for some thoughts.
Whiteout help of some people this project wouldn't exist. The person who helped me almost entire with the code was Pawel Stepnowski, who dedicated his time for it and eventually end up in the hospital (not because of the project). But i realized it is good to have friends who can always help but this project become too complicated and too much time consuming for a person who has a full time job. So the conclusions for future - hire the person who do programming as you cant always control the other person who help you just ‘in the name of friendship’.
Other thing is - it was hard to predict when is something is going to work or not - most of the time it wouldn't. It was really frustrating, and sometimes it would need few hours to figure out that the thing responsible for error was a wire or sometimes unknown reason ( for example problems with rebooting RPI  that it would take sometimes over an hour to reboot).
But overall it was  pleasant journey and i’m glad that i gain some knowledge about RPI, how to connect devices, how to run simple codes, how to weld or solder and build simple things in 3dworkshop. And whiteout a long list of people this project wouldn't be possible.

Two last days
Just hanging the last objects, and checking the code. Unfortunately one servo wouldn't work and after checking all the options it is the jumper cable to blame.
But this is not the biggest problem, was the code that my friend was working on, somehow it stopped working so the servos still get the signal but it is not possible to see the map. We might need to return to the older version or just present the work whiteout the map.

Relay finally connected to the pi and its working but the code need to be change so it goes from LOW to HIGH as it shown in the code here

Trying to connect the 4 channel relay with using this tutorial on the bottom of this post. Instead of one small led light i would use string lights, connected to relay, and then to RPI.

Servos !!
So i decided to connect servos to Gpios number - 2,11.18 and 23 but then somehow number 2 didint work so i have to change it for gpio number 4.
For lights i used gpio 5m and then connected to the relay.

schedules and problems
Even then i created a schedule with the dates and made plans for those days not everything went that i planned. for example, it was impossible  to access the room during the Easter and bank holiday, witch  strongly limited my time. Also other people who have the access to the room at the same time are not always stick to time, and sometimes it happened that i had to wait till they finish couple oh hours.. Not to mention problems with postal services.

First day in the room + collecting scrapes
Unfortunately i couldn't access the room during the Easter weekend ( for reasons beyond my control) and so i was forced to enter the room very late - which is 18 of of april ( not the date that i tough i could enter the room - which was 13th of april).
Luckily on that day more mash has arrived so i could cut it to the pieces that would fit to the installation. That took sometime as i was alone in the metal fabrication room and i had to wait for someone to give me an access to the tool -  which was if im not wrong - angle grinder.  Then i moved 4 pieces of mash to the room - Ag 07, and also 4 pieces from the cage - lighter pieces, as the base of the cage and the top are to heave to carry them just by one person.
Also that day i recived a nice amount of the scraps - few from Radu - Av technician, and Arron Kay - he showed me where i can find some scraps, where i found a nice. old sewing machine and also other nice gadgets.
On that day i met Farah, and we agreed on which site each of us is going to present our work. I located mash on the floor so i could see how big is going to be and where is is best to place it. Now i have to wait for the person who will help me with assembling the cage so i can start hanging the objects.

Types of wires and which one to choose
Using wire for art and sculpture
The most important consideration when hanging a work of art is weight. From a safety point of view it is advisable to hang any object with wire that is specified for several times the weight it is carrying. When hanging lights in public spaces it
is typical for the strength of the wire to be specified at four times its capability to suspend the  tting. The same consideration should be applied when hanging artworks.

Making the base and metal cage
The room.
I wrote down all the measurements of the room and all the set doors i have to enter when i was transporting the base ( cage) of the installation. It was important to do it accurately so the base would fit in the door and avoid any future problems.

Plans and measurements for the cage :

Cutting metal rods :

And welding it together :

The mash from that i will use on the top of installation to suspend the objects  :
Tumblr media
Putting all the pieces of the top of the cage together, to weld it correctly:
Tumblr media
cutting down the mash to match the top of the cage:
Tumblr media
Welding the brackets to hold metal bars so the whole piece can stand and not colapse:
Tumblr media
Set of welded brackets. I had to put numbers on it so i wont confused later after putting it to parts and putting on together again.
Tumblr media
drilling the wholes in the bars for screws.
Tumblr media
almost ready... for that day we were done. i needed only to cut the mash ( when it was  delivered ).

Total cost of the materials :  £100

Problems with the hat
When the hat looked like the best solution - the quickest way to connect a large amount of servos to RPI - just exactly what i needed at this point - it gave me the the most problems and stress. After testing it for few days and trying to find out why is it not connecting with PI i decided to contact the company that produces that shield (Adafruit). I specified all the problems ( overheating even if i was using different sources of power). After many emails and few days they sent me a new hat but from USA (where company has its office) so it took 7 days to come to uk and unfortunately it was lost on the post, so i had to buy another one.. After couple of days i recived my new shield but it was too late to install it and trying the code as we decided with Pawel that we will reduce number of  servos to 4 and just connect the directly to the PI ( with 220ohm resistor and battery pack).
