A few days ago I went to guédelon and it was the most amazing thing ever
Over the last twenty years they have been working on building a medieval fortress by hand with building methods that would have been used in the 13. century. They expect to be done in about six or seven years
The castle is 'standardized' because about a thousand castles were build at the same time by King Phillip II. as a defnece against the english

It already looks beautiful just like that

The even move the stones around on little carriages that have to be moved by two people

Even all the safety structures are made by hand and out of wood (while they are safe just like that, they have to be screwed together as well so they are up to today's standards)
This will be the highest and most secure tower where the owner would escape to, should the castle be under siege. It has its own water and works mostly independent from the rest of the castle.

These are the wheels used to lift the stones and get them to the top of the wall. They are still moved by people walking inside and the only thing they added was a break so it's safer otherwise this is a complete reconstruction

The small chapel has the most beautiful window which was made completely by hand and it's so symmetrical it's unbelievable
Also there was a little nest of swallows in the chapel which made it extra amazing

The great hall is the only room with very big windows which made the room very lovely and bright. Below the great hall is the storage connected to the kitchen. Above the kitchen behind the great hall is a guest room which would be the warmes room since the cooking fire would be burning below it.

The guest room also had beautiful paintings and the even made the pigment for it themselves
There was so much more and it was so interesting I could have stayed there forever. Anyone who is interested in medieval history and has a chance to go there should definitely do that
I'm gonna stop now because tumblr won't let me add any more pictures and I have way too much to say about this because they showed so much amazing stuff

After talking to a friend yesterday about our mutual love of TSOA and how she wished there were more classics-y fiction type books, I’m here to relay the good news that there are!
So here’s a list of books that retell classical stories from different (and potentially feminist!!) perspectives.
1. Circe- Madeline Miller
- the life of Circe, the witch from the Osyssey and the Aeneid, told in her own words
2. The silence of the girls- Pat Barker
- a retelling of the Iliad from the perspective of Briseis, a priestess of Apollo.
3. Lavinia- Ursula K. Le Guin
- a retelling of the Aeneid through the eyes of Lavinia, the daughter of the kind of Latium
4. The children of Jocasta- Natalie Haynes
- a retelling of the Oedipus and Antigone myth with a focus on Jocasta and Ismene
5. Autobiography of Red- Anne Carson
- slightly different to the rest, more of a reimagination than an interpretation of the relationship between Hercules and Geryon in poetry.
6. For the winner- Emily Hauser
- a retelling of the myth of Jason and the Argonauts, with an added appearance from our girl Atlanta.
7. A thousand ships - Natalie Haynes
- a retelling of the Trojan war from a female perspective. Also gives one of the most underappreciated women of the Aeneid, Creusa, a voice!
8. For the immortal- Emily Hauser
- a retelling of Hercules’ 9th labour in which he’s accompanied by Admete, daughter of the king of Tiryns
9. Galatea- Madeline Miller
- a short story retelling the myth of Pygmalion and Galatea
10. For the most beautiful- Emily Hauser
- similar to ‘The silence of the girls’ this book retells the Trojan war through the stories of Krisayis and Briseis
11. The Penelopiad- Margaret Atwood
- a retelling of the Odyssey focusing on the story of Penelope, Odysseus’ wife
12. The horror of the Helmet- Victor Pelevin
- a radical reinvention of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur presented through modern internet exchanges.
13. Girl meets boy- Ali Smith
- a modern reinvention of the story of Iphis, taken from Ovid’s metamorphoses.
14. Weight- Jeannette Winterson
- a modern retelling of the myth of Atlas and Hercules. An examination of choice and coercion.
15. Where three roads meet- Sally Vickers
- Set partly in pre-war London and partly in Ancient Greece feauturing Sigmund Freud as Oedipus and a stranger as Tiresias. A complete reimagination of the Greek myth of Oedipus and Freud’s Oedipus complex.
16. The fire gospel- Michel Faber
- more of an analogy for the myth of Prometheus than a retelling but still excellent.
17. The memoirs of Helen of Troy- Amanda Elyot
- our girl Helen finally given a voice in this exploration of the events leading up to the Trojan war
18. XO Orpheus: fifty new myths- Kate Bernheimer
- a collection of short retellings of myths, very similar to Galatea by Madeline Miller (which is feautured in the book)
19. Home fire- Kamila Shamsie
- a modern retelling of the story of Antigone that centres around an immigrant family. A modern Greek Tragedy.
20. For her dark skin- Percival Everett
- super funny retelling of the myth of Jason and Medea. Out of print so copies are insanely expensive but you can get it on kindle for £6 :)
21. House of names- Colm Tóibín
- an exploration of the story of the house of Atreus from the sacrifice of Iphigenia to the murder of Clytemnestra
22. The autobiography of Cassandra, princess and prophetess of Troy- Ursule Molinaro
- retelling of the story of Troy through the eyes of Cassandra
I’ll be adding to this list the more I find but feel free to add your own x

