No free man shall be seized or imprisoned… except by the lawful judgement of his equals or by the law of the land.
The Magna Carta (“Great Charter”), signed in 1215, is one of the world’s most famous documents, with a legacy of over 800 years still felt today. What started out as a peace treaty between an unpopular king and his unruly barons became a symbol of liberty, one that had influence over the American Declaration of Independence, and the United Nations’ Bill of Human Rights. While the Magna Carta is regarded as the foundation of British democracy, and the end of the absolute monarchy, the clauses contained within the document are rather mundane, and are more focused on the grievances of the barons, and the protection of their rights and those of the aristocracy. Nevertheless, by the end of the medieval era, the lower classes were regarded to be freemen, which put them under the protection of the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta has since been long interpreted as the guarantee to the rights of individuals, and the right to justice. The charter’s most enduring legacy, however, is perhaps the establishment that everyone is subject to the law, regardless of status. (x)

Rule, Britannia! and the lyrics taste of toxic ideals and a poisoned nation, and for a moment you wonder where the delusion of empire set in. Britannia, rule the waves! and the song hums of days in which blood marked glory for whoever spilt it and you can only think: how imperialistic. You don’t sing the next line, and can only sigh at the hypocrisy. (Britons never, never, never shall be slaves)

not all those who are lost w a n d e r.
sometimes they walk down cobbled streets, past the bustling throng of people who follow carefully planned routes. they trip over uneven ground and run their hands over crumbling stones and look up to the towering church spires.
sometimes they walk through silent meadows, where nature has been left in ancient solitude as intended by gods. they brush their fingers through knee-high grass and step over ant hills and watch a butterfly lazily float past.
they walk, lost, but with p u r p o s e.

there is something reassuring about a crown, about a symbol that marks a nation’s history, blood-soaked may it be.
it is the promise of a past, in a time when the future is no longer ensured. it is something to say that the country was here even when war marched on its borders and its people were scattered.
a crown is history, and history is a wonderous tale drummed into the minds of men.