I Had a Full Ride Scholarship and I Still Can’t Go to College.
I’m not an idiot.
I knew more than anything that deciding to go to art school was a dumb idea. Which is why I applied to 40 schools, both liberal arts and universities and art schools. And I got in to about 30 of them. I applied to every scholarship, filled out every form, spent the entire summer before my senior year working on my essays and common applications and studying until I finally got a 30 on my ACT. Because to me, college isn’t just the next step in life. Art school isn’t just a dream. It’s an opportunity to break out of the cycle of poverty that my family has been stuck in for generations, to overcome the scars of the foster care system, to prove to myself that I was good enough. College was my way out. And I got accepted into 30 of the schools I applied to, with different scholarships and financial aid packages and even after all my hard work, I still couldn’t believe it. I got into SCAD, Ringling, Columbia, CALARTS, CCO, and RISD. And out of all the schools, I had never felt more relieved or lucky when RISD sent me my financial aid letter, and it was a full ride scholarship.
All the other schools offered me scholarships, but RISD was my only full ride. So I took it immediately, overjoyed, because I had wanted so baldy to go to RISD and now I actually could.
But I can’t go.
Because my scholarship didn’t cover room and board, something I overlooked in my excitement. And room and board is about $10,000 per semester.
I have been calling and emailing and skyping people from the school nonstop for weeks, switching to the cheapest dorm and getting multiple roomates and working my ass off to try and pay for these impending costs. And I thought I had managed to do it: Finally, after everything, with a payment plan and insurance waiver and sleepless, anxious nights, I got down to about $7,500 a semester. With the money I had saved and been gifted from my Grandfather and outside scholarships, I thought I’d be able to make my first payment, immediately get a night shift job at a fast food restaurant near campus that was open 24 hours, and be able to JUST make it in terms of the money I owed for room and board.
But again, no. It wasn’t enough. It’s still not enough. And that’s the problem: It’s never going to be enough. I just had to use up half the money I had saved on emergency expenses so that my family wouldn’t lose our home, and I feel like dying. I would have to pay off about $1,500 every 3 weeks all year, which means working at least 8 hours full time every day including weekends, minimum wage, and still attending classes full time and not dropping below a certain grade point for fear of my scholarship being revoked. And even then I don’t think It would be enough. I have a full ride scholarship, and college is still too expensive for me.
I have submitted an appeal to live off campus in a last ditch effort to go to school, but it’s mandatory for freshmen to live on campus unless they’re 21 (I’m NOT.) or have family that live close. (Nope.) And even then, it’s strongly discouraged. They rarely, if ever, allow you to live off campus. The cheapest possible living option for me is 45 minutes away in a 1 bedroom place. And I’m more than willing to live there if it means I can go to school, I don’t have a car so I’ll have to take the bus or walk 45 minutes everyday (which I’m willing to do,) so I’m just praying that they read my appeal and let me. Because this is my last chance. This is my shot. This is my dream on the line.
I feel like I haven’t slept in months, and I won’t sleep until probably next year. But I’m going to keep trying.
If you want to help me pay for this boarding tuition, my paypal is [email protected].
I also made a GoFundMe right here:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/my-full-ride-scholarship-doesn039t-cover-boarding
I take commissions, I make buttons, I will sell my paintings, anything. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
